NXT – September 19, 2023

19th September 2023 by Thomas Hall

NXT
Date: September 19, 2023
Location: Capitol Wrestling Center, Orlando, Florida
Commentators: Vic Joseph, Booker T.

The big story around here is Becky Lynch winning the Women’s Title over Tiffany Stratton last week. Lynch has already taken the title to Raw and it is feeling like a big deal because of the star power she brings to it. Other than that, we have about a week and a half before No Mercy and it’s time to build things up. Let’s get to it.

The Secret Of The Ooze
Date: August 14, 2004
Location: Hollywood Los Feliz JCC
Attendance: 160
Commentators: Excalibur, Disco Machine

It’s back to PWG and I don’t think you can ask for a cooler title than that. As usual I have no idea what to expect from this show, but this is just over a year into the company’s history. That could be hit or miss, though this is far before the days when PWG became such an indy darling. Let’s get to it.

We’re less than three weeks out from Fastlane and that means it might be time to start announcing something for the show. So far there are no matches officially announced, though you should be able to figure out a few of them without much trouble. Other than that, Becky Lynch is he new NXT Women’s Champion and we’ll likely hear something about that. Let’s get to it.

How To Win Friends And Influence People

18th September 2023 by Daryl Stewart

https://itrwrestling.com/news/what-the-fck-is-la-knight-kevin-nash/

So what’s the blowoff to this, if anything? Can Nash resurrect himself for one last match with Knight? Show up for a promo battle with a proxy to compete for him? Will they snipe back and forth endlessly with no payoff at all?

Of course, the actual answer is probably workers gonna work and there’s no feud at all but that takes all the fun out of speculation.

In any event, what say you upon the matter? Answers on a postcard please!

The Final Countdown

18th September 2023 by Scott Keith
(Ok, low hanging fruit on the subject line, I grant you.)

Just thinking about Danielson and his approx 1 year left. What do you think about this for an idea on how to close it out?

At some point he comes out and says he is in the final stages now, but he's still the best wrestler on the planet and so he declares that he is putting up his very career as an open challenge. Each show/week he'll face anyone who wants to step up, and when someone finally beats him, that will be his final match.

It'd be up there, imo, with any title open challenge in prestige; someone could be instantly pushed up the pile as “the man who retired Bryan Danielson” and if you play it right you potentially have an instant new top-level heel on your show. Danielson also gets to go out on his back, but in the process can elevate a few challengers who come close. You could throw in a few dream matches as well just to add extra spice.

Could be a genuinely compelling run and a great way for him to hang up his boots as a full time competitor.

I think the problem is going to be convincing him to win that many matches in a row.  I bet they had to fight with him to beat Okada and Ricky Starks as it is.

AEW’s attendence issue

18th September 2023 by Scott Keith
Good morning Mr. Keith, hope all is finding you well.

First question, do you and your family have a switch? If not maybe fellow Doomers can give feedback. Debating on getting one for the house, (we have a total of 5 nieces and nephews that love sleepovers) for christmas and the Nintendo account library looks fun.

Anyhoot, with AEW's current attendance issue taking place, isn't this the perfect opportunity for them to establish that they are an alternative to WWE by running smaller, more unique and unorthodox venues? I love it when they return to Dailys Place!  Bring back the Jericho Cruise! They love Chicago so much, pick one of hundreds of amphitheatres in the area. Heading back to LA, screw it lets make a mini stage on a beach. Besides the stadium shows, can you even pickout the difference in venues of a raw or smackdown in the past 10 years, not including the covid era?

I have a Switch, but I don't get to play it anymore because my child has it monopolized with Animal Crossing, even though I bought her a Switch Lite with a copy of Animal Crossing on it for Christmas, for exactly that purpose.

And yeah, they really need to downsize their arena choices ASAP.  Even if you can make money doing 3000 in a basketball arena, the acoustics are all off for TV and it looks kind of embarrassing.  They should go back and watch some more 1997 RAW, where they were running 4000 seat buildings and making them look insanely packed with people.

Smackdown – June 13, 2008

18th September 2023 by Thomas Hall

Smackdown
Date: June 13, 2008
Location: Save Mart Center, Fresno, California
Attendance: 6,000
Commentators: Mick Foley, Michael Cole

We’re well on the way to Night Of Champions and Batista is the new #1 contender to Edge’s Smackdown World Title. That alone should make for a good build towards the show, but we’re going to need more than that. Smackdown’s midcard might not be the strongest, but I’m sure we’ll have some Chuck Palumbo involved. Let’s get to it.

The SmarK Rant for Prime Time Wrestling – 06.17.87

Fair warning, I’m on vacation for one more week.

Going back again to fill in the gaps from the WWE 24/7 era because I haven’t reviewed an episode since that period in time we shall not speak of.  For some reason this episode is June 17, even though it should really be June 15.  Maybe USA pre-empted it to a Wednesday that week for some reason, I dunno.

Your hosts are Bobby Heenan & Gorilla Monsoon, who immediately confirm that it’s a special Wednesday edition of the show.  I know you were all losing sleep over that one like me.

AEW focus suggestions

17th September 2023 by Scott Keith
Hey Scott,

Huge AEW fan but the overall product has lacked focus.  Not because of the Punk debacle.  The product overall is still great, the ppv’s all gazillion of them lately have been amazing.  I just wish the booking didn’t feel random, bloated at times and winging it.  Here’s a couple suggestions just to make it at least feel like logic exists…

Make the TNT championship exclusive to Collision (and ppvs) since Collision is the TNT show.

Same with TBS title on TBS/Dynamite (plus ppvs).

Love that the international championship has become the “fighting championship”, make it that the belt must be defended once a week or you get stripped.  This title defense can rotate between both dynamite and collision (and of course it’s on ppvs).

Now the bigger things…

Keep Ring of Honor separate! Embrace it as your NXT (at least what that used to be).  Like there used to be a rankings system in AEW, bring it back for ROH, you can use this as a way to build talent up to earn their way onto AEW aka “the main roster”.

Get rid of Rampage.

Tape Collision with Dynamite.  I know this is a lot of wrestling but it’s a ton of savings on travel and crew doing it in one night.  They aren’t WWE level yet.  Do the one show a week for now.  You can rotate and sometimes do Collision live and tape Dynamite.

Tape ROH before you go live and after the 2nd show you are taping. I.e split up the roh taping before your live show and after your AEW taped show.

To pull this off properly since it’s a lot of time to ask an audience.  You need to pre tape the backstage stuff and all the announcers running down future cards before the taping.  Speed up the production of anything being taped.  Ambitious yes, but I believe possible and helps them overall until they truly can justify spending on multiple days.

I'm certainly down with getting rid of Rampage at this point.

Aussie open v. FTR

17th September 2023 by Scott Keith

SK,

So you mentioned that you don’t get why Aussie Open lost the ROH titles to just go after the AEW ones… did you consider maybe FTR offended Australia thus making Aussie Open angry?

For instance maybe Uncle Dax didn’t believe Cash that toilets flush backwards in Australia leading Dax to place a collect call to Kyle Fletcher for $900 dollarydoos to get an answer?  Or maybe FTR mocked the tradition of giving criminals a booting, itself a bootable offense?

BTW should TK steal these ideas or rename Aussie Open’s finisher “knifey spooney” they are guaranteed to triple their ratings.

I'm all for a little fun but the knifey-spooney epidemic in our country is a real hot button issue right now and I'm worried that mocking it would only make it more painful for the families of those affected by it.  Maybe we should just call it the “Shrimp on the Barbie” instead?
