GWF Tag team title tournament semi-finals: Makhan Singh & Cactus Jack v. Tom Davis

Sadly, Mike Davis was injured in the last round, so Mike’s loving brother Tom Davis has to go it alone with the Cartel. Tom holds his own and takes Cactus to the floor for a suplex on the stage out there, and then slugs it out with Makhan in the ring and ties him in the ropes. Small package on Cactus gets one while Makhan is helpless, and he runs Cactus into his partner, but then walks into a clothesline from Cactus as the heels take over. Makhan beats Tom down and adds a legdrop, and then offers Tom a chance to tag his nonexistent partner in the corner. That’s pretty mean. Cactus slugs away on Tom and drops a knee on him, and it’s back to Makhan for more punishment in the corner. Jacks a suplex for two and tosses Tom, adding a Cactus elbow off the apron. Craig notes that the move is called a “hip buster” because it’s going to destroy Jack’s hip eventually. I believe that was correct, although lord knows that was the least of Jack’s issues later in life. And back in the ring, Singh puts him away at 6:33 to advance to the finals. *1/2

GWF Tag team title tournament semi-finals: Chris Walker & Steve Simpson v. The Royal Family

They’re still trying to get over “The Maulers” as the new name for Morgan & Victory, and indeed they maul the babyfaces right away, but Simpson fights them off and makes a comeback on Victory in the ring. Rip gets the cheap knee from the apron to put him down and the heels take over with a double elbow before Victory goes to the bearhug. Morgan with a clothesline out of the corner, and they toss Simpson over the top rope behind the ref’s back. Walker of course keeps trying to get the ref’s attention and ends up messing things up for them, but Simpson collides with Victory and makes the hot tag to Walker, who quickly hits a crossbody on Morgan for the surprise pin at 7:00 to advance to the finals. This was just the babyfaces selling for a few minutes and then getting a surprise comeback win. *

GWF Tag team title tournament semi-finals: The Renegade Warriors v. Rip Rogers & Scotty Anthony

Scott and Rip disrobing each other is delightfully obnoxious. Rip tries to gain the advantage and gets run into Anthony via atomic drop, and the heels sell the devastating facial injuries that result from that. Anthony tries to overpower Chris Youngblood and takes a bodypress for two as a result, and it’s back to Rip again. Rip and Scott try to double-team Chris and Rip takes a big running swing at Chris and of course hits Scott by mistake and sends him flying off the apron with some classic Memphis nonsense. Scotty comes in and uses pugilism to slug Mark down, and Rip comes in and chokes him down. Anthony misses a blind charge and runs into Mark’s boot, and it’s hot tag Chris. He throws chops on the heels as Rip goes flying like a ragdoll off each one, and the Youngbloods double-team Anthony. But then Chris hits Anthony with a german suplex, and Scott lifts his shoulder at two and gets the pin at 7:40 to advance to the finals. In case I haven’t ranted about it in a while, I HATE that finish. It’s so stupid and if you’re a babyface who is too stupid to get your own shoulder up while doing your move, you deserve to lose. Anyway Rip Rogers & Scott Anthony continue to carry this tournament on their muscled shoulders and probably deserve to win. *1/2

So this episode was actually edited down to 23 minutes with all the commercials and talking cut out, so let’s just go ahead and check out the finals from the next week
