What the World Was Watching: WWF Superstars – October 9, 1993
By LScisco on 29 January 2025
Vince McMahon, Jerry Lawler, and Randy Savage provide comments on the action, wrapping up the television taping in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Lawler and Savage debate the significance of Columbus Day.
Opening Contest: Men on a Mission (w/Oscar) (11-0) beat Damien Demento & Anthony Green when Mo pins Green after a Rocket Launcher at 3:37:
Adding red boots and tassels to his look has not improved Demento’s fortunes. Men on a Mission have a house show program going with Well Dunn but it is so lopsided that it does not warrant a mention by the announcers. Demento does not want to mix it up with Mabel, throwing Green into the ring and whipping him into the big man. MOM runs through a lot of moves on Green, with Mabel placing Green too far from the corner with a DDT for the Rocket Launcher finish. This would be Demento’s last televised appearance, making no significant impact on the company during his tenure. He would return to the independent circuit and retire in 1994.
Gorilla Monsoon’s Update segment recaps the Bret Hart-Jerry Lawler feud. Bret Hart promises that if he gets another match with Lawler it will be the end of the King. Back in the broadcast area, Lawler says he has researched the Hart Family and found out that they were the original draft dodgers as they fled to Canada to escape service in America’ s first war.
Adam Bomb (w/Johnny Polo) (22-0) beats Mitch Bishop after a slingshot clothesline at 1:43:
Since Polo comes to the ring in a bathrobe, the announcers make some crude jokes about what happens in bathhouses. Bomb puts Bishop on dream street with kicks and knees, finishing with a slingshot clothesline. He does the Atom Smasher after the bell.
Lex Luger is on the cover of the new WWF Magazine! Since SummerSlam putting his face on a milk carton might be more appropriate.
Mr. Perfect (33-3-2) pins Red Tyler after the Perfectplex at 2:40:
Lawler hypes Perfect’s appearance on the King’s Court on Wrestling Challenge. Tyler’s tights somehow end up wedged up his rear end during the bout so his cheeks end showing for the last minute, triggering some banter between McMahon and Savage. That adds some levity to a run of the mill bout.
Survivor Series is coming on November 24! The advertisement emphasizes Yokozuna, the Steiner Brothers, and the Quebecers so one can infer they could be prominently featured.
Boni Blackstone interviews Bam Bam Bigelow and Luna Vachon. Bigelow tells Doink the Clown he is not going to let him get away with anymore antics. He tries to get the crowd to chant Doink’s name by saying that he is tired of hearing it but the fans do not bite. Bigelow warns Doink that he is going to send him back to the circus, doing his best to give this feud a serious bent. Even though Blackstone was doing a good job, this was her last appearance as she would be released due to budget cuts.
Well Dunn (w/Harvey Wippleman) (4-3) defeat Virgil & Jerry Fox when Timothy Well pins Fox after a Steven Dunn flying forearm at 3:33:
Virgil is still getting decent reactions, showing the power of the feud with Ted DiBiase years ago. He dominates his exchanges against Steven Dunn but when Fox tries to copy Virgil’s offense it does not work. Nothing Well Dunn does is exciting and, like Wrestling Challenge, the announcers do not spend a lot of time promoting the fact that Wippleman is their new manager.
The Undertaker (w/Paul Bearer) (12-0-1) pins Rod Bell after a chokeslam at 1:51:
The commentators talk about the Undertaker’s chances of beating Yokozuna for the WWF title as he methodically beats down Bell. He must be hurt, though, as he does not do many of his signature moves like the ropewalk or Tombstone. After the bout, Lawler uses the Royal Magistrator to draw Yokozuna coming down on the urn.
The Headshrinkers (w/Afa) (23-2-1) beat Steve Nixon & Tony Mazzara when Fatu pins Mazzara after the splash off the top rope at 2:59:
The Headshrinkers are not as brutal in this squash, even though the results are the same. In a thin tag team division they are waiting for something to do.
Rick Martel argues that Razor Ramon does not cut it and will not beat him for the Intercontinental Championship on RAW. Ramon rebuts that he is leaving on Monday night with all the gold.
Tune in next week to see the 1-2-3 Kid battle Pat Tatanka! Also, WWF Tag Team Champions the Quebecers and Ludvig Borga will be in action! And find out what the two main events will be for the Survivor Series!
The Last Word: The promo back-and-forth between Razor Ramon and Rick Martel reinforces what was discussed before about the WWF pivoting away from the importance of syndicated television and promoting a cable television product that a growing number of homes had access to. This show featured little, although the wardrobe malfunction problem with Red Tyler was good for a laugh.
Up Next: Wrestling Challenge for October 10!
