What the World Was Watching: WWF Prime Time Wrestling – April 16, 1991

Rants

Vince McMahon and Bobby Heenan are in the studio, starting the show by recapping Heenan wearing a kilt on last week’s episode and being mocked by Roddy Piper.

Tugboat’s squash from Wrestling Challenge is shown.

Gene Okerlund’s update segment discusses the emerging feud between Jake Roberts and Earthquake.

The Bushwhackers return to do another weather segment like the pilot episode. It is full of juvenile humor, highlighted by them pointing to feces on a map of Iraq and saying that it is a “troop movement.”

Colonel Mustafa (w/General Adnan) (3-0) beats Jim Powers via submission to the Camel Clutch at 3:16:

Powers dominates most of the match, which is surprising since has been lucky to get in much offense in his other television appearances this year. He misses a dropkick and that proves to be his undoing. It is sad seeing the old Iron Sheik trying to work these matches since he had nothing left in the tank.

One Bushwhackers segment is not enough as they are still around when the show returns to the studio. They make nonsensical Iraq jokes.

Irwin R. Schyster comes onto the set. Heenan looks nervous as Schyster talks about going after the tax cheats in the WWF.

Jimmy Snuka’s squash from Wrestling Challenge is shown.

Schyster goes through Heenan’s latest tax return. He reveals that last year Heenan reported $500,000 in income but only paid $242 in taxes because of itemized business expenses. Schyster argues that Heenan probably overpaid is due a refund. He reminds fans that they need to pay their taxes and he is going to audit the Bushwhackers.

Koko B. Ware (1-5) pins Louie Spicolli after the Ghostbuster at 4:58:

Today must be the day where jobbers get their time to shine as Spicolli takes the fight to Ware and dominates him. Ware’s poor performance must be due to him losing five straight singles matches. Sadly, Spicolli was not proficient enough in the ring yet to make his time on offense interesting. Spicolli puts his head down too early on an Irish whip and that lets Ware hit the Ghostbuster to win his first match since January.

A replay of the Funeral Parlor segment from Superstars where the Undertaker and Paul Bearer locked the Ultimate Warrior in a casket airs.

The Legion of Doom (8-0) defeat Haku & the Barbarian (2-1) when Animal pins Haku after a double clothesline at 8:50 shown:

This match took place at the recent Superstars taping in Las Vegas, Nevada. The heels take the fight to the Legion of Doom and hold their own. Hawk is placed in peril after missing a flying clothesline, with Animal breaking up a pinfall effort after Haku and the Barbarian use their inverted atomic drop-Mafia kick finisher. Animal eventually gets the hot tag and nearly pins Haku with a powerslam. Haku aims to give Animal a thrust kick but Hawk frees his partner, the Barbarian takes the blow, and the Legion floor Haku with a double clothesline to escape with a win. This was the first time in their WWF run that the Legion of Doom showed vulnerability and it made for their best match to date. Rating: **½

Elizabeth walks into the studio. McMahon narrates her career highlights. Elizabeth says that she has always loved Randy Savage through good times and bad.

The Texas Tornado (12-0) pins Barry O with the discus punch at 3:46:

Barry O does better than the Tornado’s recent opponents, working the arm after the Tornado goes shoulder-first into the ring post. However, the Tornado’s strength helps him power back and he springs off the ropes with the discus punch to win another match.

Irwin R. Schyster returns with a massive book that he claims are the Bushwhackers taxes that include unlawful deductions for different types of sardines.

The Mountie’s squash from Wrestling Challenge is shown.

The Bushwhackers confront Schyster with a wheelbarrow full of sardines. As Butch distracts Schyster, Luke puts some of the sardines in his briefcase.

Greg Valentine (5-2-1) defeats the Genius (0-1) via submission to the figure-four leg lock at 4:32:

This match took place at the recent Wrestling Challenge taping in Reno, Nevada. The Genius gets some laughs after skipping around the ring to sell an Indian deathlock. A weird spot in the match is how the Genius goes toe-to-toe with Valentine with his strikes, which serves to weaken Valentine because a big part of his gimmick is that he is a heavy hitter. Eventually, Valentine knocks the Genius down, drops an elbow, and secures the figure-four to win. Rating: ¾*

Schyster tells the fans that there are a lot of dues that are owed to him and he is going to go through the WWF to collect them.

Heenan says he has a date later tonight with Elizabeth. He quickly begs off when an irate Randy Savage busts into the studio. Savage warns Heenan that he has entered “the danger zone” and dumps a bucket on his head.

Tune in next week to see Mr. Perfect, Tugboat, and Brutus Beefcake!

The Last Word: The Prime Time episodes after WrestleMania have failed to entertain because of weak studio guests. On this show Irwin R. Schyster got way too much screen time and the Bushwhackers comedy did not land. Randy Savage’s segment at the end at least provided a fun end to the telecast. The one bright spot of the show was the Legion of Doom-Haku & Barbarian match, which was good because it broke the Legion of their usual formula.
