WE HAVE ARRIVED.
Taped from Ft. Wayne, IN, on 10.21.91, which would likely make this one of the most momentous fourth-week episodes of any taping I can recall.
Your hosts are Vince McMahon, Roddy Piper & Randy Savage
Last week: Undertaker pops out of a casket and destroys Hulk Hogan, while Ric Flair’s belt is suddenly digitized due to legal action from WCW.
El Matador v. Bob Smedly
Tito sends Smedly to the floor with his matadoring skills and backdrops him to set up a kneelift. And the NECK PUNCH OF DOOM finishes at 1:20. Honestly he should have stuck with the figure-four and flying forearm combo. You ever see a bull escape a figure-four before? Case closed.
WWF Intercontinental title: Bret Hart v. Big Bully Busick
Last TV appearance for the Bully here, although he did some house shows for a couple of weeks after this was taped. Bully gets an abdominal stretch and puts Bret down with a clothesline, but Bret comes back with an atomic drop and backbreaker to set up the middle rope elbow. Sharpshooter finishes at 2:40 as Bully was basically treated like a job guy here.
Meanwhile, Repo Man breaks into a garage because a lady is 3 days late on her car payment. I believe Linda McMahon is currently using that policy for student loan debts.
Texas Tornado v. Greg Green
Vince hypes up the WBF Magazine issue out this month, featuring “Bodybuilding Myths Exposed”. Myth #1: People care about bodybuilding PPVs. BUSTED! Tornado punch finishes at 1:00 as they likely couldn’t depend on Kerry to go longer than that. He was completely crashing out at this point.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth pops up again and pleads for Jack Tunney to reinstate her husband.
Skinner v. Ben Jordon
Skinner slugs away in the corner and puts him down with a boot before dropping him on the top rope. Gator Drop finishes at 1:10.
Hulk Hogan joins Mean Gene to clarify that he fears no Undertaker, and the yellow of his shirt stands for belief in the prayers and vitamins and will light the valley of death. Also the red stands for immortality. Well the universe sure called his bluff on that one.
SURVIVOR SERIES REPORT! WITH MEAN GENE!
Gene wonders if we’re gonna get a resolution to the Randy Savage situation by the end of the show, and the LOD discuss teeth and whose teeth they will be kicking in at the show. Oh also, Ric Flair introduces his new Executive Consultant: MR. PERFECT! Man that’s a pretty offhand way to switch out Bobby Heenan. That should have been a bigger deal. Also Jim Neidhart is out and Gene has heard rumors that Sgt. Slaughter might take his place? Huge if true.
Jake Roberts v. Bob Werner
Roddy keeps advising Macho to stay in his seat and let it go, but Randy is restless. Jake with a short clothesline and he finishes quick with the DDT at 0:40. Jake: “Hey you with the orange hat up there!” Macho: “HE’S TALKING ABOUT ME!” Jake talks about envying Savage’s accomplishments over the years, but now Savage has gone soft hiding behind his wife’s skirt. So Savage goes to get a closer look while Jake talks shit about him, but a ref grabs his foot to keep him from getting in the ring, and Jake lays him out and sends him into the post. In the ring, Jake ties him up in the ropes and stomps on the knee to keep him down, and then unleashes the KING COBRA, as the snake bites him on the arm and GNAWS ON THE ARM while we get the big red “Censored” X on the screen to really sell it. Finally Roddy Piper runs down to save him and Elizabeth comes down and she’s shrieking in horror while Macho’s arm is bloody and he’s desperately throwing punches while suffering from snake venom. There’s some fat little kid literally crying at ringside! Finally the officials pull Savage out of there and we wrap it up for the week with an all-timer, probably one of the greatest angles of the year.
Holy crap what an angle to send it to Survivor Series. Guess I gotta track down the Survivor Series Showdown next. PAGING RICHARD!
