World Wonder Stardom 5 Star Grand Prix August 15th 2024
By Phrederic on 1 October 2024
And we’re back with more Stardom as I’m trying to hammer through this for my adoring fans. I also plan on doing some Marigold/NOAH/All Japan stuff soon as we’re getting exciting things (well All Japan is doing exciting stuff, Marigold and NOAH feel more like obligations at this point), and I’m even looking at an absolutely insane GLEAT show that’s coming up soon (Parker Boudreaux! El Hijo del Vikingo vs. Ricochet vs. CIMA vs. some other guy! The Rascalz! Nakajima vs. Funaki…the MMA Funaki). Regardless, we’re back in Korakuen so Stardom is giving us some meatier matches. It’s supposedly 1400 in the hall and it looks good so let’s get down to it. Yet again, I’m just reviewing the block matches as I’ve seen enough Stardom random tags in my lifetime.
AZM [4] vs. Tam Nakano [0] – Red Block B Match
Background: AZM has been doing pretty well, not having lost a match yet in the tournament (1 win, 2 draws) and Tam has lost all her matches so far. In the past AZM used to make fun of Tam for being an old lady when AZM was a cheekier brat than she is now, and Tam of course is all the big emotions and high feelings of joshi, lots of tears and such though Tam of course has won the red belt and AZM hasn’t ever sniffed those heights. AZM is in her raver cat DJ outfit and Tam is in a lot of purple.
The Match: Both dance around a bit before throwing very slow and obviously choreographed kicks and them move through a quicksand juniors sequence. AZM does her legsweep near the rope, apron kick, and then diving stomp to the mats routine but Tam dodges the stomp. But AZM just goes at the knee and then a second attempt at the stomp lands. Back in and we get an AZM missile dropkick and an armbar to follow up. We get Tam napping on the mat for a bit before rolling out and then they fight over a brainbuster and they do a sequence that ends with a Tam backdrop driver. Tam’s glacial high kick sets up a hanging choke off the turnbuckle and everything Nakano does is in treacle. We get a struggle on the top rope and a terrible slugfest until AZM gets an armbar on the top rope and that somehow leads to a tree of woe and AZM gets the stomp off of that. Whatever. Another diving stomp and Tam kicks out and AZM gets the armbar again. Tam eventually makes the ropes and AZM goes for the Destroyer. Tam breaks with a forearm and then a superkick to a reverse-springboarding AZM and we get a double down. AZM attempts a tilt-a-whirl but Tam gets the German, and then teases the Tiger Suplex and we go through a sequence of counters that they all reverse. Tam spams the running knee strikes and then sets up the Tiger suplex (which involves Tam’s suddenly uninjured arm) but AZM gets the destroyer and then Azumi Sushi for 3.
*
This was the worst of both wrestlers in one match. AZM just doing all her spots with no focus or plan or charisma and Tam just being a bad, unathletic worker who can’t deliver any bit of their offense in a convincing fashion and is a terrible seller. Bad stuff but at least AZM’s technical execution is there even if the psychology is totally lacking.
Thekla [0] vs. Ranna Yagami [2] – Blue Block B Match
Background: Thekla is the evil, cocky, arrogant, gaijin-cruiser of the new HATE stable. She has a giant furry pimp coat, a tag-title, and is finding her footing as an evil dirtbag heel though she’s done okay. Ranna is the scrappy rookie participant for God’s Eye, she has two-toned hair, yellow and black gear, and is well-pushed for a rookie being in this tournament, and uh, oh she’s just the replacement for Victoria Yuzuki. Anyway, Ranna is a striker and a babyface and Thekla is a dirty heel.
The Match: hot-start as Ranna just dropkicks Thekla and pummels her in the corner, but a few precise shots from the Toxic Spider turn the tides and the Austrian gets a big boot on the apron and Thekla prances to the top rope to get a stomp to Ranna’s back. Pure heel domination here. More precise kicks from Thekla and she calls to “FINISH THIS” as she tunes up the band…and runs into a Ranna dropkick and some of Yagami’s own strikes follow. KARATE! Ranna gets a juji-gatame on Thekla with full extension and then a ton of other stuff (small package, kitchen-sink knee!) as Yagami is chewing up the relative vet. Thekla finally gets a spear to get some space and then the Toxic Death Drop finishes as Thekla gets like a 7-count on the finish.
**½
Basically a squash (though Ranna got a nice shine segment) and it was great to set up that Thekla’s finishing combo can just kill you OUTTA NOWHERE. Fun stuff and I honestly don’t think you need to be 20 minutes long to be a fine match, and this match was fine.
Koguma [0] vs. Miyu Amasaki [2] – Blue Block A Match
Background: Woof. So uh…Koguma is the goofball tag-team specialist who dances like a bear and does comedy spots to win matches and Miyu is the least important, least-personality having person of Neo Genesis. She used to have green hair but it was a nightmare so now she’s a dirty blonde with teal gear that has a gold pattern on it. Koguma is in multi-coloured gear that has white, orange, and blue, she looks like sorbet.
The Match: Miyu starts the match by doing the bear taunt and that seems to please Koguma and they both dance around a little bit. And Miyu tries to steal a pin and Koguma immediately gets her cradle and that’s 3.
**
Look, it was 30 seconds long and it gave us everything we could have wanted as I legitimately was fearing this match.
Saya Iida [2] vs. Tomoka Inaba [4] – Red Block B Match
Background: Saya is tiny but jacked up and does a lot of power spots, Tomoka is normal (joshi) sized and does karate and is very serious and severe and has a main-event look with braids and some hair that drapes over the face to let you know she’s stoic and emotionally withdrawn.
The Match: We start with a donnybrook as Saya charges and slugs it out with Inaba who fires off shots of her own, eventually it settles down and we get a good old-fashioned strike-off with Saya throwing big chops and Inaba throwing big kicks. Saya eventually wins the exchange with a flurry of chops into the ropes…and Inaba comes back with a kick flurry, but Saya gets the jumping chop, running back elbow, and jumping elbow drop to gain control. Iida’s lariat is ducked and Inaba goes to the arm with a bunch of fancy technical stuff until she goes for a Rings of Saturn type move. Saya makes the ropes but Inaba gets the Muay Thai knees and more big kicks set up a back and forth that ends with Saya reversing a brainbuster into one of her own. Saya lands the lariat next but Inaba gets a juji-gatame out of the pin attempt and then a triangle spot that ends with Saya powerbombing Inaba, and I’ll be honest…it’s one of the better “powerbomb somebody out of a triangle” spots I’ve seen. Crowd is hot for Saya and she gets a spinebuster and she pulls the straps down! Saya goes up and gets a diving shoulderblock! Saya goes for another lariat but runs into a boot and then another kick and then a big knee from Inaba who follows up with a Michinoku Driver and a buzzsaw kick and that’s 3.

I could have used more distinction and storytelling from it, but just “two people do some stuff that’s unique to both of them and it looks good” this was a very fine match.
Natsupoi [4] vs. Ruaka [1] – Red Block A Match
Background: Poi is white belt champion and an agile “ring fairy” who does lots of rollups and clever evasions, though recently she’s been wrestling a bit nastier with biting and small joint manipulation. Ruaka is a burly cheating heel that bludgeons people with luggage. It also seems that Ruaka is less interested in winning matches in the Five Star as much as she just wants to hurt people, as she’s the replacement for her stable leader and mentor, Natsuko Tora.
Background: Ruaka immediately gets the shoulderblock and takes Poi to the floor, whipping her into chairs and telling the fans to move out of the way and we get more Natsu-bowling. Back in and we get another shoulderblock and an arrogant cover and then some blatant choking as Ruaka is just brutalizing Poi here. Some rope choking but Poi gets space with an armbar, a cartwheel, and then a dropkick. Poi goes to follow up but gets tripped up by one of Ruaka’s stablemates and we get a brawl on the outside while Ruaka distracts the ref. Poi is thrown back inside for a cover while the ref (the incredible Daichi Murayama) chastises HATE For their interference while they act bashful and innocent. More basic heel stuff from Ruaka (Body slam! Standing splash!) and when Poi reverses a whip, Rina (the Pink Devil, a HATE member) runs in to trip up Poi while Ruaka once again distracts the ref and then shoulders down Natsupoi. This is cracking me up. A running senton and the ref won’t count the pin as he’s yelling at HATE ringside. Poi makes another comeback with a sleeper after reversing a fisherman’s buster, but Ruaka rams her into the corner to break, Poi ducks a charge, gets a superkick into the corner, a dropkick and then an inside-out dropkick to Ruaka who is leaning on the ropes. Poi fires up the crowd and climbs to the top and lands a crossbody and then an armbar after Ruaka kicks out. They transition into a triangle and Ruaka gets the powerbomb counter. Poi kicks a lariat attempt though, and attempts a German but is foiled and Ruaka gets the crossbody against the ropes. And is continuing to shake off her arm before getting the delayed fisherman’s buster. Ruaka goes for the chokebomb but Poi gets a victory roll for 2 and then they do a long rolling cradle sequence that Poi gets 3…but a piece of luggage is hurled at the ref to break it up. The ref once again goes at the people on the outside so Ruaka swings with the luggage…and Poi superkicks it out of the ring and lands a monster German suplex. Ruaka powders and we get a Poi plancha to wipe out HATE. Poi goes up again and Ruaka cuts her off and suplexes Natsu off the top turnbuckle, a powerbomb is loaded up but Poi gets a huracanrana into her armbar and when we get full extension Ruaka instantly taps.
***¾
This was tons of fun, but I’m a sucker for grotesque and over the top cheating. Natsupoi is a great seller and Ruaka’s offense is really improving. Great fun here.
Saki Kashima [0] vs. Hanan [3] – Blue Block B Match
Background: Saki is a lovable cowardly trickster vet who has stolen a ton of wins with her Kishikaisei (grounded crucifix pin she can hit from a million angles, it roughly means Revival so that’s what I call it, her ability to get it and ‘revive’ from a match has given her the nickname Zombie Girl)., Hanan is a blue-chipper who is coming into her own as an athletic, high-flying judoka who is on the cusp of really breaking out as a big star. Also, because this is important, Kashima is a huge Hokuto no Ken fan and is shilling something related to the franchise with a sign. Saki is slight and has reddish-black hair and black and red gear with a sort of ninja inspired fishnet sleeve. Hanan is blonde and athletic and has yellow gear with feathers on it, like she’s wearing Big Bird.
The Match: They both go for a handshake to start, and it’s Hanan getting the drop with an immediate attempt at a backdrop driver that Saki flips out of and lands The Revival for 2…and then rolls through and gets another Revival and that gets 3!
**½
I know I’m ranking these little short matches high but that’s just cause I love it and Saki’s psychology. She has one super move and is overall basically below average across the board, and Hanan tried to one-up by offering the sneaky handshake into a move (a Saki favorite) and it’s Hanan who ended up being bitten in the butt for her trickery. I like that Saki can be beaten if you’re honest, but if you try to cheat you’re in her world and will suffer for your sins.
Manami [3] vs. Yuna Mizumori [0] – Red Block A Match
Background: Manami is from Sendai, she’s hyper and a bit of a high-flyer and dresses in blue. Yuna is repping Cosmic Angels and she’s from the south of Japan so she’s tropical and likes pineapples and is a bit of a brawler/power worker who is dressed in a two-toned red and green outfit.
The Match: They circle around a bit before teasing a test of strength but Manami goes for the wrist instead and they work that. Yuna eventually gets free and lands a shoulderblock and then we get some rope running and Manami gets a monkey flip and a flying forearm and a dropkick and is screaming the entire way. And then Yuna screams in response. And Yuna just slugs down Manami and we get them duking it out with forearm shots and Yuna is uglying it up with some corner clotheslines. Manami powders and Yuna gets a more guts than skill plancha to take her out on the outside. That uh, could have gone bad. Back in and Yuna gets a diving shoulder and then a diving splash that eats knees. But Yuna fires back and gets the fireman’s carry driver anyway for 2.6. Running lariat gets 2.7! Yuna keeps piling it on with a reverse diving lariat out of the corner but Manami ducks and gets a Jumbo knee! Another but Yuna reverses the pin for 2. But Manami gets another knee and that gets 2.8. Manami climbs to the top and a diving splash gets 3.
**½
Totally fine, just perfectly fine. Nothing groundbreaking, but both are competent, Manami has some charisma, they played their part. It’s fine.
Syuri [2] vs. Anna Jay [2] – Blue Block A Match
Background: Syuri is the moral guardian of Stardom, purehearted, highly-skilled, she is a well-rounded wrestler with crazy ‘real’ fighting credibility and can basically do anything in the ring. Anna Jay is uh, not any of that but she is from AEW and some people are particular fans of certain aspects of her anatomy. Syuri is giving up some size and Anna is giving up everything else.
The Match: Some technical stuff to start with wristlocks and quick covers and a kick dodge and then we lockup and headlock and international and this is very…basic. Anna goes for her Queenslayer sleeper early but Syuri gets a jawbreaker and the do a bit in the corner that has Anna getting a neckbreaker in the ropes and then Anna chokes out Syuri with a boot…but Syuri fires up and we get a snap suplex and then an armbar. Anna makes the ropes and Throws a few forearms and she at least tries to sell the arm a bit. Syuri gets some Muay Thai knees and they do some run and gun and Syuri gets a German and Anna gets a reverse STO and goes back to the Queenslayer but Syuri gets the ropes, so Anna gets a Gory Bomb and then goes to the Queenslayer again. Syuri gets strikes to break free and then gets a hanging armbar off the ropes. Syuri with a diving famouser and a running knee for a 2 count but Anna gets a neckbreaker and the short-arm back kick before going back to the Queenslayer. They fall backwards and Syuri gets an armbar out of it and cranks in a few more before wrapping up Jay like a turkey and tapping her out.
**¼
Match of Anna’s career as Syuri lead her through spot by spot and moved everything very well, and Syuri sniffing out Anna continually going for the sleeper to reverse into her own hold? That’s worth a quarter star. Fine match and Syuri should get like **** of credit for it.
Konami [4] vs. Maika [2] – Red Block A Match
Background: Konami is an evil vicious heel who just turned and joined the super-stable of HATE, Maika got her belt stolen by HATE’s leader, Natsuko Tora. Konami is Asuka’s protege and uses strikes to set up a super submission and Maika is a strong judoka who will slam the heck out of you. Maika is in red and white and Konami is in black pleather.
The Match: They both dance around and are leery to give up position as they definitely are going for a Big Fight Feel here. They scramble on the mat and both tease holds until Konami gets an armbar and then a kick against the ropes when Maika breaks. But when Maika powders we get an exchange on the outside where Maika catches a kick and then Konami converts to an armbar and then she whips Maika with her belt and chokes her as the crowd boos. Konami tosses Maika into some chairs, slams her face against the wall, and then dog walks her back into the ring…but Maika gets a suplex off the apron and they both get a breather as they tease a double count out. Maika recovers her breath dramatically and then gets some running clotheslines into the corner and a scoop powerslam and a sliding lariat as she’s busting out all the big power moves. Cross-armed STO is attempted but Konami reverses into a choke and brings Maika down. Konami climbs, Maika cuts her off and we get an armbar on the top. Maika is tossed down and Konami gets the diving roundhouse kick, but after a 2 count Utami fires back with lariats for her own 2 count. Enka Otoshi attempt by Maika but Konami converts to a sleeper. Maika rams Konami into the corner and Konami gets the spraypaint in her hand. Maika avoids it, goes for the Himeka Bomb out of the corner, Konami slips out, Maika knocks the spraypaint away, Konami goes for an armbar…and Maika blocks it for a rollup for 3.
***¼
Nice finishing sequence and a good match all around. Maika has never landed super strong to me as a top face, but she worked underneath well and her offense is always super lovely to watch. Konami remains a dirtbag of acceptable quality but I still feel like peak level charisma is missing here. But beyond that, good match with a fun finish.
Risa Sera [0] vs. Suzu Suzuki [3] – Blue Block B Match
Background: So actually a lot of history here as Suzu broke into Stardom as part of a stable (Prominence) with Suzu. Suzu was very successful and stuck around and Risa remains a freelancer. They’re both deathmatch adjacent ladies with Suzu having a stronger technical side and Risa being the better brawler. Risa is in her blue, ice queen getup, and Suzu is in black and red and is larger than Risa.
The Match: Some respect from the ex-stablemates to start…and then Risa grabs the hair to throw some knees and then they go outside. Sera whips Suzu into some chairs and then some more chairs. Sera chokes Suzuki with a towel and they’re back in and Risa cranks on a crab and then gets a rocking horse. More hairpulling and a double knee drop on Suzu’s back as Risa is targeting the lumbar region. Suzu fires back with forearms and then a punt to the back and we get the run-up kick on the apron. Now it’s Risa’s turn to be flung into chairs. Suzu gets some water but then she misses a kick on the outside and Sera gets the air raid crash on the mats. Sera rehydrates and rolls Suzu back inside. Suzuki with more forearms but Sera gets her swinging air raid crash and then she cranks in the crab again. Suzu gets a kick out of that in a mildly contrived spot and then Suzuki gets a spear for a 2 count. Suzu transitions to an ornate leg-choke/armbar deal. Risa doesn’t really sell it like it’s all that dangerous and she just casually makes her way over to the ropes. Suzu gets some running knees into the corner but Risa counters with her own. This match is clunky. Risa gets a vader bomb style double knee drop and then drinks more water while stepping on Suzu’s throat. Suzu goes for a German suplex but Risa blocks it with a back elbow and after some struggling lands a Samoan driver for a 2 count and goes up, but Suzu cuts her off and they duke it out on the top rope. Super frankensteiner by Suzu and then a Tequlia Shot for 2.8. Suzu’s bridging German also only gets 2.9. Suzu signals for a moonsault (?!) and goes up but Sera cuts her off and lands a super air raid crash but that only gets a nearfall too. They slug it out but Risa gets a falcon arrow for 2 and then goes up for more diving knees…that miss. They trade rollups and Risa gets another air raid crash but Suzu kicks out at 1! Suzuki with a German and a buzzsaw kick. Sloppy kick sequence and a final air raid crash gets 3.
**¼
Some decent work in there but a fuzzy ending definitely takes the wind out of its sails. Weirdly not heated for a match between old partners and you have Sera cheating like mad, but Suzu makes up for it. I dunno, weird, maybe they need a stipulation or plunder to really break out but a bizarre match in how little chemistry there was.
Saori Anou [2] vs. Starlight Kid [2] – Blue Block A Match
Background: Saori is stoic and serious, Starlight is a bit goofier though she’s still finding her place as a babyface after a long run as a heel. No real heat here or history.
The Match: Lockup to start and some fancy wristlock reversals with SLK using the ropes to gain advantage. Saori eventually escapes and goes for a kick and we have a pose off. Rope running sets up a lucha sequence and then Kid goes for an Asai moonsault but Saori yanks her off the ropes and is working heel here I guess. And speaking of heels, it seems that Kid’s ankle got tweaked and when they go back inside Saori goes at the leg and sets up a South Asian Deathlock. Saori with a running kick to Starlight’s knee which is wrapped in the ropes. Kid eventually gets space with a flying headscissors and limps around trying to follow up. Reverse crossbody! But Kid can’t quickly take advantage and they do a float-over in the corner and when Kid lands on the apron she collapses in pain. Good work Kid, good work. Saori then kicks Kid on the apron, but the masked wrestler grabs Anou’s leg and tears it apart with a dragonscrew and a kneebreaker and then she gets the Black Tiger Leg Destroyer in the ring. Both of them are selling well and when Kid kicks the leg out of Saori’s leg Anou gets a boot of her own and they just shuffle around the mat kicking each other in a funny sequence. Saori gets the figure four and the bridge and Starlight is in agony! But we get the reversal, and now Saori screams in pain. And Saori reverses that and Kid makes the ropes. They trade fisherman’s suplexes next and the crowd goes banana. SLK goes up, Saori suplexes her off the top, Kid gets her own suplex, double-down. Kid with the low kick and then the leg lariat, but Saori gets a German suplex and then another one. Now Saori goes up and Kid cuts her off with a super victory roll. Saori powders so Kid gets the Asai moonsault and she’s rolling. Back in and we get running double knees to Saori’s back and then a top-rope moonsault that crashes and burns. Saori goes for the backslide but Kid reverses into her own rollup and then locks in the Black Tiger Leg Destroyer! Saori almost escapes with a cradle for 3. Kid goes for the Tiger Suplex but Saori gets the backslide again for 2.999. Anou locks in some choke/armbar deal and Kid makes the ropes. Kid tries to block a suplex with a cazadora but Saori blocks that and gets a wheelbarrow suplex, and then a Dragon suplex for 2.8. Anou signals to finish (and remembers to sell the knee again) and goes for her flipping DDT, but Kid blocks, gets the kneeling Michinoku Driver and the moonsault…as time expires.
***¼
A better ending or more consistent and I’d go higher for it, but alas. Saori is much better as a heel and Kid shows her babyface charisma off here. Good stuff and a fine story (even if they just stopped with the knee stuff halfway through).
Mayu Iwatani [4] vs. Momo Watanabe [0] – Red Block B Match
Background: Mayu is the ultimate babyface, Momo is one of their better heels. They have history and hate and this is going to be nasty as Mayu’s trickery and high-flying will be put to the test against the brutal kicks and suplexes of Momo. Mayu is the Icon of Stardom in her rainbow gear and Momo is the Black Peach in dark pleather and yellow.
The Match: Hot start as Momo boots Mayu off the apron and drags her outside and just bounces Mayu’s hate off random things. Momo looks absolutely giddy as she tosses Mayu through chairs and takes some water. And Iwatani reverses a whip and Momo takes a spill into the chairs! And Mayu follows with a tope! Back in and Mayu kicks away at Momo…until she gets tripped up by HATE and dragged outside to be stomped on while Momo distracts the ref by pretending she has a bad shoulder. Ruaka clobbering Mayu’s leg with the luggage is the highlight of the beating. Momo’s shoulder is now totally fine as she beats on Mayu, targeting the knee with kicks and elbow drops and a basic hold. Iwatani makes the ropes and Momo uses them to crank on Mayu’s leg some more while jawing with the ref. Momo sends Mayu running with a whip as Mayu does an awesome hopping, one-legged limp, but she uses the ropes to attempt a schoolgirl on Momo but blocks it and gets an awesome standing reverse figure four. Mayu makes the ropes again and when Momo tries another whip we get Mayu reversing into a headscissors and a dropkick, but when Iwatani goes up for a diving stomp Momo rolls away and the Icon of Stardom crashes and burns. But Momo runs into a superkick anyway and we have a double down. They get up and trade and block kicks until Momo takes out the knee and delivers a shotgun blast of a roundhouse to Mayu’s chest. Momo goes up, gets cut off and they fight on the top rope. Super frankensteiner from Mayu! Missile dropkick from Mayu who is remembering to be all wobble-legged after doing moves and she completes the flurry with a frog splash but she hits her knee and can’t cover immediately so Momo kicks out. Mayu with a dragon suplex attempt but Momo goes back to the leg to block it and then gets the inverted figure-four again. Mayu makes the ropes but Momo gets the somato (double knee strike) and then a diving somato! And then ANOTHER diving somato, and when Mayu kicks out Momo locks in the crossface chickenwing and when they fight to a standing position Momo tries for the Tequila Sunrise which Mayu blocks, but a nasty high kick drops Mayu and Momo goes for the Inverted B-Driver…but Mayu flips out of it and gets a Tombstone! Buzzsaw kick! And Mayu collapses into the corner as she uses the ropes to climb…moonsault…and it crashes and burns. Now Ruaka distracts the ref as Momo grabs the bat, a superkick rocks her but Mayu climbs again and Momo crushes Mayu’s leg with the bat, she’s in the tree of woe! Kick to the head! Tequila Sunrise! Another buzzsaw kick, and Mayu weakly kicks out at 2.8. Momo goes for the crossface chickenwing again, but Mayu makes the ropes…and is right next to where Momo discarded her bat. Mayu takes the bat, clocks Momo with it, and then gets the diving poison rana for 3. Awesome finish.
****
MOTT so far and a great dynamic. Momo is a nasty heel with awesome offense and tons of personality and Mayu is a great wobble-legged babyface. And the heel having their cheating turn against them for a loss? Great, great stuff.
