The SmarK Rant for WWF Superstars – 03.21.87
Taped from Dayton, OH on 03.10.87
Your hosts are Vince McMahon, Bruno Sammartino & Jesse Ventura
The Iron Sheik v. Hacksaw Jim Duggan
An enraged Duggan storms the ring with his 2×4 to break up the singing of the Russian national anthem, because no foreigners are gonna enjoy first amendment protections on his watch! Because America is the land of the free! Tough guy! And that’s about it, as there’s no match.
UPDATE! WITH MEAN GENE OKERLUND!
We get a promo from Billy Jerk Haynes, who claims to be the best at fully nelsoning people. And uh yeah, that’s it.
Meanwhile, Craig DeGeorge chats with Sheik & Volkoff
Cowboy Bob Orton & Magnificent Muraco v. Corporal Kirchner & Mario Mancini
The Corporal slugs away on Orton but takes a knee from Muraco on the apron to turn the tide. Over to Mancini, and Muraco immediately plasters him with a clothesline as we get an inset from the Can-Am Connection. And then Lanny Poffo randomly joins us on commentary to read a poem about Hulk Hogan. And the heels finish Mancini with a Rockerplex at 1:47. This is a frenetic episode of the show, to say the least.
Meanwhile, the Rougeau Brothers are racing skidoos and they meet the BONHOMME!
Adrian Adonis v. Jim Young
Young, looking a bit like Kenny Omega, grabs a headlock and gets a sunset flip for two, but Adonis lays him out with a clothesline out of the corner and puts the boots to him. We get an inset from Brutus Beefcake, who is firmly on Team Piper now and wants to see Adonis shaved bald. Adonis stands Young up and stiffs him with a clothesline, and then Good Night Irene finishes at 1:35. Vince actually put over Young as rising up in the business, but he was done with wrestling by the end of March.
Meanwhile, Mene Gene gifts Mary Hart the official WWF stopwatch to use at Wrestlemania III, but it doesn’t work.
Meanwhile, Bob Uecker chats with Jimmy Hart about Alice Cooper.
The British Bulldogs & Tito Santana v. Steve Lombardi, Rick Renslow & Al Navarro
Lombardi slugs it out with Davey to start, but Davey hits him with a press slam and Tito comes in to work the arm. Dropkick sends Lombardi running and it’s over to Renslow. Davey slams him and that brings in Navarro, but the babyfaces work him over in the corner while Kid is conspicuous by his lack of involvement in this match thus far. Davey with the running powerslam on Navarro and he cleans house on the heels all by himself, and Tito finishes with the flying forearm at 2:38. Kid literally never even tagged in here, obviously still held together by band-aids and prayers at this point.
Piper’s Pit with special guest Jack Tunney. And he’s got a new belt to show off, the redesigned Hogan 86 belt intended to fit Andre the Giant if he wins at Wrestlemania. That’s a really nice belt and I’m actually disappointed they never used it. I mean look at this thing:
Much like Wrestlemania III, it’s BIGGER BETTER AND BADDER.
WRESTLEMANIA III REPORT! WITH MEAN GENE!
We run down the lineup again with just a week to go before the show.
Meanwhile, we go back to Saturday Night’s Main Event, as Andre meets up with Hogan in a battle royale and it doesn’t go well for the Hulkster. Between that and the new belt, I’m 100% convinced that Andre is walking out with that title now.
The Honky Tonk Man v. Leaping Lanny Poffo
Honky has thankfully ditched the suspenders and moved to his more well known look, and he quickly finishes Poffo with Shake Rattle & Roll at 0:36. Still lasted longer than Katie Zacharias.
Next week: The Can-Am Connection! Butch Reed! Jake the Snake! The Hart Foundation!
