The SmarK Rant for Mid-South Wrestling – 10.09.82
Taped from Shreveport, LA
Your hosts are Boyd Pierce & Bob Roop
LAST WEEK: Ted Dibiase is facing Mr. Wrestling II and the time expires on the show, so they continue taping the match and pick things up again this week.
Ted Dibiase v. Mr. Wrestling II
We join it with Wrestling II hammering away on Dibiase as they sign off last week’s show, and Wrestling takes him down with a snapmare for two. Small package gets two. Slam gets two, but then Hacksaw Duggan runs in for a beatdown. No one saves, so Wrestling II fights them off alone and puts Dibiase on the floor with the kneelift and then dodges Duggan and kneelifts him as well. Dibiase comes back in again, so Wrestling II hits him with another pair of kneelifts and pins him. “THEY’VE BEEN WHIPPED!” declares Cowboy happily. Man he really loved Mr. Wrestling II.
LAST WEEK: Buck Robley is about to beat Akbar, but the Mongolian Stomper debuts and lays out Robley.
The Mongolian Stomper v. Mike Bond
Stomper beats on Bond with forearms in the corner and chops him down before putting the boots to him while Roop talks about how Mongolia has a great amateur wrestling program. Bond decides to fight back and Stomper kicks the shit out of him in the corner as a result and then finishes with the cobra sleeper at 2:30.
Buck Robley v. Grappler #2
Robley takes him down with a facelock while Iron Mike and Mr. Wrestling II join us at ringside to watch Buck’s back and prevent any run-ins. Grappler 2 goes to the arm and works on that for a bit, but Buck pokes him in the eyes and takes over again while Grappler 1 tries to get to ringside and gets cut off. They continue trading armbars until Robley actually takes him down with a headscissors and then gets the sleeper to finish at 5:25 while Grappler 1 is watching helplessly from the aisle.
Iron Mike Sharpe & Dick Murdoch v. Ted Dibiase & Hacksaw Duggan
Dibiase slugs Murdoch down, but misses an elbow, and Murdoch takes him down with a flying headscissors and sends him running with a bionic elbow. “That’s one of them honky tonk moves” notes Roop. It’s funny because people on the classic wrestling accounts will post clips of Killer Karl Cox on Twitter and every time you watch him you go “Oh, there’s another thing that Murdoch took from him.” Over to Iron Mike, who dropkicks Duggan and takes him down with an armdrag, but then Dick comes in and gets double-teamed in the heel corner. Dibiase drops an elbow for two and Murdoch throws Ted off and comes back with a sunset flip for two. Iron Mike works on Duggan’s leg, but the heels trap Sharpe in the corner and work him over for a bit, before Dibiase misses a backdrop and it’s back to Murdoch again. Dibiase gets a cheapshot and goes to the top, but Murdoch pops up and slugs him on the way down before going into a criss cross and hitting a bodypress for two. Iron Mike beats on Dibiase with forearms and then rams the heels together in the corner to set up the piledriver, but the ref escorts Murdoch out and Duggan hits Sharpe with the running headbutt, allowing Dibiase to load up the ISOTONER OF DEATH and knock out Sharpe for the pin at 7:51. This was a really entertaining tag match as Dibiase & Duggan continue the march to the tag team title rematch.
Kamala v. Vinnie Romeo
Still working out the kinks as Friday takes forever taking all of Kamala’s various gear off, like earrings and armbands. They needed to get that down to the mask so they could start the match right away. Kamala no-sells all of Romeo’s stuff, bearhugs him, and then splashes him for the pin at 1:13.
Mid-South tag team champions Junkyard Dog & Mr. Olympia v. Bob Stabler & Kelly Kiniski
Olympia takes Kiniski down with armdrags and it’s over to Stabler, who doesn’t fare very well against JYD. The champs double-team him and Dog hits the Thump to finish at 1:40.
Jesse Barr v. Tim Horner
They trade takedowns and Barr rolls him up for two as Boyd Pierce announces that in two weeks, JYD and Mr. Olympia will defend against Ted Dibiase & Hacksaw Duggan with the loser of the fall having to leave the territory! OH YEAH. No spoilers but that one has an all time great payoff. Horner and Barr trade some stuff on the mat with time running out and it’s a draw at 4:20 as the show ends.
The build to the Superdome continues! Loving this stuff.
