Taped from Atlanta, GA
Your host is Gordon Solie
Sterling Golden v. Jack Fore & Curtis Brazil
Young Mr. Golden doing handicap matches against jobbers was pretty standard for this era of his career. Sterling overpowers Fore with wristlocks to start and hits him with the devastating FULL BODYSLAM and then a vertical suplay for two. The red tights and green boots on Golden make him look like some kind of, I dunno, Santa with muscles. Sterling with a backbreaker for two and a full bodyslam for two as he keeps lifting the geek up. Over to Brazil, who certainly does seem smooth and hairless, but the GOLDEN SQUEEZE finishes him at 3:00.
Afterwards, Golden gets into a confrontation with Tony Atlas, although I’m not sure what specific trait about Atlas would make Golden so mad.
Stan Hansen joins Gordon and he’s not impressed with “The Orange Squeeze” and he’s gonna put it up against the Lariat on Friday at the Omni. Meanwhile Tommy Rich and Tony Atlas are known as TNT, which means DYNAMITE. Well until it moves to TBS.
Austin Idol is here and all us men better hold our ladies back and strap them into their seats so they don’t leave and run away with him. Good to know!
Tommy Rich & Tony Atlas v. Carl Fergie & Bill Howard
Atlas rides Fergie to the mat and Carl makes the ropes, and it’s over to Howard. He gets nowhere, and Rich works a headlock on Fergie as the teenage girls in the crowd go NUTS for Rich and sing at him like they’re doing a TikTok video. Atlas works the arm, but Howard gets a cheapshot in the corner to briefly take over. But then Fergie comes in and Atlas puts him down with a headbutt and the big splash for the pin at 3:19.
Bob Armstrong has words for Bobby Heenan, as he’s apparently teaming with Ole Anderson now and will face his team at the Omni. I feel like that’s not gonna work out well for him.
So for some reason these episodes are cut up so that the first 15 minutes are the end of a previous show and then it starts with the current week’s show. I’m not sure why KrisP’s source has them cut up that way.
Paul Boesch stops by to join Gordon to open the “next” episode, and he also thinks that Ole Anderson isn’t trustworthy.
Tony Atlas v. Buck Brannigan
That’s a goddamn spectacular jobber name right there. Atlas works a facelock and slugs away in the corner, and then hits Buck with the FULL BODYSLAM while the girls in the crowd are singing like a PPV crowd in France. Atlas with a backdrop and Brannigan is bumping all over for it, trying to make the most of his 5 minutes of TV time before grabbing a headlock. But Atlas drops elbows on him for two. And then he goes up and completely misses a bodypress, instead doing what looks like the first ever Buff Blockbuster back in 1979 for the pin at 5:00. I don’t know who was worse in that match but they were both out there flailing around like a pair of baby deer learning to walk.
Ole Anderson joins Gordon and he’s kind of overwhelmed by people CHEERING for him for once. In fact he kind of liked it! But then Bill Howard and Buck Brannigan stop by and interrupt to start some shit, and Ole promptly wallops them and sends them running. So Bob Armstrong accuses Bobby Heenan of hiring those two hired goons to take out Ole, which has obviously failed. So on Friday, they’re gonna beat on Kox and Ladd while Bobby is locked in the cage and then take out their leftover aggressions on Bobby Heenan when they win. So Bob is like “Shake my hand, big guy!” and Ole is all into this babyface stuff and the crowd digs it. Wrestling is awesome. Ole reluctantly buying into his new role as a babyface in real time was fantastic to see.
Carl Fergie v. Ricky Fields
But first, Ernie Ladd and an enraged Bobby Heenan stop by to call Ole an egg sucking dog who was kicked out of the Marine corps, and Bobby is disgusted that Ole and Bob would slander his name and accuse him paying off those goons. So Ernie is apparently still Georgia tag team champions with Ole despite their issues. But he’s carrying around both belts. Fergie slams out of a wristlock by Fields, but Ricky takes him down with a headscissors and goes to work on the arm. Fergie throws forearms in the corner and whips him into the corner for two. Fields slugs him down into a jackknife cradle for two. Fields with a back suplex and he follows with a kneelift for two. Fergie blocks a blind charge with a knee to the gut and follows with a backdrop, but Fields hits him with a kneelift and finishes with a release northern lights suplex at 5:55. More like a backdrop I guess. Either way, nice little match here.
Bobby Jaggers is disgusted with the actions of Ole Anderson, who apparently couldn’t win a match before Ernie Ladd kindly took him under his wing and then BETRAYED the Big Cat! Also he hates Bob Armstrong’s face.
Jacques Goulet & Chris Markoff v. Bret Hart & Chic Donovan
Young Bret hails from Great Falls, Montana, I hear. Now don’t get confused, this isn’t the future Barry Horowitz, it’s some unrelated other guy. Hart throws dropkicks on the heels and throws forearms on Markoff, but Goulet takes him down with a hairtoss. So it’s over to Donovan, and the European tag team champions (they had a trophy and everything!) work him over in the corner and double-team the arm. Markoff goes to the nerve pinch and Goulet gets a fireman’s carry and goes to the arm again, and Markoff hammerlocks him deep and pins him at 4:35 to end the show.
MAN that Ole promo was something else. If you need one reason to check out this episode, that was it. If you need another one there’s that guy in that last match too I guess.
