AAA Verano De Escandalo Night One Review – 07.25.26

AAA’s Verano de Escandalo is on Youtube this evening from Arena San Marcos in Aguascalientes, Mexico. The American announcing team for tonight’s show include Corey Graves, John Bradshaw Layfield, and AAA GM Rey Mysterio. There are two huge matches on tonight’s card, so let’s watch some lucha!

Then, Now, Forever…TOGETHER

Arrivals include AAA Mixed Tag Team Champions Lola Vice and Mr. Iguana followed by their challengers La Hiedra and Laredo Kid. Here’s AAA GM Rey Mysterio, AAA Mega Champion Dominik Mysterio and El Grande Americano arriving separately before an immense main event.

Here’s Rey Mysterio out with Adrian Mendoza joining the announce team for translations. Mysterio welcomes everyone to the show and tonight begins three straight weeks of incredible events. Mysterio mentions his history in Aguascalientes and feels a huge amount of pride with how much the crowd appreciates lucha libre. Mysterio says he’s working very hard behind the scenes to bring lucha to the global stage and after everything that has happened lately he wanted to come out and give some good news.

Here’s El Ojo out with Dorian Roldan leading Omos down to the ring. Roldan politely asks the crowd to quiet down and then tells Mysterio that his time is up regarding a decision around the Latin American Championship. Roldan says that it’s very unfair that Omos has to compete in a triple threat qualifying match and wants to give Mysterio a chance to reconsider just giving Omos the title. Mysterio says he told Roldan a couple of weeks ago that people have always tried to threaten and intimidate him, and Roldan assures him it’s not a threat, it’s a choice. Roldan promises to unleash Omos in a terrible way should Mysterio not cave, and Mysterio says the answer is still no. Roldan says Mysterio has made his choice and now will face the consequences. Omos looms over Mysterio but apparently the retribution will happen later as Roldan backs Omos slowly away.

Here’s Dominik Mysterio greeting El Grande Americano and reminding him about how dangerous Los Perros del Mal are. EGA just wants to get through this tonight so they can all just move on to Triplemania. EGA wants a verbal assurance that Mysterio is with him and Mysterio reminds him he has just as much at stake as EGA does. Mysterio says he’s ready to go and there’s an awkward fistbump. Here’s original Los Perros del Mal member Damian 666 in to remind EGA that few are chosen.

AAA Mixed Tag Team Championship: Mr. Iguana and Lola Vice (C) vs La Hiedra and Laredo Kid

As always, Mr. Iguana is accompanied by La Yesca. It’s Iguana and Laredo to start and they grapple to start. Iguana and Laredo try some covers and then nip up to each other. Laredo slaps Iguana who fires up with an immediate armbar in response. Laredo rolls Iguana into a cover and gets two. Hiedra gets a tag and goes nose to nose with Iguana before Vice breaks it up with some slaps. Vice hits a springboard armdrag and then slaps on an armbar. Hiedra sneaks out of it and they pop each other with rights. Vice drives a knee in along the ropes but Hiedra fires up with some bodyslams. Vice hits her low martial arts kicks and then does the same to a charging Laredo. Vice hits a Hip Attack on both Hiedra and Laredo. Vice runs the apron and mashes Laredo with a seated senton, but Hiedra flies in with a stunner on Vice. Hiedra drags Vice in and mounts her in a corner. Hiedra hits a dropkick to Vice’s mid-section and covers her for two. Hiedra drags Vice by her hair to the middle of the ring and slaps on a rear chinlock. They exchange rights and Hiedra lariats Vice in a corner. Vice flies out with a superkick and then drops Hiedra with a Saito suplex. Iguana and Laredo get tags and Iguana hits a rana followed by a diving headbutt. Iguana hits a crucifix driver and gets two.

Laredo fires up with a palm strike and then crushes Iguana in a corner with a flying forearm. Laredo hits a Michinoku Driver and ascends for a 450 splash that gets…what looked like three but apparently wasn’t. (Replay here shows the ref take a long beat between the one and two count and then a much shorter beat before counting three. This was a botch, but it’s whatever.) Laredo yanks Iguana up for some more kicking and punching but Iguana snaps off a DDT in response. Vice and Hiedra get tags and Vice immediately fires off spinning kicks. Hiedra ends that flurry with a headbutt but Vice rolls through a body slam attempt and gets two. Hiedra yanks Vice into a Flatliner that gets two. Hiedra gets another roll up for two but Vice rises for an immediate roundhouse kick that gets two as Laredo makes the save. Iguana flies in and dumps Laredo to the floor. Iguana nails Laredo with a rana but Laredo springs up and drives Iguana into the ring steps. Back in the ring Vice gets an O’Connor Roll for two and then nails Laredo with a backfist. Hiedra sneaks in and nails Vice with Jaded and that ends things.

I thought there might be a title change here and I got one right for once. Hiedra has been chasing these titles for awhile now and finally got her teacher and mentor Laredo on board to go after them and subsequently win them. This was good for the most part but the weird ref thing in the middle kind of took some of the starch out of it. 3*

Here’s Rey Mysterio having a quick sit-down with some journalists. Rey has some good news that he was going to deliver before being interrupted by Dorian Roldan. Mysterio then announces Penta will be in Torreon on August 15th before talking about being at ComicCon with Mr. Iguana where they announced AAA figures coming from Mattel. Mysterio leaves to rejoin commentary.

Los Perros del Mal (Daga and Angel Garza) vs El Grande Americano and AAA Mega Champion Dominik Mysterio

It’s Daga and Mysterio to start and Mysterio starts with some rights. There’s some standing switches and Daga yanks Mysterio down by his hair. Daga yanks Mysterio up for a slam and then lines him up for a series of corner chops. Daga eats a dropkick and Mysterio tags in EGA. Mysterio and EGA combine on a trip-elbow drop and Mysterio exits. Daga fires up with a right but EGA dislikes that and tosses Daga to a corner to pummel him. Daga goes to the eyes and then whales away with fists. EGA hits an armdrag and a running boot to Daga’s chest. EGA covers and gets two.

EGA goes to a top turnbuckle and Garza shakes the ropes so much that EGA slips down and crotches himself. Daga yanks EGA up and Garza tags in. Garza hits a roundhouse kick and covers EGA for two. Garza pounds on EGA from above and then waffles him with a kick to the ribs. Garza whips EGA into a corner and mounts him for a bunch of right hands. EGA fires up and they slug it out. EGA punches Garza down but when he goes to charge Daga grabs him by the foot to prevent it. Garza uses this to fly in but EGA slips away and tags in Mysterio. Mysterio charges in and mashes Garza with an elbow and a lariat. Garza begs off and pops Mysterio with a huge uppercut. Daga gets a blind tag as Mysterio hits a sunset flip on Garza. Mysterio protects himself from Garza as Daga crushes him from behind with a shotgun dropkick. Daga covers and gets one.

Daga chops Mysterio along the ropes and then plants him with a dropkick. Daga covers and gets two. Garza tags in and they put the boots to Mysterio in their corner. Garza bullies Mysterio as EGA charges over to try to help. Garza and Daga crush Mysterio and then Garza drags him in for a two count. Garza bullies Mysterio along the ropes before mounting him on a top turnbuckle. Mysterio snaps off a tornado DDT and EGA and Daga gets tags. EGA runs wild on both Perros before ascending and hitting both with a double Blockbuster. EGA covers Daga and gets two.

EGA tags in Mysterio and they work Daga over in their corner. Mysterio goes right into the Three Amigos and then tags in EGA for the third one. EGA covers Daga and gets two. EGA bites Daga’s forehead and then nails him with a right. EGA mounts Daga on a top turnbuckle and hits a superplex. Mysterio follows with a frog splash but EGA gets driven back by Angel on to the pile as the ref counts two. Mysterio dropkicks Daga from behind and he lands on the second rope but Mysterio takes too long and Daga prevents the 619 with a lariat. EGA and Garza get tags. EGA hits a running kick but Garza goes to the eyes in response. Garza runs into an EGA back elbow and then EGA snaps off a Dragon Screw when Daga tries to come in. EGA drives Garza into the referee who was checking on Daga on the floor. Mysterio hits the 619 and EGA follows with a diving headbutt on Garza but obviously there is no ref to count. Mysterio gives EGA something to load in his mask and here’s the rest of Los Perros out to kick the crap out of Mysterio. Garza catches EGA with a Gory Special but by the time the ref gets back in EGA manages to kick out at two. Here’s Rayo and Bravo Americano out with kendo sticks to take on Nima and Berto, but that doesn’t go super well for them. Bravo climbs a light pole and dives a VERY long way on all three guys. EGA yanks Garza up for a sideslam that gets two.

Here’s Karmen Petrovic heading down the aisle as Nima chokeslams both Americanos through the announce desk. EGA flies out to take out Nima with a headbutt. EGA flies back in and eats a knee lift by Angel. Angel hits a sit-out powerbomb and gets two. Daga tags in and Garza dropkicks EGA into a Daga German which gets two. Daga kind of loses it and starts whaling on EGA but EGA shakes that off and starts firing rights. EGA clotheslines both Perros down and wants a tag but Mysterio pulls his hand away and backs down the steps. Mysterio saunters slowly back up the ramp and Daga mashes EGA from behind with a kick. Garza pounds away and then drives EGA into a turnbuckle. Garza holds EGA prone and Daga hits a double stomp to end things.

They really went for a spectacle here and I’m not sure it got there. Angel is a terrific wrestler and probably the best out of these four overall but the emphasis was fully on the Dom-EGA story by the end so some of the heel work gets lost. Los Perros are going to be a fun faction to watch in terms of them being able to wreck stuff with numbers. EGA now has full motivation for TripleMania and the outcome of the post-match stuff was interesting to me. 3.5*

Winners – Los Perros del Mal (Daga double-stomp on EGA)

Post-match sees Los Perros celebrate over a fallen EGA as highlights play. Mysterio continues up the ramp and suddenly he’s joined by Dorian Roldan and Omos. Handshakes all around indicate that Mysterio is now aligned with El Ojo. The credits roll and we’re out.

This was fine for an opening night of VdE, so I’ll take it. There was a title change with the mixed belts, and we finally got the big move to get things aligned storyline-wise for Triplemania with the Mega title. I think Roldan making the move to acquire an interest in the Mega title after losing access to Vikingo’s Latin American title makes sense as he has his skirmish with Rey Mysterio brewing. A solid episode tonight overall but nothing earth-shattering with the in-ring stuff.
