What the World Was Watching: WWF Superstars – March 6, 1993
By LScisco on 24 June 2024
WWF Mania had two exclusive matches on Saturday morning:
Typhoon (1-3) defeats Papa Shango (2-0) via disqualification when Shango shoots sparks into Typhoon’s eyes at 4:57:
There is serviceable, if limited, action between two big men in this contest, which was filmed in San Diego, California on February 16. Shango traps Typhoon in a chinlock and then bails before Typhoon’s comeback is established in earnest. He grabs his voodoo stick and shoots sparks into Typhoon’s eyes, getting disqualified. It is not good for Shango that he cannot beat Typhoon when other heels have made the former Tag Team champion their whipping boy. Rating: *
After the bell, Shango gives Typhoon a back suplex but Typhoon fights back. Shango leaves the ring before he is given a Tidal Wave.
Kim Chee defeats Jim Gorman via submission to a rear chinlock at 2:49:
Kim Chee is the Brooklyn Brawler (Steve Lombardi). The squash is meant to build him for a future bout against Kamala. The only entertaining thing about it is Lord Alfred Hayes and Sean Mooney talking about whether Kamala watches television. Kim Chee just uses chokes on the ropes and simple strikes to set up a rear chinlock finish.
Later in the day on Wrestling Spotlight there was a new squash match where Skinner (1-1-1) defeated Mike Starr with the Alligator Neckbreaker at 4:48.
WWF Superstars featured Vince McMahon, Jerry Lawler, and Randy Savage on commentary, taped from Long Beach, California. According to thehistoryofwwe.com, the new taping took place on February 15 and drew a crowd of 10,000 fans, 7,000 of whom paid for their tickets.
Opening Contest: Razor Ramon (6-1) pins Brian Boyer after the Razor’s Edge at 2:10:
Ramon demonstrates his lack of respect for Boyer by putting his toothpick behind his right ear as he wrestles the match. This is one of the squashes where Ramon’s high impact offense looked great because he outweighed his opponent by more than 100 pounds.
After showing footage of Tatanka’s recent successes against Intercontinental Champion Shawn Michaels, Tatanka does a taped promo about how he is going to fulfill a lifetime dream by taking Michaels’ title at WrestleMania.
Crush (6-0) beats Louie Spicolli via submission to the head vice at 2:23:
McMahon puts over Crush as a legend in his native Hawaii. There is more hype for Crush’s WrestleMania match with Doink as he crushes another enhancement talent.
Hacksaw Jim Duggan speaks to fans from his home. He keeps calling Yokozuna “Yokozuma” as he recounts last month’s angle and apologizes to fans for letting them down.
The Headshrinkers (w/Afa) (5-0) beat Gary Key & Davey Starr when Fatu pins Starr after the splash off the top rope at 2:46:
In the split screen, Afa does a translated promo about how the Headshrinkers are going to WrestleMania to tear the Steiner Brothers heads off. Afa is now carrying a shrunken head with him to the ring. The Headshrinkers abandon the backdrop-into-powerbomb spot, opting instead for a spike powerbomb on Starr en route to another win.
Ray Rougeau interviews WWF Champion Bret Hart. Bret continues billing himself as an underdog but saying that his reputation for excellently executing opponents will take him to victory. He adds that Yokozuna will respect him after their battle at WrestleMania. The WWF needs to put more heat on this program because right now Yokozuna’s feud with Hacksaw Jim Duggan is more interesting.
Bam Bam Bigelow (11-0) pins Brian West after the flying headbutt at 1:13:
Like Ramon, who wrestled earlier, Bigelow does not have a match scheduled for WrestleMania. He gets a quick win to keep him relevant in the meantime.
The Mega-Maniacs and Jimmy Hart accept the challenge of WWF Tag Team Champions Money Incorporated for a title match at WrestleMania. Hulk Hogan rips the bandage off Brutus Beefcake’s nose and Beefcake argues that the steel plates in his face withstood Irwin R. Schyster’s blow with a briefcase several weeks ago on Monday Night RAW. Hogan laughs and acts wild, acting like Beefcake’s titanium plated face is the greatest thing in wrestling.
Gene Okerlund does the WrestleMania IX Report. The WWF Tag Team Championship match is now billed as a “double main event” to go alongside the Bret Hart-Yokozuna WWF Championship match. Okerlund puts over how the show will have a Roman theme. Yokozuna and Mr. Fuji scream “Banzai” a lot in their promo. In the ring, Giant Gonzalez and Harvey Wippleman tell the Undertaker to “rest in peace.” Lex Luger talks of making a “perfect example” out of Mr. Perfect. And Perfect rebuts that Luger had better be built for go and not just for show.
The Steiner Brothers (8-0) beat Ed Moretti & Dan Farren when Scott pins Farren after the Frankensteiner at 2:13:
The fun story here is that Farren is Beau Beverly under a mask because the Steiners did not trust Augie Loya, who used Farren’s name at the last taping, to take the Frankensteiner. Aside from suplex, that is the only move that the Beverly Brother has to take. It is also funny for a masked wrestler to have a name because the purpose of a mask is to obscure one’s identity. After the match, Lawler uses the Royal Magistrator to draw a dog on the screen to make fun of the Steiner Brothers mother.
Tune in next week to see the Nasty Boys, Lex Luger, Tatanka, and Yokozuna in action! Also, the Mega-Maniacs will announce a big surprise for Money Incorporated next week!
The Last Word: This was a bad show that did not feature anything interesting. The loss of sweeps month means that there will be lots of squasherific episodes. That is tolerable so long as they are entertaining or are supported with a good interview or angle. However, today’s show featured generic action that was not worth going out of one’s way to see.
