In case you missed it, here’s a look back at Night One. AAA presents Noche de los Grandes Night Two tonight on Youtube from Arena Monterrey in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. The English language announcing team consists of Corey Graves, John Bradshaw Layfield, and AAA General Manager Rey Mysterio on match calls and analysis. There are two more HUGE matches on tonight’s card, so let’s not waste any time. Let’s watch some lucha!
Then, Now, Forever………TOGETHER
We start with highlights of Mask vs Mask, and a week later, it’s still in my head. There can be only one, and there was. Here’s AAA GM and WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio with his phone. Bayley, AAA Mixed Tag and NXT Women’s Champion Lola Vice, and La Catalina arrive in a truck prior to their big six woman tag.
AAA Cruiserweight Championship Number One Contenders Match: Octagon vs Cruz del Toro vs Lince Dorado vs Joaquin Wilde vs Mini Vikingo
Wilde and del Toro immediately start working together and dump Dorado and Octagon to the floor. Vikingo lands on his feet after an attempted back body drop but del Toro and Wilde go right back to work on him. Their double team efforts end with a del Toro springboard moonsault on a helpless Vikingo, who bails to the floor. During an LWO call to the audience, Wilde rolls up del Toro for two. They shake over the treachery but continue fighting. Del Toro slips a charge but misses a top rope move. Del Toro rolls up Wilde for two and there are some gymnastics leading to a standoff. Octagon and Dorado finally come back in and grab roll ups on del Toro and Wilde that both get two.
Octagon hits a swank torneo on Dorado and then ascends after Dorado misses a charge. Octagon snaps off a top rope torneo armdrag and wants a monkey flip, but Dorado lands on his feet. There’s some rope-running and Dorado manages to send Octagon to the floor with a rana. Vikingo re-emerges and he runs into a Dorado backbreaker and a lariat that gets two. Dorado hoists Vikingo who rolls all the way through a helicopter rana. Dorado ends up on the floor as Octagon and Wilde rejoin things. Vikingo hits some stellar acrobatics and goes to work on Octagon with some kicks and a rope-walk rana. Vikingo gets dumped by Wilde, who then goes to his hair spray for a touch up. Wilde runs headlong into an Octagon kaman giri and while those two and Dorado are slugging it out, they get waffled by a del Toro top rope torneo to the floor.
Vikingo sprints into a del Toro enziguri and del Toro ascends for a rope walk dropkick before covering Vikingo for two. Vikingo fires off a roll-through powerbomb and covers del Toro for two. Wilde flies in with a leaping DDT on Vikingo and del Toro tries to steal the cover but only gets two. Dorado flies in and wallops a bickering del Toro and Wilde with a double stunner. Dorado misses a charge and Wilde yanks him up for a tilt-a-whirl facebuster. Dorado shakes that off and moves out of the way of Wilde’s top rope splash/legdrop attempt. Dorado crushes Wilde with a brainbuster that sends Wilde to the floor and Dorado uses the alone time to fire off a tope suicida on everybody. Dorado tosses Wilde back in and ascends for a Shooting Star Press and that finishes things.
The crowd, who had to have just been emotionally spent after Mask vs Mask, was largely quiet for this. The competitors did their best to try to get some excitement going but the crowd didn’t really go with them. This was technically proficient lucha and I’m not surprised Dorado won. The lack of heat hurt this one, though, in my opinion. 2.5*
Winner – Lince Dorado (Shooting Star Press on Wilde)
Here’s newly-crowned AAA Tag Team Champions The War Raiders. They don’t care where the next fight comes from because nobody is ready for WAR.
Dorian Roldan is congratulating the new AAA Latin American Champion El Hijo del Vikingo who’s flanked by Omos. El Ojo make a pact to go for all the gold.
Graves mentions the TripleMania schedule, and then throws to Rey Mysterio speaking to the media about Mask vs Mask and what it meant and what the future might hold for El Grande Americano. Mysterio then talks about the upcoming WWE main roster Latin American tour including Raw and Smackdown happening in Mexico City. Mysterio talks about Mega Champion Dominik Mysterio coming to Merida for the June 20th show there, and then mentions that whomever is Mega Champion will defend that title on Night Two of Triplemania in Mexico City.
Here’s some highlights of the buildup to the main event including Las Toxicas attacking La Catalina before Vice and Bayley made the save to even things up. That big main event is NEXT.
We see the unmasking of Chad Gable and his subsequent speech to the crowd, promising to return to AAA. The drama was just off the charts the entire time. Here’s some post-match comments from El Grande Americano who’s being helped by Rayo and Bravo Americano. EGA thanks the fans and the entire nation for being behind him and doesn’t have the words to tell everyone how much the whole thing meant to him.
Las Toxicas (AAA Women’s Champion Flammer, La Hiedra, and Lady Maravilla) vs La Catalina, AAA Mixed Tag and NXT Women’s Champion Lola Vice, and Bayley
Las Toxicas come out in cheerleader get-ups and matching blue and gold gear. Bayley gets an enormous pop and a chant when she emerges. Flammer sees that Catalina is going to start for the babyface side and immediately tags in Maravilla. Catalina snaps off an armdrag and a running shotgun dropkick. Maravilla shakes that off and hits some kicks on Catalina before running her into the Toxicas corner. Hiedra tags in and misses a charge before eating a Catalina back elbow. Catalina hits a Baisaku knee and drags Hiedra to the face corner where Vice tags in. Vice and Catalina hit some double team stuff that ends with a Vice reverse thrust kick as she covers Hiedra for two.
Hiedra fires up with a right and puts the stink-mouth on Vice, who responds with her shotgun low kicks. Hiedra ends up in a corner and Vice waffles her with the Hip Attack a couple of times. Maravilla and Flammer charge in but are met by Catalina and Bayley. There’s a triple babyface suplex followed by a triple HIp Attack. Catalina hits a tope suicida on Flammer and Vice hits a senton drop on Maravilla. Hiedra flies around and runs Vice into the ring steps before running her back in. Maravilla gets a tag and she starts working Vice over in the heel corner. Flammer tags in and puts the boots to Vice before taunting the faces. The heels triple team Vice with a spinebuster and a turkey bone. Flammer smashes Vice with a Meteora and covers her for two.
Vice fights her way out of the heel corner but gets dumped to the floor by Flammer. Flammer taunts Bayley while Hiedra and Maravilla continue the assault on Vice on the floor. Flammer mashes Vice down with a lariat that gets two. Flammer ties Vice up and pulls her into a submission. Vice bridges for one and then kicks her way out of the double chicken win. Flammer gets dumped to the floor but she springs in and tags Maravilla back in. Maravilla tries to prevent Vice from tagging but she’s unsuccessful and Bayley finally tags in.
Bayley smashes everyone around and hits a springboard armdrag on Hiedra. Maravilla charges and Bayley sends her to the apron for a twisting neckbreaker. Bayley positions Maravilla and ascends for the Savage Elbow. Bayley covers Maravilla and gets two. Bayley wants the Bayley-to-belly but Maravilla prevents it and tags in Flammer. Hiedra and Maravilla take out Catalina off the apron and then charge at Bayley to…well…crotch her on the ring post. Flammer wallops Bayley with a shotgun dropkick and Flammer covers her for two. Catalina charges in for some banter with Flammer who flips her off and pulls Bayley up. Bayley grabs an inside cradle for two and then tags in Catalina. Catalina ascends for a moonsault but Maravilla and Hiedra fly in to break up the cover at one. Everyone starts fighting and the whole thing ends with Flammer eating a Catalina superkick and a Hip Attack along the ropes. Catalina hits another Baisaku knee and covers Flammer for three!
Well, that little piece of business will have some fallout, for sure. Flammer doesn’t lose much and that was a clean pin from Catalina. With big events coming up over the summer, I’d expect to see a huge showdown for the title at some point. This was fun and woke the crowd back up for the end of the show. 4*
Winners – Bayley/Catalina/Vice (Catalina Baisaku knee on Flammer)
Post-match sees a livid group of Toxicas retreating up the aisle while the faces celebrate in the ring. The credits roll and we’re out.
Night Two wasn’t quite the grand spectacle that Night One was but nothing was topping Mask vs Mask. The main event was solid and well put-together and I thought it really cemented Catalina as a viable challenger for Flammer’s title. Overall, this was a decent 45 minutes and a nice follow up to the epic Night One.
Thanks for reading and commenting. Enjoy your Sunday.
