Gunther vs Uso

By Scott Keith on 13 March 2025

Hey Scott,
It seems like some folks are getting up in arms about the Gunther vs. Jey Uso build and questioning why it would be one of the main events of WrestleMania, but are people forgetting that it's not at all unheard of for World Title matches to open one of the nights of WM? “Main-eventing WrestleMania” always makes everyone think about the last match, but even Flair vs. Savage was billed as one-half of a double “main event” and it went on in the middle of WM VIII. Honestly, isn't it far better for a Gunther-Jey match to open the show with the fresh crowd still hot, hyped for everything, and primed to do the “Yeet” chant en masse if/when Jey wins as opposed to risk putting them on after much bigger stars whose styles are probably far better suited to working in a massive stadium?

I think the bigger issue I'm seeing from most people is that the match itself just doesn't feel like a big deal, it feels like a RAW main event where they should just do the title change and open up the spot on the card for something more interesting. Like does Jey need to be in a World title match to go “Yeet yeet yeet”? Not really. I'm sure it'll be fine but there's like 7 or 8 guys legitimately deserving of that kind of showcase and you just don't hear a lot of people talking about either guy with a month left until the show.
