The SmarK Rant for GWF Supercard – 07.23.91
Taped from the Globaldome in Dallas, TX
Your hosts are Craig Johnson & Scott Hudson
And now it’s the start of the LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT tournament. There’s some names you’ll probably know in this one.
The Cartel joins Joe to start, and Makhan Singh still won’t announce who the Boss is. Also Makhan and Rip Rogers have a mysterious THIRD MAN they’re going to announce soon. And Rip tries to sell a car to Pedicino. Should have claimed to be a Nigerian prince.
Light heavyweight tournament round one: Chaz v. Ed Robinson
Chaz, the son of journeyman Tug Taylor, dropkicks Robinson out of the ring, but Ed comes back in and beats on him with forearms. Chaz with a bodyblock for two and he goes to work on the arm, but Robinson makes the ropes. Robinson gets a sleeper, but Chaz does the big two arm drop comeback and reverses to his own. Robinson runs him into the corner and chokes him out on the ropes. They head to the floor and Chaz cuts off a dive with a shot to the gut, but Robinson clotheslines him in the ring for two. Chaz bulldogs him and follows with a backdrop that nearly goes horribly wrong. Chaz looks completely gassed out there and they go home quickly as Chaz finishes with a flying kick off the top at 6:15 to advance. Decent but Chaz did not look ready for prime time. *1/2
Light heavyweight tournament round one: The Lightning Kid v. Bubba Fangman
Baby Waltman, complete with short hair and a lightning bolt shaved into the side of his head, charges and gets sent to the floor by Bubba. Kid is playing an arrogant heel at this point, which really doesn’t suit him at this point. Kid takes time to do some cartwheels on the floor and heads back in for a totally sincere handshake offer before taking him down with a facelock and choking him out behind the ref’s back. Kid with a flying clothesline and he follows with the kicks in the corner and a running dropkick. Fangman fights back with a clothesline for two, but Kid goes to a submission hold to stretch him. Bubba escapes with a backdrop and makes a comeback with a kneelift for two. Fangman with a spinning toehold, but Kid kicks out of it and hits a german suplex for two. Leg lariat finishes at 6:28. Finish looked messed up for some reason but they just pretended the shoulders were down and counted anyway. **
Boni Blackstone talks with a fan named Clover, who wants to know where the Forest of Dean is located exactly?
Light heavyweight tournament round one: The Handsome Stranger v. Butch Blackheart
The Stranger, who wears a tuxedo to the ring and has a Lone Ranger mask as a disguise, is pretty young, like he just graduated from Sprayberry High School in Marietta GA. Butch Blackheart continues the tradition for this episode of the underneath guys having better wrestling names than the pushed stars. Butch hides in the ropes to evade the Stranger, but immediately makes the mistake of pointing to his head to indicate intelligence and then slaps the Stranger. The Stranger slugs away and dropkicks him before going to a headlock and holding that on the mat. Meanwhile the announcers discuss how you know the Stranger is a serious trainer in the gym because of the leg work he obviously does. I mean, unless he got calf implants, but who does THAT? Blackheart slugs away in the corner, but the Stranger goes right back to the headlock and then finishes with a fisherman’s suplex at 7:00 to advance. He was definitely not the stuff at this point, having to be walked through the match by the hand. Honestly this should have been about 3 minutes long, max. *
Meanwhile, The Patriot talks about his impending TV Title defenses against Stan Lane.
Adrian Street joins Boni to clarify the location of the Royal Forest of Dean. Did they not have Google Maps in 1991?
Light heavyweight tournament round one: Rip Rogers v. Ray Evans
Evans is certainly stretching the 237 pound weight limit for this thing. Evans takes him down and Rip claims a hairpull, so Ray goes to work on the arm, so Rip bails and complains about cheating. Back in the ring, they trade chops and Rip headbutts him down, but Evans cradles for two. Evans works a headlock, but Rip takes him to the floor and beats on him out there before slamming him onto the stage and dropping an elbow. Back in the ring, Evans misses a blind charge and Rip suplexes him for two. Evans fights back, but he puts his head down and Rip finishes him with a leaping DDT called The Hustle at 7:00 to advance. Just a match. *
And with finish with The Cartel again, as they still won’t reveal the identity of the Boss.
Next time: The tournament continues with the debut of a newcomer named Jerry Lynn!
A very pleasant and inoffensive hour of TV as they continue running through the tournaments and filling TV time.
