The SmarK Rant for Mid-South Wrestling – 12.04.82
Gonna take an extra day before Nitro again because I got all caught up in the hot dog eating excitement on Monday night and now I need a short show to review. Stay tuned for Miss Peacockery’s exclusive Blog of Doom review of CHESTNUT V. KOBIYASHI: UNFINISHED BEEF later today!
Speaking of men who love beef…
Taped from Shreveport, LA
Your hosts are Boyd Pierce & Bob Roop. Is he STILL around?
Meanwhile, Cowboy Bill Watts donates proceeds from a special show to representatives from the American Legion, who host the Irish McNeil Boy’s Club where Mid-South is taped. $1000 for them!
Stagger Lee v. Marty Lunde
I actually added “Stagger Lee” to my Spotify playlist the other day. Stagger gets a slam on Marty and puts him down with a clothesline, then uses a powerslam that looks suspiciously like the Thump to finish at 0:52. I have some theories about the identity of that mysterious masked fellow that I’ll be sharing on Twitter.
Kamala v. King Cobra
Kamala charges in while the announcers remind us about Kamala coming after masked men and stealing their masks. Cobra holds off Kamala with dropkicks, but Kamala uses the overhead chops to stagger him and then chokes him out on the mat. Big splash finishes at 1:47.
Mr. Wrestling II v. Yoshi Yatsu
Before the match, Wrestling II again shows a threatening message from a mysterious enemy, and he’s sick of this shit and wants the guy to “come out of the closet” and face him like a man. Yatsu grabs a headlock and Wrestling II backdrops him and takes him down with his own headlock. Snapmare gets two. Wrestling II hits him with the kneelift and gets two, but Kamala runs in for the DQ at 1:55. Kamala lays him out and goes for the mask, but Stagger Lee makes the save and hits Kamala with an effortless powerslam in a crazy spot. But then Kamala NO-SELLS it and pops up, destroying Stagger Lee and splashing him. Finally Mr. Olympia hits the ring and he helps out, teaming up with Wrestling II to throw dropkicks and chase Kamala off. This was AWESOME.
Ted Dibiase & Matt Borne v. Mr. Olympia & Iron Mike Sharpe
Non-title match this week. Olympia gets a quick bodypress on Dibiase for two and controls the heels with armdrags while Roop declares that “it’s been nothing but heat” from the crowd for the last match. No surprised, it was a crazy segment. Over to Sharpe, who dodges an elbow from Dibiase and beats him down with forearms before chasing him out of the ring. Back in, they trade wristlocks and Olympia comes in to work the arm, and then Matt Borne comes in for more of the same. The babyfaces control him in the corner, but Dibiase gets a cheapshot on Sharpe from the apron and the champs go to work. Dibiase drops an elbow for two. Olympia gets a hot tag, but the ref is distracted with Sharpe and Borne hits Olympia with the bombs away off the top and Dibiase gets the pin at 6:20.
Chavo Guerrero v. Bobby Jaggers
This is footage from Houston as the relationship between Watts and Boesch grows closer. Chavo works the arm and Jaggers escapes from that with some elbows, and drops a knee for two. Jaggers works a chinlock and drops a knee on him to take over before going back to the chinlock and using the hair to keep Chavo down. Chavo fights out of that and comes back with a monkey flip and dropkicks, and a rana to finish at 5:51.
Lelani Kai v. Princess Victoria
Kai takes her down with a pair of wristlocks while Bob Roop discusses the rise of feminism and equality for women in sports. Victoria with a leglock, but Kai chokes her out to escape and slams her for two. Flying forearm gets two. Victoria makes a comeback and puts Kai down with a back elbow and slam for two. Small package gets two. Kai puts the boots to her and goes up, but misses a splash and Victoria finishes with a bodypress at 4:33. This was a fine match. Maybe women will get the vote someday too, who knows?
Hacksaw Duggan v. Mike Bond
Duggan slugs away in the corner and backdrops him before dropping a knee for two. Bond slugs back and Duggan just absorbs it and batters Bond down in response, as Bob Roop is as impressed by the craftiness of the Gorilla Suit deal as I was. Roop knows the deal, gorillas rule! Running headbutt finishes at 2:00. And then Duggan runs by the desk, ranting about how Tony Atlas doesn’t have the GUTS to face him, and he promises that the next time Atlas shows his cowardly face, he wants a match on TV. Boyd makes him no promises, but Atlas WILL be here next week, so make your own conclusions from that.
Damn fine episode, as we continue the mystery attacker storyline with Wrestling II and Kamala v. Stagger Lee is suddenly a very hot program. Now I feel ready for tackling Nitro again tomorrow.
