Who can stop Tony Khan?
By Scott Keith on 24 January 2025
I was a big AEW fan when the promotion first started and even traveled to see Sting’s last match which was outstanding. But I quit watching when they aired the CM Punk / Jack Perry footage. It seemed like a late stage WCW type desperation move for a ratings pop and just killed the entire product for me. (Tony Khan making himself a laughing stock by walking around the NFL Draft representing arguably the worst franchise in the league in a neck brace didn’t do them any favors either.)
That said, Kenny Omega’s return got me to try and buy back in. So I watch a little bit of Dynamite this week and what do I see? A great opening segment where Omega and Will Ospreay look like stars…
And Dean Ambrose vs. Edge as the main event storyline where even the fans still paying to watch AEW can’t be bothered to react? Because attempted murder every week and a senior citizen hobo on top of the card “where the best wrestle” certainly ain’t it.
Is there anyone in AEW, WBD, or on the open market that can possibly come in and book this company in a way that all of the people who have abandoned ship over the past year or two might be willing to give them another shot? Because if Kenny Omega’s return can’t even right the ship, I fear nothing else will.
P.S. Has anyone’s stock ever dropped after signing a new contract faster than MJF’s?
Lots to unpack with that one.
I don’t put a lot of stock in the WUT ABOUT THE CASUALS handwringing online. However, they are getting OLD on TV thanks to putting out COPE and Christian and Jarrett and Daniels and Joe and Jericho just to name a few. It’s a lot of aging WWE departures piling up and they’re pushing out the younger talent and making it tough to develop anyone. In theory that should be ROH but WHOOPS there’s Jericho again and then Dustin Rhodes (holding two titles) and you’re running into the same problem again. Johnny TV is hilarious but the dude is in his 40s now. It’s a major image problem.
As for MJF, he needs to go baby face again and just learn to live with people cheering him.
