What the World Was Watching: WWF Superstars – March 3, 1990

Gene Okerlund’s Update segment replays WWF President Jack Tunney’s announcement that the main event of WrestleMania VI will be title-for-title.  Also replayed are the promos from Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior on Superstars.

What the World Was Watching: WWF The Main Event – February 23, 1990

Vince McMahon and Jesse Ventura do commentary and they are live from Detroit, Michigan.  According to thehistoryofwwe.com, the show drew a crowd of 21,000 fans.  The broadcast drew a rating of 12.8 (roughly 20.9 million viewers), an increase from the previous year’s telecast that pulled a 11.6 rating (19.9 million viewers) when the show was headlined by the Mega Powers facing the Twin Towers.

Gene Okerlund interviews Randy Savage and Sensational Sherri.  Savage says that he is happy that Mike Tyson pulled out as the referee because he found out that Tyson’s great grandmother is a Hulkamaniac so that made him biased.  Savage warns Buster Douglas to call it down the middle or royal authority will rain down on him.  Sherri closes by vowing that Hulk Hogan is not going to go into WrestleMania VI as world champion.

Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan are hosting tonight’s broadcast.  Heenan announces that Mike Tyson will not referee the WWF title match between Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage on The Main Event.  Monsoon follows up by saying that Buster Douglas will take Tyson’s place.  Heenan is discouraged by this news because he hoped to referee the bout.

As per usual, Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan are in the studio hosting this evening’s show.  Heenan says that the Colossal Connection will be interested in seeing Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior team up tonight.  Monsoon says that Tugboat, who will appear on this show, is a “strange individual” who looks like he came from the Popeye cartoons, a great endorsement of the gimmick.

What the World Was Watching: WWF Royal Rumble 1990

Tony Schiavone and Jesse Ventura are in the booth and they are live from Orlando, Florida.  According to thehistoryofwwe.com, this show drew a sellout crowd of 16,000 fans.  It also drew a buyrate of 2.0 (an estimated 260,000 buys), an increase from the 1.5 number the Rumble did the previous year.  This would also be the last pay-per-view that Schiavone would call for the WWF.
