The SmarK Rant for Lucha Underground – S01E36

“Beginning of the End”

Is this episode about the Dodgers’ playoff run?

So this show is actually on Prime Video in Canada! All four seasons in fact. With all the kids talking about Penta and luchadors in WWE and AEW, it seems like a good time to pick it up again and hopefully finally finish the first season at the very least.

Taped from the Aztec Temple

Your hosts are Matt Striker & Vampiro

Meanwhile, Dario Cueto explains the lore of the Aztec medallions to Pentagon and even offers him one for being so awesome. But Penta isn’t interested in trinkets, only what his Master wants. Which is to DESTROY VAMPIRO. And only then will the Master reveal himself.

Aztec Medallion match: Bengala v. Delavar Daivari

Daivari actually kind of nailed the Andrew Tate/cryptobro character before the real thing existed. Bengala immediately uses some cool rope walks to put Daivari on the floor and follows with a dive, but he goes up and Big Rick shoves him off to put Daivari in control. Bengala comes back with a handspring elbow and they slug it out, but Bengala gets a DDT and rolls into a cradle for two. Superkick gets two. He decides to dive onto Big Rick to take him out, but he goes up afterwards and Daivari cuts him off with a superplex for two. But then Bengala runs Daivari into Rick and finishes with a german suplex at 3:30. We still don’t know what the medallions are for, but he’s got one. **1/2

Vampiro joins us in the ring, and talks about how Pentagon has been pushing him to come back out of retirement for one more match. But even though Penta covered him in gas and tried to light him on fire, he still respects the kid. So this brings out Pentagon, who demands the match at ULTIMA LUCHA or else Vamp is gonna be branded a coward. Vampiro tries to protest that he’s just Ian Hodgkinson now and he’s not taking the match. But then he reveals that Vampiro is the one who will be kicking Penta’s ass, and he lays him out with a uranage.

Meanwhile, Sexy Star reminisces about taking Superfly’s mask.

Aztec Medallion match: King Cuerno v. Killshot

Cuerno hits Killshot with chops in the corner, but he comes back with a snapmare into a sort of House Call kick, I guess. Dropkick from Cuerno puts Killshot on the floor, but he cuts off a dive with a head kick from the apron and slingshots in with a cutter for two. Killshot tosses him and follows with a dive into a rana on the floor. Back in, Killshot tries a springboard, but Cuerno catches him and just slams the shit out of him on the apron, bouncing him to the floor. Nasty. Back in the ring, Cuerno puts the boots to him, but Killshot gets a high cross for two. But then Cuerno spikes him with a poison rana and sends him to the floor for a dive. Back in, Cuerno faceplants him and ties him up into a bow and arrow hold for the submission at 6:10. I thought this skinny young kid had a shot, but then Cuerno swerved us and beat him clean. Guess the kid couldn’t handle big pressure. ***

Aztec Medallion match: Superfly v. Sexy Star

Given Superfly’s broken arm at the hands of Penta, Sexy wisely goes right for it and finishes with an armbar at 0:30 to win the medallion. So then Marty the Moth Martinez hits the ring and demands that Sexy give him the medallion.

Sexy Star v. Marty the Moth

So Sexy is game and hits him with kicks before going to the top for a flying armdrag. To the top again for a bodypress, but Marty catches and slams her for two. Marty puts her down with a shouderblock and goes to the figure-four, but she quickly reverses. And then she goes to the armbar and taps the Moth out as well to retain her medallion at 2:20.

Coming soon: Ultima Lucha! So big it needs two episodes! Johnny Mundo v. Alberto el Patron! Texano v. Blue Demon Jr! Disciples of Death v. Son of Havoc, Angelico & Ivellise! Drago v. Hernandez! Vampiro v. Pentagon! Prince Puma v. Mil Muertes for the Lucha Underground title!

Dario Cueto brings out Prince Puma and Mil Muertes for a face off, because he’s impatient and can’t wait three weeks for the showdown. But Catrina immediately comes out with the Disciples of Death, prompting a beatdown until Konnan comes out and fights them off with his cane. And that goes badly for him, until they shove him in a casket to end the show.

What a fun show this was. We’re definitely gonna bang through these last three episodes and wrap up season one now.
