The SmarK Rant for UWF Power Pro Wrestling – 01.10.87

I know I’ve had some more requests for Crockett stuff but Richard has been slowly building out his collection of these and I feel like I can start them now.

Welcome to the era where Mid-South is dead and replaced with the UWF, with Jim Crockett about to step in and buy Watts out. But not quite yet.

Taped from the historic Cowtown Coliseum in Ft. Worth TX, NEXT TO BILLY BOB’S STEAKHOUSE!

Your host is Jim Ross, who announces that Hacksaw Duggan & Terry Taylor have won the UWF tag team titles after last week’s show.

Eli the Eliminator v. Mike Reed

Definitely some World Class flavor here with Eli. Eli pounds away on Reed and hits a legdrop for two, and then goes to a chinlock. Eli looks a bit like a Wendell Cooley, minus all the charisma and plus all the steroids. Tombstone finishes at 1:54, as he takes 30 seconds to figure out the setup and then still fucks it up and drops Reed on his head.

Hacksaw Duggan & Terry Taylor v. Mike George & Jack Victory

Although Duggan & Taylor are the tag team champions, they never lost the belts as Duggan got poached by the WWF at the end of the month and never dropped it. Victory goes after Taylor to start and they do a wacky dropdown spot that ends with Victory colliding with George instead. Over to Mike, who grabs a headlock but then gets pinballed by the babyfaces, resulting in Duggan chasing the referee out of the ring because he’s a madman. George attacks him and Duggan punches him in the jaw and sends him back for Jack Victory. Victory, Dave Meltzer’s favorite wrestler in the world, beats on Duggan in the corner, but the heels quickly collide like a couple of geeks and Duggan brings Taylor in again for a double-team elbow on Victory. Mike George tries to help his partner and again makes it worse, as the heels collide again and George exists the ring, allowing Taylor to hit Victory with the five-arm for the pin at 4:28. A very wacky comedy match that was a lot of fun.

Meanwhile, we hear from One Man Gang and Ted Dibiase about their upcoming series of title matches on the house show circuit. IN A STEEL CAGE!

Sting v. Ron Ellis

Sting was freshly spun off from the Blade Runners and into Eddie Gilbert’s stable as a single, slimmed down a lot and quickly getting better. Sting beats on Ellis with forearms and adds a clothesline for the pin at 0:45, as they keep it blessedly short with him.

Chavo Guerrero stops by to chat with Jim Ross about the upcoming Dr. Death v. Bamm Bamm main event. The winner of that match gets a shot at One Man Gang for the UWF title, so we take a look back at the last time Doc faced Gordy.

UWF World title: Terry Gordy v. Steve Williams

From September 1986, and we’re joined with them in a double down, but Gordy is up first and accidentally bumps the ref on a bodypress. So a second ref comes in and HE gets bumped, while Doc hits the Oklahoma Stampede and the first ref revives and counts two. Gordy misses a blind charge and Doc hits a german suplex, but both referees are counting and one calls it for Gordy and one calls it for Williams. OK I hate the double shoulder pin finish but that was a really creative way to do it at least.

Meanwhile, we hear from Doc and Gordy and they’re both pretty certain they’re the toughest guy in the UWF and they’re gonna hurt each other, specifically in the arm area.

Terry Gordy v. Steve Williams

They brawl outside before the bell, and fight for a slam in the ring, which Doc wins. Doc with a senton for two and he hits Gordy with a headbutt, knocking himself loopy in the process. He tries a piledriver but Gordy runs him into the corner and throws some damn fine punches to put him down. Doc slugs back, hitting the Lawler style punches, and a clothesline gets two. Doc whips him into the corners and slugs him down, but Gordy tosses him to the floor to buy time. They brawl out there and Gordy runs him into the railing and back in for a snap suplex that gets two. We take a break and return with Gordy holding a bearhug. Gordy slams him for two and goes back to the bearhug, but they fight to the floor again and this time Gordy eats the railing. Back in the ring, Doc makes the comeback and JR is just selling the shit out of this while Doc slugs away on him and hits a shoulderblock. Gordy tosses him back to the floor and they fight out there again until Gordy runs him into the post and both guys are counted out at 9:47. This was a really swank TV brawl for the time and Gordy was a hell of a worker. He was throwing some crispy punches back before his brain got fried. ***1/2.

Doc gets busted open as the fight continues, and he hits Gordy until it’s double-juice, and the ref gets tossed aside like trash before Gordy hits a piledriver on Williams and proceeds to further kicking his ass. But then Doc powers up and hits the Oklahoma Stampede as referees and geeks all come in and try to split them up and Doc kicks everyone’s ass and continues the fight with Gordy. Finally Doc sends him to the floor and wrestlers manage to split them up and get Gordy out of there. That post-match brawl was INCREDIBLE. Throw another ½* on the match for it.

Bunkhouse Brawl

We’ve got a minute left in the show as everyone gets BILLY BOB’S TEXAS STEAKHOUSE shirts to wear, which I guess is like the redneck version of the Ribero jacket from Japan. So everyone starts fighting but we’re DESPERATELY OUT OF TIME for the week and JR wraps it up.

Holy shit you gotta check out that Doc-Gordy match, guys. It’ll put hair on your chest and make your balls drop at the same time.
