Mike Books WWF Shotgun Saturday Night 8th May 1999

By Michael Fitzgerald on 28 February 2024

Happy Wednesday Everyone!

We’re continuing on with booking Shotgun. If you’ve been following these then I hope you’re enjoying them, and if you’d like to get up to date on previous editions you can do so by checking the archives. I will post a recap of last week’s show down below the break line as well.

Hopefully ya’ll have some fun whilst we book some Shotgun!

Last week on Shotgun;

Jacqueline defeated Tori

D-Lo Brown laid out a cocky Tiger Ali Singh to continue their feud

Too Much and The Hardy Boyz agreed to a climactic bout this week on Shotgun

The Road Dogg defeated Danny Inferno

Christian defeated Mideon thanks to the involvement of Val Venis

Owen Hart defeated TAKA Michinoku in an International Dream Match

And with you all brought up to speed, let’s move on to this week’s show!

This taping took place on the 27th of April 1999 from New Haven, Connecticut
Episode aired on the 8th of May 1999

Three Shows were held;

Super Astros Taping
https://www.cagematch.net/?id=1&nr=16283

Shotgun Taping
https://www.cagematch.net/?id=1&nr=36175

Smackdown Taping
https://www.cagematch.net/?id=1&nr=2071

Smackdown was just a special at this stage, but it would of course become a regular show later in the year. The Taping schedule will actually improve for the better when that happens in my view, as we’ll go to just Shotgun and Raw on one night and then Smackdown and HeAT on the next one, which should make these tapings a heck of a lot easier! Tonight we’ve got Scott Taylor working double duty as he was also on Super Astros, but I don’t want to hold off the match with The Hardyz till later, so Taylor is going to have to work twice or they’ll have to take him out of Super Astros. Christopher is supposed to wrestle Kurt Angle in a Dark Match as well, but I might ask if someone else can work with Angle tonight so that Christopher is fresh for the Main Event.

Show Intro

We get the opening credits and then the announce team run us through what we can expect to see on tonight’s edition of Shotgun.

Segment 1
Tiger Ali Singh at Titan Towers Part 1 of 5

We open up the show with the first of five segments over the course of the evening. Tiger Ali Singh has been infuriated by the insolence of D-Lo Brown recently, so he has decided to head to WWF Headquarters at Titan Towers in order to demand that Brown face consequences for his actions. However, upon first arriving at the building, Singh finds himself unable to evade the receptionist on the front desk. As Singh mulls over what to do, he sees Gillberg outside the building and an idea grips him.

Segment 2
Meat w/ Jacqueline, Terri Runnels and Ryan Shamrock Vs Prince Albert w/ Droz

Meat was essentially a muscular slave for the women with him, so he’s not going to be an especially big threat to a huge scary man like Albert. Meat will give his best effort, but in the end he will get kicked in the face and then Baldo Bombed in quick succession, leading to Albert picking up the clean win.

Segment 3
Tiger Ali Singh at Titan Towers Part 2 of 5

We see what Singh had in mind in the previous segment, as he has paid Gillberg and some nearby pedestrians to enter the lobby of Titan Towers performing Gillberg’s full entrance, complete with sparklers and fire extinguishers. This causes the receptionist and assorted security to be suitably distracted, thus allowing Singh to sneak by and enter the building. Singh now begins his search for Mr. McMahon so that he might be able to get D-Lo Brown fired for his insolence.

Segment 4
Monday Night Raw Recap

This is a segment reserved for recapping the notable events of the most recent episode of Raw, seeing as this is a weekend syndicated show at the end of the day, whilst Raw and HeAT are the main two shows of the week. This segment exists not only to recap the previous episode of Raw but also as a way to hype up and advertise any matches or segments that have been announced for the next episode.

Segment 5
Mideon, Viscera and Faarooq Vs Knuckles Nelson, Julio Sanchez and Russ Greenberg

This is a squash win for The Ministry, as they make reasonably easy work of the amassed enhancement talent, with Viscera putting the explanation point on things by flattening Sanchez with a Big Splash. However, The Ministry’s celebrations are cut short when Val Venis decides to add fuel to their existing issues by dragging Faarooq under the bottom rope and flinging him into the ring steps and then fleeing into the crowd before Mideon or Viscera can procure any revenge for their comrade. Venis may have just kicked a hornet’s nest with this behaviour!

Segment 6
Sunday Night HeAT Recap

This is a segment reserved for recapping the notable events of the most recent episode of HeAT, seeing as this is a weekend syndicated show at the end of the day, whilst Raw and HeAT are the main two shows of the week. This segment exists not only to recap the previous episode of HeAT but also as a way to hype up and advertise any matches or segments that have been announced for the next episode.

Segment 7
Tiger Ali Singh at Titan Towers Part 3 of 5

Singh continues his quest at Titan Towers, as this bizarre episode of Shotgun continues. Singh looks through different offices and rooms within Titan Towers, but continues to have no joy locating the boss. At one stage Singh stumbles into the writer’s room, where Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara ponder what items they can put on a pole for a future match on Raw. They turn around to see Tiger and question why he is there, before debating which one of them wrote this into the show in a breaking of the fourth wall. Singh simply shakes his head and leaves, thinking both of the writers to be crazy. Singh then passes by an office where Kamala, in full garb, is sending a fax whilst Kim Chee looks on. Singh ponders what is up with this place before continuing on with his search.

Segment 8
Pay Per View Centre

This is where we let Dok Hendrix hype up the upcoming pay per view. If any matches are already announced then he can hype them here, and if we’re still waiting for any of the real meat of the pay per view to be advertised then we can look back at previous events in order to pad the segment out.

Segment 9
Tiger Ali Singh at Titan Towers Part 4 of 5

Singh’s search continues, as he heads into the cafeteria, still unsure of where to find Mr. McMahon. In there Singh finds Jim Cornette berating a cashier because the commissary has run out of Sprite, which leads to an argument amongst Cornette, Pat Paterson, Gerald Brisco, Bruce Prichard (dressed as Brother Love, obviously) and Sgt. Slaughter, along with failed characters from the New Gen Era such as Doink, TL Hopper and The Goon. Singh recoils and exclaims “So this is where all of you ended up?!”, which leads to a gigantic food fight taking place in the canteen. Singh manages to flee that, but the hectic situation has raised the interest of security, who grab Singh and remove him kicking and screaming from the scene.

Segment 10
Two out of Three Falls
Too Much (Brian Christopher and Scott Taylor) Vs The Hardy Boyz (Matt and Jeff)

These two teams have been feuding for months and it’s time to bring things to an end so that we can move them off in different directions. Thus we’ve got a Two out of Three Falls match on this episode of Shotgun so that we can draw a line under things. Seeing as we’ve only got 13 Minutes to work with, and the fact that The Hardyz will soon be getting an actual push on the main shows, we’ll put The Hardyz over strong here on Shotgun, with them sweeping Too Much in two straight falls. The match won’t be a burial though, as Too Much will get plenty of offence and the first fall for The Hardyz will come from a roll-up by Matt onto Christopher mid-way through the contest when Too Much are in firm control. The second fall will be more decisive though, with The Hardyz running wild leading to Jeff flying off the top rope with a Swanton Bomb onto Taylor for the three count. The Hardyz have left no doubt as to who the better team is following this contest!

Segment 11
Live Event Centre

This is where Dok Hendrix hypes up the next big event coming to YOUR local area. So it’s a long day for the poor sod in the recording booth, but we need to slip that stuff in on the syndicated show.

Segment 12
Tiger Ali Singh at Titan Towers Part 5 of 5

Singh is flung out of Titan Towers Jazzy Jeff style by security, and yells at them about how they will be sorry about this, just as D-Lo Brown will be sorry when Singh finally gets to speak to Mr. McMahon. Speaking of Brown; he shows up to Titan Towers for a scheduled meeting with Jim Ross, leading to Singh and Brown getting into a heated argument. The argument is eventually interrupted by the beeping of a car’s horn, which causes Singh and Brown to turn around and notice a red faced Mr. McMahon in a convertible. McMahon yells at the two to move, as they happen to be standing in his parking space. They quickly do, which leads to McMahon stomping over in order to know the meaning of all this. Singh tries to put his case across, but McMahon yells at him to SHUT UP, as he’s heard about all of the chaos Singh has caused today and it’s brought him into the office when he should have been at home. McMahon books a match between Singh and Brown for next week on Shotgun, and adds that if Singh pulls a stunt like this again then he will be FIRED! Singh Vs Brown is a go for next week on Shotgun!!

End of Show

Most of Shotgun this week was dedicated to Tiger Ali Singh’s antics and the Main Event tag match, so whether those two aspects deliver will ultimately be the deciding factor on whether the episode as a whole comes in at a thumbs up or not. The stuff with Singh is the first time I’ve ever really tried doing a show long angle like that, but we’ve filled the segments with enough silliness in order to hopefully make them entertaining. Giving Too Much and The Hardyz 13 Minutes to play with should likely lead to a good match, and hopefully the Shotgun taping crowd are into seeing it.

Elsewhere; Albert gets himself a win and we keep Val Venis’ issues with The Ministry going for another week. Venis’ actions are a bit heelish, but he was never really a pure babyface and he’s at least messing with guys who are clearly full-on Heel, so the fans should get into seeing Venis cause The Ministry some misery and forgive his underhanded tactics somewhat. He is outnumbered at the end of the day, so hitting and running isn’t the worst technique to use and at least makes Venis look somewhat intelligent for being able to do damage and then avoid repercussions for it.

Anyway, that’s us done for another week. We’ll pick things up again next week and see where the stories take us.

Hopefully I’ll see you all next week for more Shotgun!
