Patriot vs Bret

I just re-watched the match from Ground Zero. The promo beforehand highlights The Patriot's achievements in Japan, and throughout the match McMahon refers to him as Del Wilkes. Were there bigger plans for The Patriot beyond this match in 1997? Or was he lost to the cause after Montreal?
They liked him just fine, but Wilkes tore the shit out of his triceps muscle and he was basically done after Montreal. He was a good worker and probably could have stuck around for a long time afterwards in the Duggan role.
