The Boys – Season 4 Discussion
By Scott Keith on 15 June 2024
OK, so I ran through the first 3 episodes of the Boys last night, and I have thoughts! Not like DEEP THOUGHTS WITH THE DEEP kind of thoughts, but thoughts. Spoilers AHOY!
Funny how the alt-right nutbars are suddenly realizing that the show was making fun of them the whole time and they don’t like it. The TruthCon episode and Frenchie going very very gay for Colin stick out as very deliberate middle fingers to them.
Poor Ryan. This kid has no chance. When he was in tears and Homelander comforted him by telling him “It’s OK, you’ll get lots of chances at solo saves” and the poor kid has this look on his face like “WTF did I sign up for?”. And then the poor kid tries to bond with Butcher and almost ends up getting drugged by cookies. Somehow the show plays this off as Butcher trying to be noble. I dunno man.
I know where the Black Noir thing went in the comics but this doesn’t seem to be that. However, it might still be, since they’ve made sure that we haven’t seen his face yet and it would be a pretty big reveal if it goes the same way. But yeah, more Black Noir acting completely out of character and trying to comprehend his own backstory, PLEASE.
The Deep has quietly become one of the best characters on the show, with Chace Crawford having to do some heavy lifting of someone having to play a character that’s extremely dumb and still be sympathetic somehow. Also the “Is that a Bloomin’ Onion from Outback?” scene was amazing. I’ll be sad if Sage’s home lobotomy is permanent because she’s been getting all the best lines and cutting everyone down more efficiently than Homelander’s lasers.
The pinkeye scene was double ick because first the scene happened (which someone had to THINK UP I remind you) and then it was clarified right away what’s Splinter’s powers were and you realized that it wasn’t just people who looked kinda similar.
The wholesome Vought on Ice teasers on social media sure ended up a lot darker in practice, like most things on this show.
WTF did Erin Moriarty do to her face in between seasons?
Firecracker feels like they really wanted to keep Stormfront around as a right wing surrogate and needed a replacement, coming off as a cross between Laura Loomer and Alex Jones. Also I laughed pretty hard at her showing off her “powers” and then lamely clarifying that she’s also really strong and that’s an important part of it. She does have a pretty solid beef with Starlight, though.
Homelander and mirrors, man. That’s why I think the Noir plot is going exactly where I think it’s going.
That’s what I’ve got, have at it if you’re watching along!
