The SmarK Rant for Mid-South Wrestling – 08.07.82
Taped from Shreveport, LA
Your hosts are Boyd Pierce & Cowboy Bill Watts. Bill discusses the ongoing boycott of the TV show by Junkyard Dog, who is refusing to appear on TV unless he’s booked in a title match against Ted Dibiase.
Ted Dibiase v. Tommy Saxon
Dibiase takes Saxon down and slams him a few times while Watts talks about how JYD can go pretty much anywhere he wants, including working MSG with promoter Vince McMahon, but he loves Mid-South and wants to stay here. Dibiase puts the jobber down with a back elbow and drops an elbow on him while Watts puts over the referee, who appearently just opened a Zippy’s Car Wash in Nashville, Arkansas. I wouldn’t trust a referee to wash my car. Probably be all distracted and looking the other way at someone in the street instead of doing his job. Dibiase finishes with the figure-four at 3:35.
Buck Robley v. Billy “The Star Child” Starr
Robley works the arm on Starr, but Starr tries a comeback, so Buck takes him down with a headlock. UPDATE: The Junkyard Dog has still not arrived for his scheduled TV match this week. Robley gets some slams and goes to a chinlock, then pounds away on Starr and drops him on the top rope for two. Neckbreaker gets two. Kneedrop gets two. And the sleeper finishes 4:34. This was a really boring squash. These guys are both so wacky you’d think they’d mesh better, but nope.
Hacksaw Duggan v. Tony Torres
Duggan works a headlock to start and puts the boots to him while Watts talks about Duggan’s experiences in football as part of the suicide squad. I heard that was the original title of The Iron Claw but DC beat them to it. Duggan with a shoulderbreaker for two and he goes to a facelock while Watts notes that Dibiase is willing to negotiate a title match against JYD, but only in exchange for Dog & Olympia defending the Mid-South tag team titles against himself and Duggan. That seems fair. Duggan with a spear and then he slams the guy into the turnbuckles and finishes with an Oklahoma Stampede at 3:10.
Last week, Iron Mike Sharpe is facing the One Man Gang and nearly gets piledriven, but he backdrops the Gang to escape and then hauls Skandor Akbar into the ring and piledrives HIM instead.
Louisiana title: Killer Khan v. Iron Mike Sharpe
Wait, what? This was already on the 7/31 episode. I think someone at the WWE Network messed up because the main event was supposed to be something with Dog & Olympia against Killer Khan & One Man Gang. So yeah, JYD has the title won, but Akbar interferes to save and ends up getting another piledriver from Sharpe.
Mr. Olympia & Precious Paul Ellering v. Killer Khan & One Man Gang
OK now we’re back to the proper show again, and Ellering is subbing for JYD but the tag titles aren’t on the line. The babyfaces double-team Khan and Ellering runs wild before dropkicking Khan into the ropes, but Khan brings the Gang in and it’s BREAKING LOOSE IN TULSA. So Gang slams Ellering and drops an elbow on him, allowing Khan to hit the diving kneedrop for the pin at 3:37. So add Gang & Killer Khan to the list of tag team contenders.
And that’s apparently the whole show as this one cuts off at 32 minutes instead of the usual 45. Next week we apparently get to see JYD v. Nick Bockwinkel from the Houston Coliseum. Anyway, I dunno what was up with this episode because it was weirdly edited and apparently 10 minutes were chopped out for some reason.
