Crowd chants in original ECW on tv

I’m currently watching the ECW Hardcore TVs on the network. When they were originally aired in syndication how did they get away with not having to censor the obviously obscene chants from the crowd?

​I can’t speak for the actual TV show experience because I really only ever saw the shows in RF Video form through tape trading, but I imagine that the crowd chants were considered background noise as long as the announcer didn’t call attention to them. ​
