Continental Classic – Every Wrestler Wins, Every Wrestler Loses
By Scott Keith on 21 December 2024
Doesn't a round robin tournament just rob wrestlers of mystique by virtue of them basically having to lose some matches?
It felt like a big deal when Fletcher beat Ospreay. I've now seen both Ospreay and Fletcher lose cleanly in this tournament.
Darby is supposed to be the next guy (I don't see it, but that's another issue). I saw him lose to Brody King….who lost to someone else….who lost to someone else.
Growing up, I rarely saw Bret Hart, HBK, Undertaker, Stone Cold, etc. lose matches. It rarely ever happened on TV unless it was part of a storyline. When it happened, it was oten on PPV against another top guy. It was a big deal.
This tournament feels like a lot of 50/50 booking by default. Am I wrong?
Probably not. I'm not feeling a lot of investment in this tournament, personally, and the timing of the shows is weird, especially having the big finale be on a Christmas episode that no one is gonna be watching. I was kind of hoping that they'd just have Fletcher run through it and be done with it, but now it's looking like Okada is gonna end up winning and retaining his title and although I love Okada I'm kinda meh on that idea. But we'll let it play out and see where it goes.
