Happy Saturday Everyone!

I reviewed a bad WWF/E show last week so let’s redress the balance by reviewing a better one in the form of No Way Out 2000. The big selling point for this show is that Cactus Jack is putting his career on the line in a Hell in a Cell match with WWF Champion Triple H. Aside from that, we’ve got Rock putting his WrestleMania 2000 Title shot on the line against The Big Show whilst European Champ Kurt Angle tries to win the WWF Intercontinental Title from Chris Jericho in order to become the third Euro-Continental Champion in company history.

Vince McMahon apparently credited this as the only buy rate Mick Foley ever drew, which seems a bit unfair when you consider how Foley played his part in more than one major pay per view match during the WWF’s hot streak.

I watched a terrible WWF show last week, so I thought I’d redress the balance by watching a GOOD WWF show this week, in the form of Royal Rumble 1992. For those not familiar with the backstory, Undertaker and Hulk Hogan had a dodgy finish in a Title match that even saw WWF President Jack Tunney take a bump as part of the circus. Thus, the belt has been held up and the winner of the Royal Rumble will win be declared Champion.

Also on the undercard we’ve got Roddy Piper going for the Intercontinental Title against The Mountie, along with The Natural Disasters trying to win the Tag Team Titles from The Road Warriors. Ric Flair is very much the MVP of this show though. I’ve said it before that if the 1953 FA Cup Final is the “Matthews Final” then the 1992 Royal Rumble is the “Flair Rumble”.

This week and next week we’re going to be covering “one match shows”, which are wrestling events that tend to be remembered for one match and one match only, sometimes even by design. This week we’ve got WWF Armageddon 2000, and next week we’ve got a WCW show that can also wear the moniker.

The one match in this instance is a big six man Hell in a Cell match, which means some of the under card is going to be left a little thin. Still, hopefully the undercard isn’t too much of a slog.

Today we’ve got some classic NXT for you, as we look at Takeover London from way back in 2015. NXT from this period was something I watched all of the time and really enjoyed, even though my interest in the main roster had all but eroded by this stage. It helped that NXT usually had great matches and characters you could actually care about.

I didn’t get to go to this one, for reasons I don’t even remember, although I did eventually get to see NXT live a few times back when I really enjoyed it.

I’ve been meaning to give this one a review for a while as I don’t think I’ve ever properly sat down to watch any of it outside of the Main Event, and that’s a lot of fun so hopefully the rest of the card will be good also!

This show came about because Vince McMahon was doing his usual Cyril Sneer act of helping himself whilst not hurting the competition by running a pay per view directly opposite Starrcade. He also strong armed a bunch of pay per view providers to not show Starrcade, even though JCP were happy to move their show to a different timeslot in order to accommodate him.

Stunts like this are why I’m glad a company like AEW exists because if Vince had gotten his way then I think all other wrestling companies would be annihilated by now and he’d just be training bodybuilders and failed sports stars at the Performance Centre.

The event ended up being a success so they kept it around, although its importance has wavered a lot in recent years and it’s probably the weakest of the “Big Four” pay per view events, even though the elimination match concept can be fun.

Decided to review some classic WWF over on WWE Network and went with this one as the Main Event of a big Tag Team Battle Royal sounded intriguing and the show itself only runs just under an hour, so it should hopefully be a breeze to watch.

We haven’t got the full card here, so either they didn’t film it all or they’ve cut it out of the Network version for various reasons. It says on the WWE Network that this show happened at Sam Houston Coliseum, but I think it was actually in a different venue called The Summit if Cagematch.net is anything to go by. Just WWE Network being WWE Network I guess (unless they change it between me writing this review and posting it).

I remember this show being good so I’ve decided to watch it to see if it holds up. Big matches are a Fatal Four Way for the Smackdown Title, whilst Ken Kennedy wrestles The Undertaker and Chavo Guerrero Jr wrestles Rey Mysterio Jr on the under card.

If you weren’t around at the time, Scott Keith gave the X-Pac Vs Chris Jericho match on this show ****1/4 back in the day and caught a lot of flak for it. I don’t really have much memory of it so I thought I’d watch the show and see how it holds up, especially as the Six Pack Challenge Main Event for the WWF Title is really good.

There’s also a notable dog of a bout (pun intended) on the under card that might provide some laughs.

This was Vince Russo’s last pay per view for the WWF I believe, as by the time No Mercy came along he was in WCW. Pour one out for Vinny Ru I guess…

We’ll bring our trip down memory lane of WWF/E running shows in the UK to an end with this show, which happened at the tail end of the Attitude Era and just before the all-time terrible InVasion angle. We’ve got Regal Vs Jericho and Benoit Vs Angle on this one, so at least two of the matches can be budgeted in for being good if nothing else.

I’ve reviewed the Opener and Main Event of this show already and the rest of the show has a couple of matches that I remember being good, so let’s do a full review of it. 2003 was a rough year for the WWE both creatively and financially, as they produced a number of lousy shows with the ratings and buy rates continuing to drop off from the peak of the Attitude Era two years prior.

This show was originally built around a Goldberg Vs Triple H singles match, but then Triple H got injured and they decided to pile six guys into the Elimination Chamber in hope of popping a buy rate and taking the strain off Triple H so that he didn’t have to carry Goldberg in a singles outing. Elsewhere we’ve got Brock Lesnar taking on Kurt Angle and the freshly re-monstered Kane against Rob Van Dam.

WWE are in Cardiff this weekend, so I decided to head back to another show they ran in the UK during the autumn in the form of Rebellion 99. Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara didn’t go on this trip and actually used it as a chance to negotiate with WCW whilst Vince McMahon was over in England. Also a notable storyline with Stephanie McMahon started on this show as well.

From memory there is some good wrestling on this one, although the show is also mostly typical Attitude Era stuff. I seem to recall that the match between Kane and Big Show over delivers, but we’ll see if I’m remembering that right or not.

I’ve already reviewed the Opener and Main Event of this show before, so I thought I might as well finish reviewing it seeing as we’re in August and I remember this show being fun.

The WWF was of course in the midst of a hugely successful run during this time period, with The Rock riding high as WWF Champ whilst The Hardyz, Dudleyz and E+C were tearing it up in the tag ranks. The two big matches on this show are The Rock defending the WWF Title against Triple H and Kurt Angle in a Triple Threat match, whilst the tag team division goes to war in a TLC match.

I decided to watch this one today as it not only happened 27 years ago to the day, but I was also interested to watch the Jeff Jarrett Vs Shawn Michaels match again as it’s famously very highly rated. The Main Event here is Diesel Vs Sid in a Lumberjack match, but hopefully the rest of the card is good enough to make up for that.
