The SmarK Rant for Coliseum Video presents the 2nd Battle of the WWF Superstars

Who knew that “Battle of the WWF Superstars” was actually a trilogy of releases? This second volume came out in 1991, just as the world was finally recovering from the superstars battling the first time in 1990.
Your host is Sean Mooney, doing a Patton riff this time, like all the kids were into in 1991. He makes a joke about your grandchildren “watching reruns of the Simpsons” thirty years later instead of this tape, which was supposed to be a comment on how no one would remember that silly cartoon show in the far future. Interesting how no one saw the longevity of that show coming.
Meanwhile, General Mooney meets his troops.
Intercontinental title: Mr. Perfect v. Rowdy Roddy Piper
Well this is quite the opener. I recently saw a house show match between them on a Toronto show but I didn’t know about this one. Roddy does a slow striptease for Perfect and immediately chases him to the floor. Back in the ring, Piper gently tells the ref to get lost and challenges Perfect to a bout of fisticuffs. So Piper wins that one as Perfect manages to take a wacky bump off that and thinks it over on the floor. Back in the ring, he throws chops on Piper, but Roddy gets all fired up and chops him out to the floor and then back in for a hairtoss as Perfect goes sliding into the post. They brawl on the floor and back in for another slugfest, but Piper grabs the tights and won’t let Perfect fall down until he’s ready. Finally Perfect goes to the eyes, but Piper yanks his pants down and slugs Perfect down again. So Perfect uses his gear to choke out Piper on the ropes as they do every goofy schtick they can think of, and they collide for a double down. Perfect is up first and is finally able to get his tights back on, and he slugs Piper down and then hits him with the standing dropkick to send Piper to the apron. Perfect brings him in for a suplex, but Piper counters into a cradle for two. They turn that into a cradle reversal sequence for two and Piper gets a neckbreaker for two. Piper makes sure to land on Hebner when Perfect kicks out, and that allows Perfect to run Piper into an exposed turnbuckle. Piper is OUT and NOW YOU’RE GONNA SEE A PERFECTPLEX, complete with a wedgie, but Piper KICKS OUT?! Perfect tries to run him into the steel again, but Piper makes the comeback and Perfect takes the buckle and goes flying. They fight to the floor and Perfect takes more bumps out there while Piper whips him with a belt. Back in the ring, Perfect goes up and Piper crotches him on the exposed steel, and Perfect lands on the floor and gets counted out at 12:24. This was SPECTACULAR and everything I wanted out of it. Basically two high level workers in their prime doing a Bushwhacker match. ***1/2. And afterwards, Piper knocks out Perfect with the IC title to get his heat back. Hopefully he’ll get a chance to hold it himself for real someday.
The Bushwhackers v. The Nasty Boys
We are in MSG sometime early in 1991. I’ve probably seen and reviewed this one before but it’s a Fan Favorite request from some kid who wrote it on a postcard so it’s the least I can do. Knobs beats on Luke in the corner and it’s immediately a pier-six brawl, which results in the Nasties getting run out to the floor. Back in, the Whackers do some double-teaming, but inevitably get outsmarted and Luke gets worked over by the Nasties. Nasties drop double elbows on his back behind the ref’s back for two. Sags misses a blind charge and Butch gets a hot tag and throws forearms for two. But then Knobs cuts him off with a clothesline for two. More brawling, but Knobs tries a slam on Butch and Luke pushes them over for two. And then Sags goes up and nails Butch off the top for the pin at 7:50. Next. *
Bret Hart v. The Barbarian
Another one from MSG, 11.24.90, and I know for sure I’ve seen this one before and we probably all remember the finish. The ref holds up Bret’s half of the tag team titles here as if it was on the line. It’s not. Barbarian pounds on Bret with forearms and chokes him out in the corner, but he misses the elbow off the middle rope and Bret makes a comeback. Bret with a legsweep and his own middle rope elbow for two. Clothesline for two, which the ref counts as three and they just ignore him and continue on. Barbarian with a powerslam for two. Bret tries a piledriver and then turns it into a sunset flip, but Barbarian blocks it and sits down. But then he makes the mistake of posing, and Bret hooks the arms and pins him at 4:04. Nothing to this one. *1/2
And now it’s TRIVIA TEST time!
Question 1: Hulk Hogan wants to know the official symbol of Hulkamaniacs during his return against Earthquake?
Question 2: What team was known as the Pink and Black Attack?
Question 3: Why was Big Bossman so upset with Bobby Heenan?
Question 4: What is Mr. Perfect’s finishing move?
Question 5: What caused Jake Roberts to lose his vision?
Jake Roberts v. Kato
Back to TV taping dark matches now. Jake with the wristlock and Kato tries to run away, but Jake drags him back in for more wristlockery. Jake slugs him down and Kato bails for a conference with Tanaka. Back in, Kato misses the enzuigiri and Jake tries for the DDT, but Kato bails to escape. Back in, Jake slugs him down and follows with a kneelift, but Kato clowns around and runs away from the DDT again. Back in the ring, Jake misses a blind charge and Fuji gets a cheapshot with the cane to turn the tide. Back in the ring, Kato goes to the chinlock, but Jake quickly fights out and Tanaka hits him behind the ref’s back to break that up. But then it’s DDT OUTTA NOWHERE and Tanaka has to run in for the DQ for real at 7:00. So then Jake beats up both Orient Express guys and Fuji by himself and clears the ring. Nothing to this one. ½*
Hacksaw Jim Duggan takes us back to Glen’s Falls NY to show off his 2×4 Hall of Fame, featuring notable boards from his life.
Flag match: WWF champion Sgt. Slaughter v. Hacksaw Jim Duggan
Back to MSG and obviously we’d be in February of 1991 based on Sarge’s title reign. This one is non-title, though. In a nice touch, Sean Mooney explains the presence of Bobby & Gorilla at ringside as them doing commentary for the “Armed Forces Network”, which is more thought than they usually put into these things. Hulk Hogan as usual sticks his nose into someone else’s business, coming out to second Duggan despite literally no one asking for it or wanting it. The crowd completely turns on him, too, chanting BOOOOOOO S.A., where “S.A.” is the abbreviation for “stupid asshole” that all the kids were using in 1991. Duggan slugs away on Sarge in the corner to start and stomps his hand when he bails to the floor. Back in the ring, Slaughter claims a hairpull, and Duggan runs him into the corner a few times, triggering Slaughter’s ringpost bump. Duggan puts his head down and Slaughter slugs him down and chokes him out on the ropes before getting a sleeper. The logical issue here is that cutting off the oxygen to Duggan’s brain isn’t likely to have any effect. Duggan runs him into the corner to break free, but Slaughter gets a backbreaker for two to take over again. Sarge to the top with a flying knee for two. Sarge goes up again, but cheating sore loser Hogan pushes him off behind the ref’s back and then goes after Adnan for no reason as well. So Slaughter rightly goes to defend his manager and chokes out Hogan to teach him a lesson about mind his own beeswax. Back in the ring, Slaughter works the back and puts Duggan in the camel clutch, but no good cheating Hogan runs in with the board and knocks Slaughter out to break it up. So they do a bizarre double down sequence where the ref is counting them both down like it’s a Texas Death match, and they take turns beating the count, and then Adnan just runs in for the DQ at 13:00. Another shitty match with a shitty finish. *
Back with Duggan’s lumber pile, as he finds his lumber guy, Woody, and cuts his brand new 2×4 to his exact specs. Presumably for this match…
Hacksaw Jim Duggan v. Demolition Smash
So yeah, we’re post heel turn for Demolition with a Challenge taping dark match, as they don’t even have the awesome theme anymore and they’re back with Fuji like a broken spouse crawling back to an abusive husband. Duggan with clotheslines and he punches Smash down, but Fuji gets a shot with the cane and Smash takes over. Smash beats on Duggan and drops a leg for two. Duggan fights out of a chinlock and comes back with a clothesline, and then finishes with the three point stance at 6:14. It was looking like they were gonna do a DQ finish there and I wouldn’t have been shocked. DUD
WWF title: Ultimate Warrior v. Randy Savage
Another Challenge dark match, which surprisingly didn’t make the Savage Unreleased DVD. Warrior blitzes him with shoulderblocks, hits the press slam and splash, and PINS HIM IN 90 SECONDS? WTF? They can’t even give me a good Macho-Warrior match on here? Savage must have been badly hurt at the end of 1990 based on him doing these quick jobs over and over.
Tugboat v. Ted Dibiase
Another Challenge dark match, as Tugboard hits Dibiase with clotheslines to chase him out of the ring, and back in for a whip to the corner that sends Dibiase to the floor again. Really, “Millionaire vs Living Personification of a Water Vessel” is a trope that wrestling does over and over to diminishing returns each time. They fight on the floor and Dibiase runs him into the stairs to take over. Back in, Dibiase with the fistdrops as I wonder why they never teamed up Tugboat with Ricky Steamboat at the time? DID THEY HATE MONEY? Back to the floor and Tugboat sends Dibiase to the post this time as the heat machine thinks this is very exciting. Back in the ring, Tugboat works him over in the corner, but turns around to yell at the ref and Dibiase hooks him in the Million Dollar Dream. So Tugboat runs him into the corner to break, but misses a charge and gets pinned at 6:40. And Dibiase immediately books it to the back, looking like he couldn’t wait to be anywhere else. ½*
The Legion of Doom & British Bulldog v. Power & Glory & Warlord
And we finish with this six-man, probably too late to redeem this awful tape at this point. Roma slugs away on Hawk, and then dodges a clothesline and puts the boots to him in the corner. Roma bails to the floor and back in with a standing dropkick, but Hawk shakes him off and gets a neckbreaker. Over to Animal, who has the showdown with the Warlord we’ve all been waiting to see again. Animal puts him down with a clothesline, but Hercules comes in and puts Animal down with shoulderblocks. Bulldog comes in and immediately gets caught with a cheapshot, and the heels go to work on him. Bulldog tries the powerslam on Warlord, but Roma trips him up and Warlord falls on top for two. Warlord with the full nelson, but Bulldog powers out of it and it’s BREAKING LOOSE IN TULSA for a double DQ at 7:10. Wow what a finish to the tape. ½*
I guess there’s a THIRD volume of this series I still need to review as well. So look out for that, I guess. As for this one, do not look out for it, although it you want to watch it someone posted it to Facebook:
