AAA Triplemania Night Two: Arena CDMX – 09.13.26

The second night of AAA’s 34th Triplemania comes to Youtube from Arena CDMX in Mexico City, Mexico. The announcing team(s) on tonight’s show include Corey Graves and John Bradshaw Layfield handling English-speaking duties, Roberto Figueroa and Jose Manuel Guillen on the call for the Spanish announcing side of things, and Lilian Garcia and Jesus Zuniga splitting ring announcing. Night One proved to be a solid start to the event, and there are two immense title matches at the top of this card. We’ve been waiting a long time for this one, so let’s watch some lucha!

Here’s a look back at Night One, followed by a preview of tonight’s card. Tonight, Triplemania takes over Mexico City!

Arrivals: AAA Cruiserweight Champion Rey Fenix chats with a child. AAA Reina de Reinas Champion Flammer and her stablemate AAA Mixed Tag Team Champion La Hiedra have a short chat before entering. Here’s Flammer’s challenger La Catalina heading into the arena. Next in is Psycho Clown. Finally, El Grande Americano enters, and we get a look at EGA’s nemesis AAA Mega Champion Dominik Mysterio who’s in a limo with Dorian Roldan and Omos.

Graves and JBL welcome us to a sold-out Arena CDMX and Jesus Zuniga introduces our first match.

Copa Bardahl

As a reminder, this is a match very similar to WWE’s Royal Rumble, with the biggest difference being that competitors can be eliminated from the match by pinfall and submission, as well as being tossed over the top rope. Tirantes is your referee on the outside. Mr. Iguana accompanied by La Yesca is out first. Abismo Negro is out second. Abismo presses Iguana, but he slips off and nails Abismo with a tilt-a-whirl armdrag. An Iguana-rana follows and Iguana slaps on an armbar. Next out is Histeria, who immediately joins his stable-mate Abismo in putting the boots to Iguana. Abismo tries a cover and gets two. Los Vipers team up and try to dump Iguana, but he holds on enough to fight that off. Here’s Mascarita Sagrada out next at #4. Sagrada dumps Abismo with a rana and smacks Histeria around a bit. Abismo inadvertently nails Histeria with a right when Sagrada slips out of the way, and Sagrada rolls up Abismo for two. Iguana fires up with La Yesca causing a bunch of damage. Histeria pounds away on Sagrada in a corner, and here’s Taurus out at #5.

Taurus is also a member of Los Vipers, and he and his stablemates take over with their overwhelming numbers and size advantage. There’s a triple team of Iguana that ends with a double stomp to his nuts by Histeria. Sagrada breaks up an attempted cover and Los Vipers decide to target him instead. Los Vipers put the boots to Sagrada and here’s El Fiscal at #6. Fiscal wants Abismo and mashes Histeria and Taurus around before going off with Abismo. Fiscal dumps Abismo for the first elimination but Abismo charges back in and dumps Fiscal out. They fight the whole way up the aisle and here’s AAA Mixed Tag Team Champion Laredo Kid in at #7. Laredo squares off with Taurus and Histeria and hits a Destroyer. Laredo drives Sagrada down, and then squares up with Iguana. Here’s Mecha Wolf in at #8. Mecha runs wild for a minute before getting slapped by La Yesca. Iguana and Sagrada get stacked up and Mecha grabs a cover on Iguana for two. Here’s AAA Latin American Champion La Parka in at #9. Parka crushes Los Vipers and mashes Laredo with a facebuster. Parka eliminates Taurus with a dropkick and then eliminates Histeria with the Bonebreaker.

Parka and Iguana shake hands to indicate all is forgiven from Night One, and here’s El Mesias in at #10. Mesias wrecks a bunch of guys with various destruction and Mesias grabs a cover on Laredo for two. Here’s Dinamico in at #11. Dinamico hits Laredo with a cutter and drops Iguana with a powerbomb. Dinamico hits a Shining Wizard on Parka and covers him for two. Mecha comes in and he and Dinamico slug it out a bit before Dinamico crushes Mecha with a springboard cutter. Mecha fires some black mist at Dinamico and Mesias crushes him with a spear. Mesias covers and eliminates Dinamico. Here’s Texano Jr in at #12. Texano mashes Laredo and Mecha around before squaring off with old rival Mesias. Texano hits a leaping leg lariat and covers Mesias for two. Here’s Omos in at #13 and everyone in the ring pauses as the big fella makes his entrance. Omos predictably smashes everyone around before Sagrada steps to him. Sagrada gets yanked up and everyone attacks. Omos eliminates Texano, Laredo, and Mesias in short order. Omos chokeslams Mecha and pins him.

Omos eliminates La Parka with a lariat and does a little strut. Here’s Chris Carter in at #14 and after psyching himself up, he charges in to be caught by Omos off a dive. Omos presses Carter and heaves him onto a pile of eliminated wrestlers. Here’s Nino Hamberguesa in at #15. Nino smashes Omos around a bit before Omos has had enough of that. Omos eliminates Iguana, but leaves himself open a bit as Sagrada tries and partially succeeds in taking Omos over the top rope with a rana. Sagrada tumbles out, and we’re left with Omos and Nino as our final two. Omos pulls himself up and yanks Nino over the top rope to win the Copa Bardahl for the second straight year.

This got the crowd going, as most Rumble-type matches do. The return of Hamberguesa got a solid pop, and it was cool to see Texano and Mesias go at it again as well. For the most part, this was entrances and eliminations, if you get my drift. 2.5*

Winner – Omos (Eliminates Nino Hamberguesa to win)

After commercials, it’s time for a huge title match!

AAA Reina de Reinas Championship: Flammer (C) vs La Catalina

Graves mentions Stephanie Vaquer winning the WWE Women’s World Championship last night in Santiago as being motivation for country-woman La Catalina to take Flammer’s title. Flammer is out alone to start, so we’ll see if the rest of Las Toxicas join her at some point.

Flammer dumps Catalina down by her hair and they square off. Catalina trucks Flammer and wallops her with a basement dropkick. Catalina smacks Flammer with a lariat and Flammer yanks Catalina out to the floor. Flammer gains the advantage and puts the boots to Catalina before smacking her in the chest a few times. Flammer drops Catalina into a double chicken wing, so Catalina kicks her way out of it. Flammer clubbers away and they start slugging it out. Flammer slaps on a guillotine and Catalina dumps her over to break that up. Catalina fires up and Flammer ends up on the apron. Catalina hits a glancing Hip Attack and spears Flammer on the floor. Catalina comes off the barricade with a splash and fires Flammer back into the ring. Catalina ascends and waffles Flammer with a missile dropkick. Catalina hits a running leg lariat and covers Flammer for two.

Flammer gets yanked into a modified Gory Bomb and Catalina’s cover gets two. Catalina misses a dive and Flammer hits a double stomp. Flammer yanks Catalina into a modified implant driver and gets two. Flammer puts the boots to Catalina and they start slugging it out. Catalina spears Flammer and covers her for two. Catalina starts smacking Flammer in a corner and goes up for some right hands. Flammer yanks Catalina into a Cheeky Nandos before dropping her with a powerbomb that gets two. Flammer rolls Catalina into a corner and ascends for a swanton that misses. Catalina ascends for a splash that gets two. Flammer fires off some back elbows and drops Catalina with a Codebreaker. Flammer mashes Catalina with a running dropkick and tosses Catalina back in. Flammer appears to be looking for her stablemates as Catalina yanks her down from the second rope. Catalina hits another Hip Attack and fires off a Baisaku knee to win the title!

The finish kind of came out of nowhere and I’m guessing the story here will be that neither Hiedra or Maravilla came to Flammer’s aid for the first time in forever. Catalina ends an over 1100 day reign at Triplemania in what surely will be her career highlight as of now. Good match, but never got to what I’d call a great level. 3*

Mexico City Street Fight: Psycho Clown vs El Carnicero

Psycho attacks at the bell and drives Carnicero into the barricade. Carnicero responds with a high boot and Psycho grabs a kendo stick. Psycho hits Carnicero a bunch before the big guy grabs the kendo stick and snaps it in half. Carnicero smacks Psycho with a trashcan when he charges. Carnicero pounds on Psycho from behind and grabs a chair for a few shots to Psycho’s back. Carnicero pounds away with the chair. Psycho uses the chair to crotch Carnicero when he tries a running legdrop. Psycho fires off a few chairshots of his own and goes out for a SLIM JIM table. Psycho sets up the table and Carnicero punches the chair out of his hands when Psycho tries for more damage. They start slugging it out and Carnicero runs head-first into the chair. Psycho nails Carnicero with a trashcan to send him on to the top of the table. Psycho ascends and splashes Carnicero through the table before covering and getting two. They start slugging it out again and Psycho rips off his top mask. Psycho grabs a trashcan and runs right into a high boot from Carnicero. Carnicero ties Psycho up in the ropes and goes to the floor for a toolbox. Here’s Pagano out to grab a kendo stick and he pauses before pointing Carnicero at Psycho. Carnicero ends things with a toolbox shot to Psycho’s head.

Your typical plunder brawl here but there was good crowd heat for this because Psycho is absolutely beloved by the crowds in Mexico. The ending and the post-match didn’t surprise me all that much and we’ll see where this leads. If you like violence, this was your jam. 2.5*

Winner – El Carnicero (Toolbox shot to Psycho’s head)

Post-match sees Pagano hand Carnicero his kendo stick and he uses it repeatedly on the helpless Psycho. Pagano and Carnicero stand over the fallen Psycho as the crowd rains down boos.

Here’s El Ojo backstage, with Dorian Roldan putting over their successes including Omos winning his second straight Copa Bardahl. Dom mentions El Grande Americano being alone and asks Omos to stay in the back. Roldan mentions that his mother has noticed Rey Mysterio making a series of mistakes and the one who will pay for all of it is EGA.

Octagon Jr. is at ringside and he gets a big hand as he’s recovering from a very difficult injury.

AAA Cruiserweight Championship: Rey Fenix (C) vs Jack Cartwheel vs Mini Vikingo vs Nathan Frazer

Fenix walks past AAA Trios Champions Los Perros del Mal (Daga, Los Garza, and Karmen Petrovic) backstage before entering. Fenix shakes everyone’s hand prior to the bell. Graves lets us know that the Mega Championship main event match is suddenly No DQ. Alright then.

There’s chaos after the bell and Cartwheel ends up crushing Frazer with his Slam Stand from the apron. Cartwheel hits a rolling senton and covers Frazer for two. Frazer slips a charge and nails Cartwheel with a sling blade. Vikingo gets dumped and Frazer covers him for two as Fenix breaks up the cover. Fenix smashes Frazer with a springboard enziguri and goes back in. Vikingo and Cartwheel combine to drop Fenix, and Vikingo hits a Destroyer on Fenix that gets two. Vikingo crushes Frazer and Cartwheel with a top rope torneo before going back in. Fenix gets crushed by a poison rana and Vikingo covers him for two.

Vikingo ascends and Fenix mashes him with an uppercut. Cartwheel and Frazer are back in and Fenix drops them both with a double cutter. Fenix blasts Vikingo with a running kick and ascends. Fenix hits a moonsault on Vikingo on the floor and then goes back in. Fenix yanks Carthweel up for a Death Valley Driver and then blasts a charging Frazer with a kaman giri. Fenix hits a springboard moonsault and covers Frazer for two. Fenix ascends and Frazer springs up for a Spanish Fly that gets two. Frazer hits Vikingo with a tope and then delivers one to Cartwheel and Fenix as well. Frazer runs Fenix back in and ascends but Fenix pops up and tosses Frazer over on his face. Fenix runs into a Frazer high boot and Frazer’s cover gets two.

Cartwheel yanks Frazer into a small package that gets two. Frazer dumps Cartwheel but his subsequent dive misses and he crashes into the American announce table. Fenix fires up the crowd and ascends but Carthweel springs up for a powerbomb on the champ. Carthweel ascends and Vikingo knocks him off the top. Vikingo hits a top rope crucifix driver and runs right into a Cartwheel German. Cartwheel nails Fenix with a Sky Twister Press and Frazer breaks up the cover at two. There’s a four-way standoff and everyone eats superkicks. We reset again with everyone down.

Fenix nails Carthweel with his running kaman giri and yanks up fro the MMB. Fenix covers and Vikingo breaks it up with a Shooting Star Press. Vikingo covers Cartwheel and gets two. Fenix runs into a high boot and responds with a superkick to Vikingo. Fenix goes up and yanks Vikingo into MMB position, but Frazer intervenes and crushes Fenix with a Phoenix splash that gets two. Frazer and Cartwheel slug it out and they exchange enziguris. Frazer runs into an Exploder and Cartwheel nails Fenix and Vikingo with a Sasuke Special. Cartwheel crushes Frazer with the Sky Twister Press and gets two. Vikingo dumps Fenix and ascends for a 630 on Cartwheel, but Fenix recovers and runs in for a MMB on Vikingo to retain his title.

I need to take a walk after that. Good lord, what a display of athleticism. Now, if you’re looking for in-match storytelling, this isn’t your thing. If you enjoy high spots, this was your jimmy jam. I thought Cartwheel stood out a lot here and I hope he gets more opportunities in the future. I was surprised Vikingo took the pin but as the youngest luchador in the match, I suppose booking him to take the loss makes a bit of sense. He’ll obviously have his opportunities in the future. Fenix continues his reign and can now go back to his tour of WWE defending this title. Fun match but very spot-oriented. 3.5*

Winner AND STILL AAA Cruiserweight Champion – Rey Fenix (Mexican Muscle Buster on Mini Vikingo)

Post-match sees Los Perros del Mal approach the backstage board control and ask him to play their ORIGINAL theme music. He complies and the crowd pops HUGE for this theme. Los Perros attack all the cruiserweights still in the ring and destroy everyone thoroughly. Daga calls for calm and tells the crowd that GOD FORGIVES, LOS PERROS DO NOT.

AAA Tag Team Championship: The War Raiders (Erik and Ivar) (C) vs El Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr and Galeno

It’s DW3 and Erik to start, and Erik misses a charge as DW3 drops him with a splash. Ivar tags in and DW3 smashes him around before tagging in Galeno. The Wagners combine for a rolling splash before Galeno covers Ivar for two. DW3 tags back in and Ivar bails to the floor. DW3 smashes Erik with a high boot which gives Ivar time to yank DW3 down and drive him into the barricade. Ivar fires DW3 back in after a splash and covers him for two. Erik tags in and he and Ivar clubber away on DW3. Ivar tags in and smashes DW3 with a knee. Erik hits a knee as well and Ivar covers DW3 for two.

Erik tags in and smashes Galeno on the apron before grabbing DW3 to prevent a tag. DW3 fires up and he and Erik smash each other with lariats. Ivar and Galeno get tags and Galeno runs wild on the Raiders from corner to corner. Galeno yanks Erik up for a slam and then crushes him with a splash. Ivar ends the flurry with a standing senton and then ascends. Ivar hits a moonsault on Galeno and gets two. Erik tags in and he and Ivar can’t fight a fired up Galeno off. DW3 tags in and eats a rolling slam that gets two. Galeno breaks up another cover attempt at two and he mashes the Raiders with a tope con hilo. DW3 hits the Wagner Driver on Erik. Galeno follows with a frog splash that ends things and gives the brothers the titles!

I thought when this was announced as a TBA defense that whomever came out was probably taking the titles, and the Wagners are a fine choice to do that. The titles will probably go back to being AAA-centric at this point instead of occasionally showing up on Smackdown, and this frees up the Raiders to rejoin that tag scene more permanently. This felt a bit rushed as I’m sure the main event will need some time, but was still a solid hoss battle. 3*

AAA Mega Championship: Dominik Mysterio (C) vs El Grande Americano

EGA’s entrance is something to behold, as usual. We have, as the kids like to say, A BIG FIGHT FEEL here. Mysterio enters with Dorian Roldan accompanying him, and wearing his own version of the Mysterio family mask. As a reminder, this was made No DQ earlier in the show, so I’d expect a few people to show up along the way. Jesus Zuniga does in-ring intros, and off we go.

EGA hits a dropkick at the start and pounds away in a corner. EGA smashes Mysterio down with a lariat and drives him down with a tope suicida. EGA drives Mysterio’s head into the announce table and then lariats him into the AAA UNIVERSE. They fight in the crowd and EGA continues to pound away. Mysterio goes to the eyes to break up the flurry and pounds away. Mysterio sends EGA over the barricade and back to ringside before slapping his chest. EGA fires up with some slaps of his own and then sends Mysterio into the ring steps. EGA pulls the ring steps apart and pulls Mysterio up but Roldan distracts long enough to allow Mysterio to dump EGA’s head onto the ring step bottom. Mysterio finds a chair and goes right for EGA’s damaged ribs. Mysterio runs EGA back in and grabs the chair. Mysterio lays in a bunch of chair shots but EGA fires up for some ground and pound. Mysterio again goes to the eyes and fires off some more chair shots on a helpless EGA.

Roldan produces his belt and hands it to Mysterio who decides it’s COUNTRY WHIPPIN’ time. Mysterio raises a bunch of welts on EGA and smashes EGA in the head with a few shots. EGA gets a hand on the belt and refuses to let go before mashing Mysterio with a lariat. EGA mounts Mysterio in a corner for some right hands, before following with a running knee that gets two. EGA finds the belt and wears Mysterio out for a bit before pulling him up for a rolling senton. EGA hits a big kick and covers Mysterio for two. EGA puts the belt in Mysterio’s mouth and slaps on La Cavernaria. Here’s JD McDonagh in to headbutt EGA when he charges over to intercept. Mysterio hits a 619 and gets two.

Here’s Rayo and Bravo Americano out to fight with McDonagh and they all go up the aisle and towards the back. Bravo ascends and crushes the entire pile with a huge dive. EGA hits an Air Raid Crash and covers Mysterio for two. Rayo and Bravo try to come down to ringside and here’s Omos out to crush them both in the aisle. Omos gets hit by a tope suicida from EGA to zero effect, and Omos starts smashing EGA around before driving him back-first into a ringpost. Omos goozles EGA who goes to Omos’s eyes to break it up. EGA smashes Omos in the nuts and then starts beating on Omos with a chair. Omos charges and goes through the timekeeper’s barricade region. EGA goes in and headbutts Mysterio down. EGA drops the straps and crushes Mysterio with a running headbutt that gets two.

EGA ascends slowly and Mysterio springs up to slug it out with him. Mysterio topples over and EGA rises but here’s Liv Morgan out to trip EGA up and send him tumbling to the mat. Mysterio hits a second 619 and ascends for a frog splash that gets two. A frustrated Mysterio kicks out at EGA and this causes EGA to fire up. EGA inadvertently drops the referee with a running headbutt. Morgan gives the title belt to Mysterio and he mashes EGA in the back with it. Mysterio ascends for another frog splash but EGA slips out and Mysterio eats it on the mat. EGA runs the ropes and blasts Mysterio with another running headbutt and here’s Rey Mysterio in with a referee’s shirt on to count three.

I think there will be wildly varying opinions on this match due to the No DQ being added in so that all the outside stuff could happen, and I think ratings will be all over the place as a result. For me, I expected a lot of things to come into play with this and so I was neither surprised nor all that upset with the interference on both sides. I think that you, the viewer, have witnessed one of the most incredible rises of a hero in a long time throughout this past year, and EGA caps it off by claiming the Mega title at the biggest show of the year. Now, FOR ME, this spectacle wasn’t at the same level as Mask vs Mask was and had a much different vibe, but the heat was still incredible and the crowd went bonkers for the finish. All in all, I was happy with what I saw and I’m also happy to hear your opinions on things. 4*

Winner AND NEW AAA Mega Champion – El Grande Americano

Post-match sees a Mariachi band emerge for a version of “Cielito Lindo” as EGA celebrates mid-ring. EGA and Rey have a moment and EGA sits down on the mat as the crowd serenades him. EGA holds the belt high and checks the goosebumps on his arm. The credits roll and we’re out.

The main event delivered, as expected. Overall, over two nights, I thought this was a solid outing for the brand, but maybe not the home run they were hoping for. Friday ended on a huge downer with Omos destroying Rey Mysterio, so they made up for it with mega-babyface and national hero EGA claiming the Mega title on Night Two. It was a lot of lucha, and like I said, I enjoyed it, but there were things that I think could have been better. I suspect we’ll see a lot of new things on this brand now that we have new champions basically across the board.
