What the World Was Watching: WWF Superstars – September 12, 1992
By LScisco on 25 December 2023
I hope everyone is having a Merry Christmas today!
Footage is shown of Razor Ramon attacking Randy Savage and helping Ric Flair regain the WWF Championship from Randy Savage. No graphic says where this match took place or when so this was a stunning and disorienting event for fans to process.
Vince McMahon and Mr. Perfect call the action, concluding the taping in Huntsville, Alabama. Perfects talks about how excited he is about Flair regaining the WWF Championship.
Opening Contest: Razor Ramon (5-0) defeats Gary Jackson after the crucifix powerbomb at 2:36:
Ramon seems headed for a quick win but he struggles to get Jackson up for the crucifix powerbomb, covering for it by ramming Jackson into the turnbuckles. As Perfect gloats about the success of Plan B, McMahon tells fans that they can watch the full title change on Prime Time this week. Ramon does his trademark moves and then gets Jackson up for crucifix powerbomb. After the squash, Ramon admires the finish in the video screen and says no one can beat him.
Gene Okerlund does a report from an empty arena in Hershey, Pennsylvania and identifies it as the location of the WWF title change. Okerlund argues that the damage Savage sustained at SummerSlam to his knee weakened him for the match and that he had a confrontation with Razor Ramon during a pre-match interview, where Ramon told him that he needed lessons in “machismo” and hit Ramon in the face when he spit his toothpick on him. Footage of the title match is shown with Savage wrestling on a bad knee and having Ramon come to ringside and take it out, allowing Flair to win the title via pinfall to the figure-four leglock. After the match, Ramon got in the ring and kicked and slapped Savage. Savage was unable to make it to the dressing room so the Ultimate Warrior came out and carried him away. Ramon does a locker room promo about how Savage is dirt underneath his fingernails.
Non-Title Match: The Natural Disasters (WWF Tag Team Champions) (20-1) beat Doug Somers & Joe Turner when Typhoon pins Turner after the Tidal Wave at 2:27:
Turner started his in-ring career in 1957 and was a noted tag team wrestler in Southern promotions. One of his noted teams was with Bill Bowman. The duo donned masks and wrestled as the Interns along the Gulf Coast, winning tag team titles for Gulf Coast Championship Wrestling (GCCW) four times. He also held the Alabama-based Tri-State Wrestling Tag Team Championship with Dennis Condrey in the mid-1970s. By the 1980s his appearances were as an enhancement talent for GCW and Mid-Atlantic before doing a few for the WWF in 1991 and 1992.
McMahon puts over how the Nasty Boys and Money Incorporated have legitimate claims to being in line for tag team title matches. Somers tries to intercede before Turner is avalanched by both Disasters but referee Earl Hebner keeps him at bay. Somers intercedes after the move but gets double shoulder blocked and Turner is finished off after that.
Papa Shango (21-0) pins Justin Taylor after the reverse shoulderbreaker at 2:20:
McMahon complains that Randy Savage never had a chance in his title defense against Ric Flair and that the Ultimate Warrior will decimate Flair when he gets his hands on him. Shango rolls through another tedious squash match and his skull shoots fire after his win.
The Big Bossman (16-1-1) defeats Mike Sharpe after the Bossman Slam at 3:22:
The squash drags out longer than it has to because Sharpe takes several powders to break up the Bossman’s offense. After a backdrop, the Bossman gets the pin with the Bossman Slam and handcuffs Sharpe to the ropes so he can pose for the crowd. The Bossman has been back for more than a month and he has yet to confront Nailz, which is quickly cooling off the heat of their feud.
Ric Flair and Mr. Perfect pop champagne in the locker room and Bobby Heenan joins them for the celebration. They tell the audience that they told them that Flair would be WWF champion again. Razor Ramon also joins, laughing about what happened to Savage and telling Flair that the title looks good on him.
The Nasty Boys (w/Jimmy Hart) (20-1) beat Greg Brown & Red Tyler when Brian Knobbs pins Brown after a double DDT at 3:18 shown:
There is a commercial break during the squash, which is odd. The Nasties jaw with fans at ringside in the middle of beating up their opponents and they win with a double DDT. That does not have the same punch as their Trip to Nastyville finish but it is much easier for both men to perform.
The Undertaker (w/Paul Bearer) (24-0) pins Pat Rose after the Tombstone at 2:10:
Rose does not take a good chokeslam bump and tries to make up for it by unleashing a shower of spit in the corner when the Undertaker chokes him. McMahon talks up the Undertaker’s feud with Kamala, so that program is continuing into the fall. After winning, the Undertaker and Bearer stuff Rose in a body bag.
Tune in next week to see Tatanka face the Mountie! Also, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels will be in action! And there will be a special interview with Randy Savage!
The Last Word: Obviously the big news was the WWF title change, bringing an end to Randy Savage’s second run at the top. Savage winning the belt at WrestleMania was a great moment but he did nothing notable with it and lost his one big televised title defense to the Ultimate Warrior at SummerSlam. Allowing Razor Ramon to be a sidekick of Ric Flair immediately elevates his status on the card and gives his program with Savage an edge that it would not otherwise have had as fighting over “machismo” only goes so far.
