WrestleMania cards in the pre-WrestleMania era

By Scott Keith on 30 April 2016

HeyScott,

Was wondering how you and your readers might book WrestleMania’s had they existed say 1975-1985. I came of age as a fan in 1989 so I missed most of the earlier stuff. What would the money WM matches have been in the Sammartino/Morales/Backlund eras?

For Bruno it would have been the Shea Stadium cage match with Larry. Either that or the match where he came back from a broken neck against Stan Hansen.

Morales probably wouldn’t have worked as a headliner on a show like Wrestlemania, because he was a really regional attraction based on the Northeast. He was a solid draw but I don’t even remember any of his big feuds, to be honest.

For Backlund, it would be him winning the World title from Superstar, although it would have been a bigger buildup and a longer reign for Graham to get there. You could also make a case for the Snuka cage match as well as a second one.
