Endorsement of a Feud After the Fact
By Scott Keith on 1 April 2025
Dear Scott,
Hope this email finds you well.
Watching Smackdown a couple of evenings ago, it struck me: The feud between CM Punk and Drew McIntyre had a proper ending booked and completed six months ago, and yet everywhere the heel goes, many thousands of people in attendance chant the babyface's name toward hi to get under his skin.
This happened to Drew during the feud itself many times, it should be noted. However, for it to continue six months later…
It's difficult to think what could be a greater endorsement of a feud as being legendary.
What other feuds stuck to performers after the fact because they were so darned good?
I'm still catching up with earlier AEW, but one fairly recent example that stands out was some chanting toward Hangman Page or “Heelman Page” when he was heeling it up, regarding the Swerve Strickland feud.
Older examples? Some tinged by reality, perhaps, and of those probably none more visceral than the “You Screwed Bret!” chants directed toward Shawn Michaels when they weren't being thrown at Vince McMahon?
In the case of Punk/McIntyre, it's so perfect, though, because I'm not sure if any wrestler has been so psychologically “gotten to” by another as McIntyre was in the specific case of Punk. Humorously, or maybe not so humorously, McIntyre has said on several occasions that he cannot even go to a supermarket or walk through an airport without people chanting “CM PUNK!” at him.
Please take care, and have a terrific new week!
Best possible regards,
Perfecto
I would say 1-2-3 Kid beating Razor sure stuck with both of them.
