The SmarK Rant for WCW Worldwide – 08.10.91

Originally written 06.10.26

Taped from Salisbury, MD on 07.15.91

Your hosts are Tony Schiavone & Magnum TA

Dustin Rhodes v. Bubba Monroe

If I didn’t know what that jobber’s name was, I would 100% guess “Bubba Monroe”. Dustin hits him with a corner clothesline and a backdrop and he uses FLIP FLOP AND FLY. Sounds like an AEW main event, AM I RIGHT FELLAS? Aren’t they LAME? Dustin works the arm on the mat and finishes with the bulldog at 2:24.

Johnny B. Badd v. Scott Sandlin

We get an inset from Steve Austin, and he does a weird promo where he accuses Badd of putting the moves on Lady Blossom. Where did THAT come from? Add that to the list of angles in 1991 WCW where they introduced and dropped them cold, I guess. Top rope sunset flip gets one and Johnny drops an elbow and puts the boots to him. Badd with the high knee and the knockout punch finishes at 2:11.

And with that, it’s time for the WCW TOP 10!

DISCLAIMER REGARDING WCW TOP 10 COIN™

WCW Top 10 Coin™ is a decentralized cryptocurrency whose value is backed entirely by vague nostalgia, questionable rankings, and the belief that next week’s list will finally give Tom Zenk the respect he deserves.

Investors should be aware that WCW Top 10 Coin™ may experience sudden market fluctuations caused by:

  • Unexpected appearances by Oz.
  • Insider trading by Missy Hyatt.
  • Corrections issued by angry fans of the York Foundation.
  • Discovery that the coin’s entire blockchain was secretly booked by the WCW Committee.

Past performance is not indicative of future results, particularly because there are no results.

Ownership of WCW Top 10 Coin™ does not grant voting rights, shareholder rights, mineral rights, television rights, or the right to challenge rankings involving Rick Rude in 1991.

WCW Top 10 Coin™ is not FDIC insured, CDIC insured, wrestler insured, manager insured, or protected against market crashes caused by an ill-advised heel turn.

By purchasing WCW Top 10 Coin™, you acknowledge that:

  1. The moon is a work.
  2. The dip is a shoot.
  3. The pump is sponsored by anonymous sources “close to the booking committee.”
  4. Any resemblance to an actual investment strategy is purely coincidental.

If your WCW Top 10 Coin™ loses more than 90% of its value, please remain calm. This is considered a successful launch.

  1. Barry Windham
  2. Ron Simmons
  3. Nikita Koloff
  4. Sting
  5. El Gigante
  6. Steve Austin
  7. Diamond Studd
  8. Johnny B. Badd
  9. Dustin Rhodes
  10. Beautiful Bobby

WCW Champion: Lex Luger

Who the fuck did Ron Simmons even beat to end at #2?!

The Patriots v. Black Bart & Rich Myers

So Bart is obviously done with the Desperado deal already and back to doing jobs. Myers is the guy long rumored to be the secret son of George Steele, although that was complete nonsense. The Patriots are of course Todd Champion as a vaguely defined military character, and CHIP THE FIREBREAKER (aka Firebreaker Chip) and this was supposed to be appealing to the youths I guess. Curtis Thompson got a million tryouts in the WWF but this was the only actual push he ever got. Bart slugs away on Todd to start, but a bodypress gets two. Champion slams him and it’s over to Chip, so Bart tags out to Myers. Todd with a delayed suplex and Chip teases an airplane spin and then goes up with a middle rope samoan drop instead to finish at 3:02. So he won with a fireman’s carry I guess. LAME. These guys SUCK.

Meanwhile, the Enforcers tell Tom Zenk & Robert Gibson that they’re going right for Robert’s knee and they’re not even hiding it.

The Enforcers v. Robert Gibson & Tom Zenk

Gibson was of course on the way out of the promotion soon so I’m guessing he’s doing the job here. Everyone brawls to start and they head to the floor, where Arn immediately hits Robert in the bad knee with a chair, not even being subtle about it. Back in the ring, Larry goes to work on it and Arn wraps it around the post. Apparently the Enforcers have advanced in the tag team title tournament, although I guess the whole thing is on World Championship Wrestling and they haven’t actually provided brackets or updates elsewhere. Zenk tries to save his partner and gets taken out by the ref, and Arn continues brutalizing the knee and goes to a half crab. And the ref stops the match at 3:20. Looks like Robert was gone by the end of the month, although he taped a couple of TV appearances so it seemed like he was around longer.

Straight Talk with the Boss, with special guest Lex Luger. TA asks the tough question about why Lex needs Harley Race and Mr. Hughes. Hughes still has the fake World title belt because this would have been taped literally the day after the Bash.

Terrence Taylor v. The Yellow Dog

Dog with a dropkick and he goes to work on the wing of the Computerized Poultry of the 90s. Dog takes him to the floor with a headscissors and Taylor gets some advice from the computer, which is “Don’t take a gimmick where you’re playing a chicken”. Too late. Back in the ring, Dog misses a charge and Taylor powerbombs him for two. Perfect necksnap and he drops a knee for two. Taylor with a chinlock, but Dog makes the comeback with a backdrop. Dog with a sunset flip for the pin at 4:00. Incredibly, this Yellow Dog thing dragged on until OCTOBER.

Meanwhile the Enforcers are challenged by Big Josh & Beautiful Bobby for next week’s show. That’s a hell of a team actually but not in 1991.

The Hardliners v. Rick Steiner & Sting

Now there’s a mystery partner! Also a hell of a team back in 1987 UWF. I thought we just getting Kazmaier here so even I popped for that. Rick fights off the Hardliners and goes to work on Slater’s arm, and that brings Sting in for more of the same. The heels take Sting back to the corner and double-team him, but Sting takes Murdoch down with the armbar and Rick continues on with that. Slater slugs him down to take over and now Murdoch works on Rick’s arm. Rick backdrops out of a piledriver attempt and it’s hot tag Sting for the DONNYBROOK. Stinger splash on Slater and he goes for the Deathlock, but Murdoch breaks it up and Steiner brings a chair in, so the ref throws out the match at 4:55 and awards it to the Hardliners. Way too short and a lot of a fun. I guess this was kinda the blowoff for the Hardliners feud?

Much better show this week as the Enforcers are proving to be a surprising highlight of 1991.
