History of “The Intercontinental Title”

By Scott Keith on 8 May 2017

Hi Scott,

Here’s a weird question so sorry in advance: Where did WWE come up with the name "Intercontinental Title"?

Other regional titles make sense cause you’re the champion of that region. And, of course, a World or "Heavyweight" title makes sense. But what is where did they come up with the name, "Intercontinental"? It seems like such a nebulous term.

Because it was supposed to be a step up from the North American title that it replaced, so rather than one continent it’s an intercontinental title. They actually did a fake match where Pat Patterson unified the title with the fake South American champ to really hammer that point home.
