WrestleMania main event early thoughts

1st February 2023 by Scott Keith

So Scott after an eventful Royal Rumble the main event of WrestleMania appears set with Roman Reigns vs Cody Rhodes. Cody seems like a popular pick to be the man to finally dethrone Reigns. Maybe I'm overthinking it but would the guy that helped create AEW and took many shots at Triple H the last couple years be the one to finally beat Reigns?
They don’t have to.  Roman is drawing money and there’s an argument to keep the belt on him and continue doing so.

Sami vs. Cody

31st January 2023 by Scott Keith

Cody Rhodes goal in becoming WWE Champion has nothing to do with who the champion is, just so long as he wins the title.  It ultimately doesn’t matter if he’s the guy to end Roman’s reign of terror.

Sami Zayn potentially defeating Roman Reigns for the title in his hometown of Montreal has the makings of one of those pops and moments that people would remember forever.  Sami can essentially only be champion if it’s at Roman’s expense.

Where do you see Sami Zayn defending against Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania landing as even a remote possibility?  The crowd would be hot as they’re obviously both popular but there would also be way less chance of a fan backlash to a potential Cody win since Sami still would have gotten his moment.  Or Cody loses and you get another long term story with him working his way back up before finally winning the big one while Sami gets to run with the title a little longer, maybe dropping it to Rollins or back to Roman before Cody gets his next shot.

This then leaves Roman available to face someone like Rock or Austin in the top non-title match as Roman plans to destroy one of the GOATs before vowing to reclaim his title after WrestleMania.
0.00000000000000 percent chance.

Rumble questions/observations

31st January 2023 by Scott Keith

Hey Scott-

1.  I understand why Cody was in at 30- maybe ring rust I guess. But why not just make it a surprise?  The ppv numbers aren’t an issue. It would have been a ROYAL RUMBLE MOMENT. Plus having him at 30 looks weak.

2.  Not sure if they do this. But after seeing the crowds reaction to Asuka. Why not have her win? Would have been a great moment. She seemed really over and believable.

3.  Having Ripley not only win from one but also start out injured also makes her too strong ya know?  And why not have Beth come back in? Better than Nia no-vax jax. And also. A good way to get her eliminated if you wanted to go that route per previous point.

Thanks for your time.  I’ll hang up and listen.

Asuka already won it a few years ago.  It’s time to push someone new.  I have no issue with Rhea winning, but I wish the field was better and the match was more interesting.
And Cody should have lobbied for 27.  Fits his “destiny” storyline much better.

Rollins recent Punk comments?

30th January 2023 by Scott Keith

In light of Rollins recent burial of Punk which of these 3 scenarios is most likely?

A. Rollins planting the seeds for a future program with Punk.

B. Rollins being told by HHH that under no circumstances is Punk ever coming back.

C. Just Rollins being Rollins.
Oh I gotta go with C on this one.

Winged Eagle Belt?

30th January 2023 by Scott Keith

If Cody wins the WWE Championship at WrestleMania, do you think there's any chance they will temporarily bring back the winged eagle belt? It fits his character and attire perfectly, they could possibly sell a ton of replica belts, and they still have the Universal championship as the WWE logo branded belt. I don't think they would bring it back forever but this would be such an awesome thing to do. It just feels at this point that even bringing back a nostalgic design would be so new and fresh and exciting.
I’m down with it.

GUNTHER’S Royal Rumble performance

30th January 2023 by Scott Keith

Beat Rumble performance ever? And if not, it's gotta be top 2-3, right? Dude looked like he had just as much energy entering at number one as he did being in the final two while breaking the longevity record, and never seemed like he was out of the match for more than a minute or two.

Bonus question: GUNTHER has to be Codys SummerSlam title defense, right?
Gunther didn’t get the job done though.  And if you’re not first, you’re last.  That means Flair is still the man.

Still a mystery..

29th January 2023 by Scott Keith

Hey Scott,

A question for you or maybe the blog can try and solve this decades long conundrum.

Has it ever been found out who were,

1) Downtown Charlie Brown

B) The Midnight Rider

3) The Giant Machine
They were all played by Jack Victory.
Keith Richards will outlive us all
As well he should.

Surprise MVP

29th January 2023 by Scott Keith

Hello There,

Who would say was the best addition to a group/storyline, where their presence since they were added (and thus basically took over the storyline & becoming the focus) was more beneficial to saving a stale or getting stale faction: Sami Zayn with the Bloodline or Rhea Ripley (and her Dominic pairing) taking over Judgment Day?

Thank You.
The Rock taking over the Nation in 1998.

Cody, Charlotte, Brandi and the Summer of Sam(i)

28th January 2023 by Scott Keith

1. Cody Rhodes HAS to win the Royal Rumble as he's the only person left to credibly beat Roman Reigns AND have a long reign afterwards

2. Sami Zayn needs to stay a heel and if anything, become MORE evil as Roman's go-to henchman. The Lady Deathstrike to Roman Reign's Donald Pierce.

3. Ideally the Roman Reigns/Kevin Owens ends with Sami getting a DQ loss for Roman that lets him keep the belt. Then, as Sami prepares to cripple Kevin per his master's orders, Cody comes out to make the save, brutalizing Sami to an inch of his life as he tells Roman he's coming for him.

4. To increase this, we need Hunter involved as far as him directly interceding to shut down the Bloodline's BS so that the fight between Roman and Cody at Wrestlemania is a fair one.

5. Kevin vs Sami happens at Mania and Kevin finally beats Sami, as part of Wrestlemania being Bloodline's final end.

6. Post-Mania, Roman runs off to pout over losing both of his belts to Cody leaving Sami to go full villain and vowing to destroy Cody. Right down to assaulting Brandi Rhodes on the first post-Mania Raw to hammer home that Sami is irredeemably evil and will stoop to all sorts of lows to make Cody pay for destroying Sami's meal ticket via him targeting Cody's family for violence.

7. Sami quickly finds a new ally in Charlotte Flair, who seeing Sami has become the real Satan of Wrestling (a bit of a public diss at MJF, who in spite of all of his claims of being the devil is more “squire the dimness” in terms of villainy in terms of failing miserably at actually being worthy of the nickname “the Devil”) and pledging herself as his Hellfire Queen and aid him in destroying Cody. As far as evoking the Flair/Rhodes rivalry with Charlotte being jealous of Cody's success and popularity and to give Brandi someone to beat up once she reemerges from the hospital to seek vengeance on Sami for attacking her.

7. We in turn get the Summer of Sam(i), as Sami and Charlotte becomes the new arch villains of the WWE, crossing all sorts of lines with their evil as Cody and Brandi try and stop them. You can even do the “Dark Cody” angle as the feud escalates, where Cody ditches the crappy blonde hair as he realizes that he has to re-embrace his dark side to combat Sami and Charlotte's evil, in order to stop the two.

You and Fatness should do a podcast together.  It would be four hours long but glorious.

Announcers

28th January 2023 by Scott Keith

I always consider Bobby Heenan’s performance during the 92 Rumble as one of the all time best performances.  He literally adds a star to the match by himself selling the story.  What other announcer performances would you consider special like that?

Jim Ross at KOTR 98 and maybe even his call of Rock-Hogan have to be up there.

If not Slaughter then who to beat Warrior

27th January 2023 by Scott Keith

If they didn't have the whole Gulf War angle going on with Slaughter, who would have taken the title from Warrior?  Could they have put the belt on Savage and done the Career vs Title match at WM 7, or just do Warrior-Hogan 2 at 7?
Hogan was always the plan from the moment he lost the title.  That’s why they booked the LA Coliseum.

Royal Rumble Glass Ceiling

27th January 2023 by Scott Keith

Hard to believe that since Rey Mysterio won the Rumble in 2006, only once in the last 16 years has a Superstar who had never previously been a WWE World Champion won the Rumble match and then went on to win at WrestleMania.  And, unfortunately for Drew McIntyre, that one instance was in an empty warehouse – not exactly a “WrestleMania moment”.

Assuming that Cody Rhodes and Sami Zayn are the odds on favorites to win the Rumble this weekend, does history dictate that Roman’s probably walking out of WrestleMania still champion?

P.S. Does ANYBODY else have even a semi-realistic chance of winning on Saturday?  Even a snowball’s chance that HHH figures WrestleMania is already sold out and uses this as an opportunity to push someone else in a big upset?
It’s gotta be either Sami or Cody and given the rating that Sami drew on Monday you have to take a shot with him.

Who Needs a PC

27th January 2023 by Scott Keith

Is there gonna be a comment TK regrets more than bashing the WWE PC? Forget that it's a state of the art facility for performers to train or rehab or get rid of some ring rust. But how could anyone make fun of having a facility that trains the next crop of potential superstars? Now their call up history was rough for a few years due to Vince being Vince, but if anything thats helped TK more than anyone since he has picked up alot of performers who spent good chunks of time at the PC and are way better for it.

And what makes the comments worse is WWE may have broken the code on developing some can't miss performers, especially tapping in college athletes. To watch someone like Sol Ruca or Tiffany Stratton move so smoothly in the ring with the limited amount of matches they've had is unreal. Compared that to Jade who has all the personality but struggles in a 7 to 8 min match and hasn't shown really any growth in the ring, its night and day. All the time money and time Tony has wasted on ROH or a video game that is going on year 3 of production would of been better spent on training his workers.

Bianca is pretty much the blueprint and it seems to be working. You got Tony D, Bron, the Creeds, and slew of others coming down the pipeline, the future looks extremely bright. Even Lash Legend has improved dramatically compared to Jade at this point. Nothing I have seen from QTs school has really done anything to be excited about. Even Hook has only shown glimpses but hasn't been pushed to show if he can really pull off a good 10 to 15 mins. Should Tony invest more into training and development?
No, because when Vince gets back and cuts everyone Tony will have his pick of your favourites again.

Bash at the Beach

26th January 2023 by Scott Keith
Hi Scott,
Hindsight being 20/20 and all, what if the Hogan vs. Sting feud had culminated in a match at Bash at the Beach 1997, rather than Starrcade?
By moving up the match by 6 months, you avoid the Luger title change in the summer. You hopefully have a more motivated Sting who, just a few months prior, had made his allegiances clear when he attacked the NWO in dramatic fashion to close the
Uncensored PPV. Lastly, the case could be made that Bash at the Beach was a more important event for WCW than Starrcade by that point (i.e. Hogan vs. Flair in ‘94) and it would have also marked 1 year since the Hogan turn
and formation of the NWO. Thoughts?
That was the original direction but they delayed it for six months for various reasons.  But yes, it was absolutely going to be sooner and it would have been a far better idea that way.  They could have even popped a rematch buyrate at Starrcade.

Zayn in the Rumble

26th January 2023 by Scott Keith
I'm with you that with the storylines, Zayn would be the best payoff to dethrone Reigns. But as you pointed out, it's probably going to be Zayn/Owens vs. Usos & Rhodes vs. reigns at Mania, which works too, but just not as good if it were Zayn.

Having said that, would it be best for them to keep Zayn out of the Rumble itself?  I'm not expecting a 14-15 DB level hijacking here, but with the crown being invested with his journey for this long, is there the possibility that once Zayn gets eliminated, the crowd could turn on a Rhodes win because not only has he been absent for a while, but he also is the company fed obvious choice, like Batista & reigns were those years?

Put the heat on Reigns.  Have Sami come in at #1 or 2 and soon into the run, Roman or Heyman comes down and demands that he prove his loyalty by eliminating himself, and then when he refuses, Roman does it himself.

The Ultimate Bryan Danielson Dream Match of Ultimate Destiny

26th January 2023 by Scott Keith
Given his current run of “let me put on a classic for free on TV each week to set up a 60-minute Ironman match” who would be the one top worker from a previous era you’d pick if you could get Danielson vs anyone in their prime:

Obvious choices: Mid 90s Bret, post back injury Shawn, early 2000s Kurt Angle?

Less obvious choices: mid 80s Flair or Steamboat, mid 90s Owen, mid 80s Perfect

Left field choices: modern day Okada, late 90s AJPW pillar (Misawa/Kobashi/Kawada)

Someone else I’ve missed?

Who ya got?

I'd be really interested to see Danielson against prime era Bret Hart.  I think they would know exactly how to structure that one into a classic

WrestleMania II

25th January 2023 by Scott Keith

I know you probably answered this, but with Piper turning face after WM 2 and leaving for Hollywood after 3, do you think he’d have done the clean job to Hogan in the main event, maybe cage match/escape finish to save pinfall, if he’s been champ going in. He beats Hogan for title somewhere in winter of 85/86, loses it at WM?

Or was Piper so anti-jobbing by any method? Hogan/Piper not having a one on one at WM is as big a miss as not doing Hogan/Flair at 8

Piper doing a job for Hogan would have killed his heat in his mind, and Hogan jobbing at that point would have been stupid.  Better to put Bundy in there and lose with no baggage.

Briscoe Brothers

25th January 2023 by Scott Keith

I never watched ROH, so I have never actually watched a Briscoes match. But I went down the rabbit hole of watching their promos on youtube the last few days, and good lord, their promos are gold, these guys had an absolutely amazing act. (My favorite is “Briscoe brothers shoot on ROH tag title tournament”)

I know you rate their matches high, but have you ever watched their promo videos? I also think Uncle Jethro is hilarious too, and wondering if he was so named as an homage to your “Dang Jethro!” Or maybe there are just lots of guys named Jethro?

I feel bad that I'm so late to appreciate them, and obviously feel terrible for the family and their loss and what the girls are going through.

RIP Jay

I remain as committed as ever to getting Dang Jethro over as the catchphrase for the 2020s but I don’t think there’s any connection.
But yeah, the Briscoes were great and they should have been part of AEW from jump street.  Their promos would have been a piece of the puzzle that the promotion was lacking.
