What the World Was Watching: WWF Superstars – October 3, 1992

By LScisco on 15 January 2024

After 10 years of doing the Doomies, I’m stepping aside for the time being because I have not watched a lot of modern wrestling this year. However, the mantle is being taken up by Phredric. So if you wish to vote in the first phase of this year’s Doomies rank your top three selections (or up to three) in each of the following categories and e-mail it to [email protected].

Vince McMahon and Mr. Perfect provide commentary, concluding the tapings in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Gene Okerlund interviews Razor Ramon, who calls out Randy Savage’s knee injury and lack of gold. Ramon says Savage is out of his mind to want to fight him.

Opening Contest: Crush (15-0) defeats Dwayne Gill via submission to the head vice at 2:54:

In the split screen, Crush tells his fans “Aloha.” Crush beats Gill inside and outside of the ring, playing to the crowd between moves. A tilt-a-whirl backbreaker sets up the head vice as Crush squashes Gill for the second time this year. Even though Crush is getting a singles push on television, the WWF was considering putting him back in a tag team with Animal as a new Legion of Doom. The problem is that doing that would give Crush a third gimmick alteration this year and that would be too many.

Nailz (14-0) beats Gus Kantarakis via submission to the chokehold sleeper at 2:01:

The crowd does not react as Nailz chokes Kantarakis with his hands and boots before hitting a clothesline and applying the chokehold sleeper. After the bell, Nailz beats up Kantarakis with a nightstick, which is cut off to get to the next segment.

A replay of the Bob Backlund vignette from Wrestling Challenge airs.

A replay of Kamala running through the crowd at the end of last week’s show when he saw Paul Bearer wheel a casket to ringside is shown.

The Undertaker (w/Paul Bearer) (27-0) pins Von Krus after the Tombstone at 1:43:

Von Krus is no match for the Undertaker, who eats a Tombstone after spending some time tied in the ropes.

Repo Man (21-7) defeats Laverne McGill via submission to the single leg Boston Crab at 3:47:

Perfect has some good lines during the squash, calling Repo a man who loves the night and a master of disguise. McMahon notes that the main event of Survivor Series will be announced on next week’s show. This squash serves to reheat Repo Man a bit after he lost to Bret Hart on Prime Time Wrestling. He spends a good deal of time beating up McGill in the corner and throws as many kicks as one would find in a Bruce Lee karate movie. The submission finish comes after close to four minutes and after the bell, Repo Man ties McGill in the ropes with his tow rope, leg dropping the jobber on he back of the head.

Footage from the end of last year’s Survivor Series match between Roddy Piper and Ric Flair’s teams is shown. Since it was arguably the worst finish to an elimination match in the history of the pay-per-view it is hardly an endorsement of the concept.

Non-Title Match: The Natural Disasters (WWF Tag Team Champions) (23-1) defeat Bob Bradley & Barry Horowitz when Typhoon pins Bradley after the Tidal Wave at 4:42:

Money Incorporated, with Jimmy Hart, do an insert promo about they are going to be tag team champions again. Perfect wonders what that means for the Nasty Boys. Typhoon weakens Horowitz with a test of strength and Horowitz has some funny spots of working up a head of steam and screaming only to run into the wall of Typhoon’s girth. Earthquake takes exception when Bradley goes after Typhoon’s eyes, tagging in and tearing into him. Like Repo Man’s squash, this went on too long but it did have funny spots.

Okerlund tracks down Jimmy Hart, coming across WWF President Jack Tunney, who is on the phone. Hart talks out both sides of his mouth by saying that both of his teams could beat the Natural Disasters. When Okerlund presses him on which team is going to get a title shot, he retreats into the men’s restroom and Okerlund follows.

Rick Martel (23-5-3) defeats Ross Greenberg via submission to the Boston Crab at 3:13:

In the split screen, Martel talks about how he is busy because fashion designers keep calling him to model for them. Martel’s program with Shawn Michaels is over and he is not carrying Tatanka’s eagle feathers around so it is uncertain whether that feud is continuing or Martel is being primed for something else. Martel rams Greenberg into the ring post, avoids a dropkick from his opponent in the ring, and does the backbreaker-Boston Crab combination for his 24th win of the year.

Tune in next week to see Bret Hart, Razor Ramon, Kamala, and Nailz in action! There will also be an announcement of the Survivor Series main event!

The Last Word: This show started fine with the quick Razor Ramon promo but then lost its way with some long, boring squash matches. The build to Survivor Series will start next week so that will give the product some momentum as the company enters the last quarter of 1992.
