Mike Reviews WCW Thunder #51

By Michael Fitzgerald on 28th June 2023

Happy Wednesday Everyone!

I decided to review this episode of Thunder from February 1999 as the Main Event intrigued me and apparently Juventud Guerrera has a ***+ match on the undercard according to Big Davey Meltz, which isn’t bad for an episode of Thunder.

Mike Reviews WCW Great American Bash 1998

By Michael Fitzgerald on 10th June 2023

Happy Saturday Everyone!

We continue on with reviewing WCW pay per views from 1998, with it being time for Great American Bash 1998 this month. I’ve already reviewed Bash at the Beach and Road Wild (thank goodness) from 1998 so we’ll re-join this thread in September for *shudder* Fall Brawl.

The big storyline coming into Great American Bash 1998 is that Roddy Piper and Randy Savage have formed the World’s Craziest Tag Team in an effort to combat Hollywood Hogan and Bret Hart. However, their relationship is tenuous at best and regardless of the result of their tag match they will wrestle each other straight after.

Mike Reviews WCW Slamboree 1998

By Michael Fitzgerald on 20th May 2023

Happy Saturday Everyone!

I’ll keep reviewing 1998 WCW pay per views I think with Slamboree 1998 this month. I must admit that this particular era of WCW is very much my Pro Wrestling junk food. Thunder especially from this timeframe is a good thing to have on in the background when you’re doing things because it’s presented at a more relaxed pace and you usually get a couple of good wrestling matches.

The big angles for Slamboree 1998 were that the nWo was splitting into two factions, with Hollywood Hogan’s faction wearing Black and White whilst Kevin Nash’s faction wore Black and Red. Hogan’s side has beefed up the numbers by recruiting The Giant (which would have been roughly his 77th career turn by that stage I think), which has added some layers of intrigue to the Main Event as Giant will be tagging with WCW representative Sting against Kevin Nash and Scott Hall.

Elsewhere on the card we’ve got Eric Bischoff against Vince McMahon. Well, not really, but we’ll get to that. Also Bret Hart has his first pay per view match for WCW since a misguided Heel turn as he takes on Randy Savage.

Mike Reviews WCW Spring Stampede 1998

By Michael Fitzgerald on 1st April 2023

Happy Stampeding Saturday Everyone!

We continue our journey into 1998 WCW today by taking a looking at Spring Stampede 1998. This is a show I’ve actually watched quite a bit because I had it on bootleg VHS back in the day when it was very difficult to get official WCW releases over here in the UK. From memory it’s not a great show but it’s got enough decent stuff on it as to make it worthwhile.

I actually managed to find the VHS version of the show, so I’m watching that for this. The bonus is that I get the original music without the Peacock/Network dubbing, but the negative is that the video quality is pretty rubbish

Mike Rebooks WCW Starrcade 1993

By Michael Fitzgerald on 15th March 2023

Happy Wednesday Everyone!

Last week I rebooked WrestleMania VIII on the assumption that the owner of the promotion mandated a certain Main Event, thus ensuring I would be forced to mix up the card a bit. This week we’ll do the same with WCW Starrcade 1993.

In this universe, we’re going to assume that the scissor incident between Sid and Arn Anderson didn’t take place, thus meaning I’ll be expected to close the show with the previously planned Main Event of Vader Vs Sid.

Let’s see if I can be amendable to the WCW hierarchy whilst still putting on a fun Starrcade 1993.

Mike Reviews WCW Uncensored 1998

By Michael Fitzgerald on 4th March 2023

Happy Saturday Everyone!

Uncensored 1998 has a couple of good matches on it, and also some sucky ones, but I’m hoping the positives will outweigh the negatives and this will end up being a decent show overall. Fingers crossed eh?

The big storyline coming in was dissension within the nWo, as Hollywood Hogan and Randy Savage have fallen out and now the group is splintering as guys pick sides. Sting is also defending the WCW Title against Scott Hall, whilst Kevin Nash will wrestle The Giant in a rematch from Souled Out 1998.

I’ll be watching the opener on WWE Network/Peacock and then I’ll be switching over to the official Pal VHS release from then on, so if there are any inconsistencies then that’s why. Sadly the tracking is all messed up for the opener on the VHS but it clears up when the second match kicks in. I need some Self High Five in my life though, as well as Jericho’s Evenflow knock-off theme, so VHS it is.

Mike Reviews WCW SuperBrawl VIII

By Michael Fitzgerald on 11th February 2023

Happy Saturday Everyone!

We’ve got a bit of a hit and miss WCW pay per view this week, as some of the stuff on SuperBrawl VIII is very good and some of it is less so. WCW was coming off a very bad Starrcade and a much better Souled Out here, with the Main Event being a rematch of the awful Starrcade Main Event between Hollywood Hogan and Sting. We’ve also got The Outsiders Vs The Steiner’s and Diamond Dallas Page taking on Chris Benoit.

Mike Reviews WCW SuperBrawl VI

By Michael Fitzgerald on 14th January 2023

Happy SuperBrawl Saturday Everyone! I hope all of your collective shirts are too tight on this momentous day!

This week we return to a WCW show I’ve been intending to watch properly for a while now in the form of SuperBrawl VI. It’s probably best known for the Kevin Sullivan Vs Brian Pillman match, but there’s also Ric Flair taking on Randy Savage and that has to be good right?

Mike Reviews WCW Starrcade 1993

By Michael Fitzgerald on 17th December 2022

Happy Saturday Everyone!

We continue the trend of one match shows this week with WCW Starrcade 1993, as Ric Flair Vs Vader is amazing and the rest of the card is…less so. However, hopefully there’s SOMETHING on the undercard that makes it worthwhile (I think there is to be fair).

Mike Reviews WCW World War 3 1995

By Michael Fitzgerald on 19th November 2022

Happy Saturday Everyone!

I felt like watching a couple of matches on this one because I’ve never seen them before, hence the review. The Main Event is an atrocious 3 ring 60 man battle royal, with the winner becoming the WCW Champion.

However, on the under card we’ve got Ric Flair Vs Sting (And even WCW surely couldn’t ruin that one once it gets in the ring) and a match that should excite the Joshi Boyz here on the Blog with Bull Nakano and Akira Hokuto teaming up.

So that’s at least two matches which should be good, which I’ll take, with anything on top of that being a nice bonus. WCW had already started Nitro by this point, but they wouldn’t start clobbering Raw until the Summer of 1996, so the battle was still relatively even at this stage.

Mike Reviews WCW Bash at the Beach 1998

By Michael Fitzgerald on 20th August 2022

Happy Saturday Everyone!

I’ve been meaning to give this show a full watch for a while now as it’s got some interesting matches on it and this event was always a big staple of WCW’s summer pay per view offerings, so let’s give it a watch.

The big storyline coming in was Goldberg had just won the WCW Title six days before this event by defeating Hollywood Hogan on Nitro, with DDP and Karl Malone helping out, so now Hogan is looking for revenge on those two with the assistance of Dennis Rodman.

The Malone/Rodman involvement got WCW a lot of publicity as the two were on opposite ends of the NBA Finals that year, and the buy rate for this event ended up being way higher than usual for a big WCW show, so it ended up being a success even if the match perhaps didn’t deliver.

But we’ll get there.

Mike Reviews – WCW Thunder #99 (9th February 2000)

By Michael Fitzgerald on 13th July 2022

Happy Wednesday Everyone!

I did an episode of Thunder last week and realised that the following weeks show was uploaded to a certain video streaming website, which meant it would have the real music and what have you seeing as it was the original airing from 2000 as opposed to the edited and dubbed one on the WWE Network, so I decided to give it a watch as some of the matches sounded interesting.

Let’s see if those matches are indeed interesting or if this show is an utter disaster like Thunder usually was during this timeframe.

Mike Reviews – WCW Bash at the Beach 2000

By Michael Fitzgerald on 9th July 2022

Happy Saturday Everyone!

It’s been 22 years to the day since this infamous event took place, so I decided to set the way back machine to the summer of 2000 and give it a review. The big storylines coming into this one were a newly Heel turned Goldberg taking on Kevin Nash for Scott Hall’s contract, whilst Jeff Jarrett defended the World Title against Hollywood Hogan.

The latter match ended up being quite newsworthy…

Mike Reviews – WCW Thunder #98 (DDP Vs The Machine episode)

By Michael Fitzgerald on 6th July 2022

Happy Wednesday Everyone!

I’ve never actually watched this episode of Thunder before but I was reminded of it by recently listening to the audiobook version of The Death of WCW. Modern WWE sometimes reminds me a lot of this era of WCW, so I thought I’d set the way back machine to 2000 in order to watch this episode.

WCW was flatter than a pancake at the time as they were between Vince Russo stints and were mostly focusing on the New World Order of Jeff Jarrett, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, Scott Steiner and The Harris Brothers taking on Sid Vicious atop the card, whilst the undercard was filled with a lot of feuds and storylines that weren’t over.

Mike Reviews – WCW Great American Bash 1996

By Michael Fitzgerald on 11th June 2022

Happy Saturday Everyone!

Seeing as I reviewed an ECW show from June 1996 last week and I haven’t reviewed this GAB show before, I decided to review it this week as it’s a show I generally enjoy and I’m interested to see if it still holds up.

It’s also quite an historically significant one as well, as not only do The Horsemen get a new member but Kevin Nash and Scott Hall show up to set the table for Bash at the Beach and the forming of the nWo the following month.

Plus, we’ve got Benoit/Sullivan and Malenko/Mysterio to enjoy as well!

Mike Reviews – WCW Slamboree 1999

By Michael Fitzgerald on 21st May 2022

Happy Saturday Everyone!

I decided to review this show because I remember there being a couple of fun matches on it and there’s the usual WCW ineptitude from this Era that I can poke fun at now and then. This was the show probably most known for the shade thrown at it by Scott Keith when he asked “What if they had a pay per view and nobody cared?”

Scott actually busted out the old Hot Poker system for this show, although I’ve never really felt it was a show deserving of being in that category, especially when you think some of the really putrid shows WCW would put on during this period.

WCW itself was a pretty lousy product at the time from a storyline perspective, with Ric Flair in the role of WCW President and doing wacky things like ending up in an asylum because he thought he was actually the President of the United States. The New World Order angle had all but fizzled out, whilst Diamond Dallas Page was on top of the promotion as World Champ.

Thankfully there was still some good wrestling on the under card in order to help keep the shows bearable, but overall WCW was a DISTANT second to the WWF in the Spring of 99, with the WWF only kicking on to further success whilst WCW started to implode as a result of around 18 months of ridiculous mismanagement.

Around this period was when the chickens started coming home to roost from a ratings, buy rates and ticket sales perspective. 1998 had still been a successful year from a purely commercial perspective, but things started falling around this time period and they fell HARD!

Mike Reviews – WCW Clash of the Champions XI – “Coastal Crush”

By Michael Fitzgerald on 9th April 2022

Happy Coastal Saturday Everyone!

I decided to review this one as I’ve always heard how bad the Ric Flair Vs JYD match is and I wanted to see if it could live up to the hype. According to WWE Network I have watched this show before at some point, but I have no memory of doing so, which bodes well for the show itself I guess!

Mike Reviews – NWA Clash of the Champions VI – “Ragin’ Cajun”

By Michael Fitzgerald on 2nd April 2022

Happy Ragin’ Saturday Everyone!

This show was a bit of a bomb back in the day when it came to attendance figures, but the Main Event is one of my favourite matches of all-time so I decided to boot it up on the WWE Network to see how the rest of the show holds up.

Mike Reviews – WCW Uncensored 1999 (14th March 1999)

By Michael Fitzgerald on 12th March 2022

Happy Uncensored Saturday Everyone!

This was the first WCW tape I ever owned, as I got it as a Christmas present in 1999. I remember reading a lot about it at the time in the wrestling mags though, as it was the first time in a while we actually got a proper release of a WCW pay per view on a commercial tape over here in the UK.

The Main Event on this one is Ric Flair Vs Hollywood Hogan in a cage. If Flair wins then he gets to become WCW president for life. If Hogan wins then Flair’s career is done. I’m watching the Warner Home Video version of this, which means I don’t have to bother with dubbed music, although the general picture and sound quality isn’t on par with the version on Peacock/WWE Network.

Mike Reviews – WCW SuperBrawl REVENGE (18th February 2001)

By Michael Fitzgerald on 5th February 2022

Happy Saturday Everyone!

I decided to have a look at the dying days of WCW today, mainly because I remember this one having some good matches on it and a zany WWF Attitude Era styled Main Event involving Kevin Nash, so that should provide some comedy appeal if nothing else.

WCW had normally given SuperBrawl the old Roman numeral treatment, but they decided to give it the “Revenge” subtitle in 2001. I think they were kind of planning on doing a seven deadly sins themed thing for the pay per views that year, so it could have been that “Revenge” was used in place of “Wrath”. The March pay per view ended up being called “Greed”, although the company unfortunately went out of business before we could get “WCW Sloth, live on pay per view!”
