Back with some more 1993 WCW, as we take a look at Beach Blast 1993. As far as I’m aware; Beach Blast marks the only major North American wrestling event that was built around someone trying to blow someone else up with a boat explosion. I think Gene Kiniski once tried to rig up Lou Thesz’s penny farthing so that it’d explode if it went below 2mph, but I’m not sure if that was ever officially confirmed.

As mentioned last week; we’re taking a little bit of a break from 1994 WCW for a few weeks, but we’ll get there again eventually. In the meantime, we’ll wallow in the hodgepodge that was World Championship Wrestling in 1993, by taking a look at Clash of the Champions #23.

Clash #23 does at least have an intriguing Main Event, as well as featuring arguably the biggest match of 2 Cold Scorpio’s US career. Seeing as I’m a big fan of Ol’ Scorp, I’m looking forward to that particular bout especially.

We’re going to take a bit of a break from 1994 WCW pay per views as I’ve already reviewed the July 1994 offerings from them so we’ll drop back in to that period with Fall Brawl 94 in the autumn, and if I get a chance I’ll take a look at some of the Clash shows from 1994 as well. In the meantime; we’ll drop back a year to look at some shows from 1993, starting with Slamboree.

1993 is usually seen as a bit of a dark period for WCW, with the summer and autumn months in particular being considered particularly drab. The company was between era’s, as Bill Watts had finally been mercifully punted and Hulk Hogan was yet to come in.

Slamboree began as an event to honour legends of wrestling’s past, with the show featuring a Hall of Fame ceremony along with some matches featuring the legends. On top of all of the legends stuff, we’ve got Vader taking on Davey Boy Smith and a very special Flair For The Gold segment.

Happy Wednesday (moving into Thursday) Everyone!

Back to rebooking today, as I’ve been enjoying Scott Keith’s WCW 2000 reviews and we’ve hit the stage this week where Eric Bischoff and Vince Russo are about to be brought back in for the Big Reset of the promotion.

However, I thought I’d throw together what a possible card would have looked like if WCW hadn’t done the dreaded reset, with Spring Stampede 2000 being the next pay per view on the docket.

So, join me if you dare, for the rebooking of Spring Stampede 2000 in a world where the gruesome twosome weren’t allowed to perform their reset.

I’ve decided to do some more 1994 WCW shows, as they’re generally decent, and that brings us to Slamboree. Slamboree was initially a show where WCW would honour legends of the past and bring them in for some matches.

We’ve got the Hall of Fame on this show, along with Tully Blanchard making a brief return to the company for a match with Terry Funk.

I seem to remember Slamboree 94 being a decent show, so let’s see if that recollection is accurate. You can find the card for the event at the link below;

Following on from my review of SuperBrawl IV earlier this year, I thought I’d take a look at WCW’s next Pay Per View event that year in the form of Spring Stampede 1994!

The big match for Spring Stampede 1994 will see Ric Flair defending the WCW Title against longtime friend and rival Ricky Steamboat. Elsewhere we’ve got Cactus Jack and Maxx Payne challenging The Nasty Boys for the WCW Tag Titles, and Great Muta has come over from Japan to challenge for the US Title.

Happy Saturday You Greedy Gannets!

Seeing as we covered the last episode of Thunder a couple of weeks ago, I decided to take a look at WCW’s very last pay per view as well, just to close the book on that particular era of the company and also because I remember it having some good matches. The reason they decided to call the show “Greed” was because they were doing some kind of Seven Sins thing at the time, with Greed fitting into that theme quite nicely. Sadly the company didn’t stick around long enough for us to get WCW Sloth, although the Main Event for that one would have surely had to be Lex Luger Vs Kevin Nash!

I decided to let Cage Match decide the review this week, as this episode of Thunder is apparently the highest rated one on the site amongst the inmates. I’m not sure if that’s just because of the historical significance of it or because it genuinely is a great episode (Thunder was usually quite awful, so that’s not an especially high bar to clear). Let’s go back to reviewing wrestling, as no one cared about the other stuff I was doing. This week we’ve got WCW Worldwide from May 1997, featuring the likes of The Disco Inferno, Craig Pittman and Super Calo!

Happy SuperBrawl Saturday Everyone! (I hope your t-shirts aren’t too tight!)

I decided to review SuperBrawl IV this week as I’ve been meaning to watch the show again for a while because I was interested in seeing how I’d feel about the Main Event between Vader and Ric Flair. I love their battle at Starrcade 1993, but I seem to recall that the SuperBrawl IV match they have is a bit disappointing, so I thought I’d give it another watch this week.

Elsewhere on the card we’ve got a divisive match between Steve Regal and Arn Anderson, as well as Cactus Jack and Maxx Payne challenging The Nasty Boys for the Tag Titles. We’ve also got some matches that look pretty cack in all honesty (featuring exciting grapplers such as The Equaliser and a totally past it Jimmy Garvin) but hopefully the good on the show will outweigh the bad.

SuperBrawl IV actually never saw an official home release for some reason, but thankfully it’s up on WWE Network/Peacock and I also have a bootleg copy on VHS somewhere that I got from Extreme Central UK in Manchester, which sadly closed its doors many moons ago.

We’re going to finish our journey into 1998 WCW today by reviewing Starrcade 1998. By reviewing this I think I have now officially reviewed every pay per view WCW had in 1998. Some of them were good (Souled Out, Great American Bash), some of them were okay (Spring Stampede, Halloween Havoc) and some were absolutely dog awful (Road Wild, World War 3)

Let’s see what category Starrcade 1998 falls into.

And no, I probably won’t be doing this with 1999, because most of WCW’s 1999 offerings were pretty plop, although SuperBrawl IX is so offensively wretched that it might make a good Stinker Review subject.

I’ve decided to keep my journey through 1998 WCW going by reviewing Halloween Havoc 1998. I’ve thankfully suffered through the horror that is World War 3 98 already, so we’ll skip that in November and then close out the year in December with Starrcade 98. Halloween Havoc 1998 is a mixed bag of a show, with it mostly being remembered for three things;

1 – The fact that WCW didn’t notify the pay per view companies that the show was going to run longer than 3 hours, meaning that a lot of providers cut the feed and a lot of angry fans ended up getting refunds whilst WCW had to placate them by putting the Main Event up for free on Nitro, which then annoyed fans who had bought the show and had had no problems because the match they ostensibly were most interested in paying to see was now getting thrown on free TV, thus kind of making their purchase redundant. This in-turn angered the pay per view companies as well, because it hurt the potential replay sales, meaning that WCW managed to anger absolutely everyone in the space of a 24 hour period!

2 – Hollywood Hogan and Warrior having a famously awful match

3 – Goldberg and DDP tearing the house down in the Main Event to essentially save the show

However, is there more to the undercard of Halloween Havoc 1998 to make it stand out from those three talking points? Let’s watch the show and find out!

We’ve got some Bill Watts Era WCW for you all today with Beach Blast 1992. Bill Watts’ stint running WCW is controversial due to him banning moves off the top rope and forcing the wrestlers to fight outside the ring with no mats to fall on, as well as an absolute gutting of the company’s production values.

However, as Beach Blast 1992 shows, WCW could still put on some fun matches during this time period, even if Watts seemed intent on kneecapping some of the more exciting wrestlers in order to push the kind of wrestling that he personally preferred.

This show has Rick Rude against Ricky Steamboat and Cactus Jack against Sting, so we’ve got two matches that are almost certain to be good before we even start. Let’s see how the rest of Beach Blast 1992 holds up.

We’ve got another review of Thunder for you this week, as we take a look at Thunder #12. The reason I picked this episode was that it was apparently the most successful Thunder ever when it came to television ratings, with it drawing a 4.4 overall. Just imagine if a wrestling show got a rating that high today? It’d be front page news!

I think the big reason Thunder #12 drew such a good TV rating was because it had Hollywood Hogan in the Main Event, which I don’t think happened a lot around this time as Hogan was more a Nitro and pay per view guy, so him rocking up to work on a Thunder was actually kind of a big deal. Some of the undercard matches look like they might be fun as well, but that depends on how much time they get and how into the show the crowd are.
