AAA Verano de Escandalo Night Two Review – 08.01.26

AAA’s Verano de Escandalo is on Youtube this evening from Arena San Marcos in Aguascalientes, Mexico. The American announcing team for tonight’s show include Corey Graves, John Bradshaw Layfield, and AAA GM Rey Mysterio. There are three immense matches on tonight’s card, so let’s watch some lucha!

Then, Now, Forever…..TOGETHER

We open with a highlights package of last week‘s big main event that saw Los Perros del Mal take on AAA Mega Champion Dominik Mysterio and El Grande Americano. Los Perros were victorious when Mysterio walked out on his TripleMania opponent and aligned himself with El Ojo. Post-match Mysterio asked everyone what they expected from the King of the Luchadores because he’s the one who calls all the shots around AAA.

Arrivals: AAA Cruiserweight Champion Rey Fenix and his opponent tonight, Mini Vikingo. Galeno and El Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr. seem very excited for their tag match this evening.

AAA Latin American Championship Qualifier: La Parka vs Lince Dorado vs Mecha Wolf

The winner here will join El Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr. in the Fatal Four-way for the Latin American Championship at TripleMania, with two more slots to be decided in the coming weeks. Parka wants to dance a bit which apparently makes Mecha and Dorado a bit grumpy, so they start beating on Parka together. They whip Parka to a corner but then cannot decide who should wade in to do more damage. Dorado decides to charge and Parka dumps him over the top rope to the floor before slipping Mecha’s charge. Parka sends Mecha to the floor with a reverse thrust and then catches a jumping Dorado with a knee to the gentleman’s area. Parka acrobatically slips a Dorado charge before yanking him into a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Parka dropkicks Dorado to the floor but Mecha prevents a tope attempt. Dorado charges again and gets dumped…again….before Parka charges out for a tope. Mecha and Dorado catch Parka and drive him face first into the ring post. Dorado prevents Mecha from re-entering and then mashes Parka with a double boot while upside down on a top turnbuckle.

Dorado snaps off an armdrag on Parka and then nails Mecha with a tope suicida. Dorado ascends and drops Parka with a rana that gets two. Mecha charges in but eats an immediate back elbow and enziguri from Dorado. Mecha slips a Dorado charge and nails him with a back body drop. Mecha goes into rampage mode and takes out Parka and Dorado with topes before catching a returning Dorado with a tornado DDT. Mecha covers and gets a LONG two. Mecha and Dorado slug it out and Dorado wins the skirmish with a poison rana. They clothesline each other down and Parka sneaks in to hit a double stunner. Parka hits a series of running uppercuts and then yanks Mecha into a snap powerslam. Dorado tries to break it up with a senton but Parka senses him coming and Dorado only ends up crushing Mecha. Parka hits a double flapjack and nips up before crushing both opponents with a moonsault to the floor. Dorado sneaks in a roll-up on Parka for two when they return, but Parka rises up with a knee strike. Dorado shakes that off and yanks Parka into a backstabber. Mecha breaks up the cover at two.

Dorado fires Mecha to a corner but runs directly into a Mecha back elbow. Mecha sits on a top turnbuckle and Dorado climbs up to start slugging it out with him. Mecha wins the skirmish and yanks Dorado up for an avalanche brainbuster. (HOLY CRAP!) that gets two as Parka breaks things up. Mecha and Parka start slugging it out and Parka ends up launching a charging Mecha into a facebuster. Parka hits a Blue Thunder Bomb and covers Mecha for two. Dorado ascends but gets crotched as Parka fires Mecha into the ropes. Parka yanks up Mecha and then pulls Dorado on top to carry both guys. Dorado slips off and nails Parka with a stunner causing him to hit a crucifix driver on Mecha. Dorado and Mecha hit each other with high boots and everyone is down. Dorado and Mecha roll to the apron and start kicking each other before Dorado ranas Mecha to the floor. Dorado ascends and crushes Parka with a Shooting Star Press that gets two.

Dorado ascends again and Mecha rises up to fire BLUE MIST into Dorado’s eyes. Parka flies up and crushes Dorado with a Spanish Fly. As Parka covers, he senses Mecha flying in and moves out of the way to duck the headbutt that ends up bashing Dorado. Parka nails Mecha with a half-and-half suplex before dropping Dorado off the apron. Parka overhead tosses a charging Mecha into a corner before crushing Dorado with a tope suicida. Parka hits Mecha with a splash and then hits the Bonebreaker to finish things.

I appreciate Dorado holding these things together as a player-coach. Everything stays within the ringside area and the agenting works super-well. I thought Mecha had his best match in awhile and Dorado did his normal stuff. La Parka is the biggest name in this match and will be a solid competitor at the four way at TripleMania. A fun and entertaining opener. 3.5*

Winner – La Parka (Bonebreaker on Mecha Wolf)

Post-match sees a victorious Parka bring in a kid dressed as him for some more dancing.

Here’s Los Perros del Mal backstage and Daga mentions that since they’ve arrived they’ve become the locker room’s worst nightmare. Daga promises they set the rules and next week the legacy will continue to grow. God forgives, and Los Perros do not.

Dinamico and Drago vs Galeno and El Hijo Del Dr. Wagner Jr.

It’s DW3 and Dinamico to start. Dinamico tries to truck DW3 to no effect and eats a slap in response. Dinamico fires off a reverse thrust kick and dropkicks DW3 in the knee as Drago grabs a blind tag. DW3 shakes off their double-team efforts and blasts Dinamico down with a huge forearm. DW3 crushes Dinamico with a senton and lofts a charging Drago into a bodyslam. Galeno tags in as DW3 lariats Dinamico to the floor. Galeno runs halfway around the ring to send Dinamico flying with a shoulder tackle. Galeno re-enters and casually tosses Drago halfway across the ring to the Wagner team corner. Galeno fires off a series of clotheslines before DW3 tags in. Galeno tosses a charging DW3 over his shoulders to dropkick a prone Drago but Dinamico opts to keep things going by breaking up the cover. Galeno tags back in and he assists DW3 in a splash from Galeno’s shoulders. Galeno yanks Drago into the Galeno Special and that finishes things.

Tirantes picked the right match to ref on tonight’s card because this thing was a formality. I think they’re positioning the brothers in such a way that if neither one captures the Latin American championship at TripleMania to be then able to go after the War Raiders (assuming that they hold on to the belts for awhile). I’m just surmising here, I don’t know that to be a fact. Obviously, Galeno still has to qualify for the four-way, as well. So we’ll see. This was just your straight “hoss team squashes little guys” type of thing and after all these years, the formula still works. 2.5*

Winners – Galeno/DW3 (Galeno Special on Drago)

It’s time for Rey Mysterio’s Weekly Chat With The Press, and he says it’s been a great week and he’ll only take a few questions. Mysterio is concerned by his son’s new alignment with El Ojo but it does make some sense in that Dorian Roldan and Dominik are two failsons who hate their parents. Mysterio promises to not back down from the threats that were levied against him next week by Roldan and Omos. Mysterio promotes the main event and that wraps up Rey Mysterio’s Weekly Chat With The Press.

AAA World Cruiserweight Championship: Rey Fenix (C) vs Mini Vikingo

Jesus Zuniga, the awesome ring announcer for AAA, handles the intros and we’re off. There’s a handshake to start as Graves points out that Fenix has been a professional wrestler longer than Vikingo has been alive. There’s some acrobatics to start and Fenix pushes Vikingo down for a quick two. There’s some more acrobatics to a standoff. Vikingo catches a superkick attempt and gently places Fenix’s boot back on the canvas. Vikingo grins and snaps off a couple of kicks but Fenix has had enough and blasts Vikingo with a superkick before covering and getting two.

Fenix misses a charge and Vikingo springs up for a torneo that gets two. Vikingo hits three knee strikes in a row and then climbs over Fenix for a sunset flip that gets two. Vikingo snaps off another twisting rana and Fenix bails to the floor. Vikingo charges and meets a Fenix kaman giri. Fenix ascends and crushes Vikingo with a frog splash that gets two. Fenix yanks Vikingo onto his shoulders but when he reaches tres in his count Vikingo fires Fenix over in a crucifix driver. Vikingo’s cover gets two. Fenix kicks a charging Vikingo in the head and ascends for a ropewalk drive-by kick. Fenix once again yanks Vikingo onto his shoulders and this time hits the Fenix Driver for two.

Fenix fires off some Yes kicks and the last one catches Vikingo dead in the face. Vikingo pulls a standing Spanish Fly out of nowhere and covers Fenix for two. A slap fight breaks out and then they start firing bombs at each other. Fenix drops Vikingo and then yanks him up for more punishment. Fenix misses a Meteora and eats a Vikingo rana in response. Vikingo covers and gets two. Vikingo ascends and hits a frog splash for two. Vikingo starts assaulting Fenix in a corner but Fenix catches him with a Rolling Thunder cutter that gets two.

Fenix fires off a couple of thrust kicks and they both ascend. Vikingo hits a top rope Spanish Fly and can only get two. Vikingo ascends again and misses a Phoenix Splash. Fenix rises and mounts Vikingo in a corner before pulling Vikingo onto his shoulders. Vikingo slips the Muscle Buster attempt and rolls up Fenix for two. Fenix mashes Vikingo with a Shining Wizard and gets ONE. Fenix pulls Vikingo up and finishes things with the Mexican Muscle Buster.

Old versus young, the crafty vet champion against the very young upstart challenger. The story basically writes itself and they played the roles perfectly here. Vikingo showed some new facets of his game with some more effective striking, and Fenix had to hold off the very game challenger. I liked this one a bunch. 4*

Winner AND STILL AAA World Cruiserweight Champion – Rey Fenix (Mexican Muscle Buster)

Post-match sees another handshake prior to Vikingo exiting to allow the champ to celebrate. The credits roll and here’s Vikingo getting a few words in his ear from Dorian Roldan backstage. OOOOHHHH INTRIGUING

Another breezy and fun effort tonight. The triple threat was a solid way to open the show, the Wagner Dynasty squash was a fun middle section, and the Cruiserweight championship was a hell of a battle in the main event. No complaints, although there were zero women mentioned or seen on this show tonight which must mean tag team wrestling is BACK BABY. No, but get the women on every week, please. Fun show, go watch it.
