What the World Was Watching: WWF Prime Time Wrestling – February 18, 1991

A corny voiceover puts over Stamford, Connecticut as a big media center relative to other places like Los Angeles and New York City.  Vince McMahon and Bobby Heenan argue backstage about getting ready and are introduced as the night’s hosts by Lord Alfred Hayes.  There is a live audience, a mix of parents and young children.  Heenan said years later that most of the audience were WWF employees.

After McMahon tells Heenan his fly is open, a replay of the tag team battle royal on Superstars airs.

What the World Was Watching: WWF Wrestling Challenge – February 3, 1991

Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan are doing commentary and they are doing the second episode from Chattanooga, Tennessee.  Heenan says that Hulk Hogan is only the number one contender for the WWF Championship because he put pressure on WWF President Jack Tunney.

The Orient Express are shown hitting each other in the locker room as Mr. Fuji encourages them to keep going.  WWF Tag Team Champions the Hart Foundation get themselves hyped up for today’s title defense.

What the World Was Watching: The Main Event V – February 1, 1991

Pictures of Hulk Hogan doing a USO visit are shown while “Stars & Stripes Forever” plays in the background.

Vince McMahon and Roddy Piper are in the booth and are taped from Macon, Georgia.  The broadcast drew a 6.7 rating (10.6 million viewers), a drop from the 8.6 rating and 15 million viewers the fourth Main Event telecast drew in November 1990.  It was the worst rated NBC special for the WWF to this point and would be the last Main Event show.

What the World Was Watching: Royal Rumble 1991

Gorilla Monsoon and Roddy Piper are in charge of commentary, broadcasting live from Miami, Florida.  According to profightdb.com, the show drew a crowd of 16,000.  On pay-per-view the show drew a buyrate of 2.4, the equivalent of 440,000 buys.  This was an increase over the previous year’s show, which drew a 2.0 buyrate (260,000 buys).

Since the Gulf War had commenced days earlier, the WWF plays the national anthem for the crowd.  Piper is also amped up, wearing a yellow ribbon around his arm for the troops watching the show from the Middle East.

Vince McMahon, Roddy Piper, and the Honky Tonk Man are in the booth, wrapping up a long taping in Tampa, Florida.  This show aired the day of The Royal Rumble and would be Honky Tonk Man’s last appearance on WWF television until 1997.

Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan host tonight’s program.  Before the matches begin, Monsoon tells Heenan that he will not be able to get the Barbarian to stop the Big Bossman this weekend at The Royal Rumble.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan’s squash from Superstars on January 5 is the first match of the evening.
