What the World Was Watching: WWF Superstars – September 5, 1992
By LScisco on 20 December 2023
Vince McMahon narrates footage of SummerSlam, relaying the results of the WWF title match, Intercontinental title match, and the Undertaker’s clash with Kamala.
Vince McMahon and Mr. Perfect are hosting the show, still taped from Huntsville, Alabama.
Opening Contest: The Legion of Doom (w/Paul Ellering) (16-1) beat Gary Jackson & Jerry Stevens when Hawk pins Stevens after the Doomsday Device at 2:24:
Ellering talks to Rocco about an IQ test at ringside as Animal powerslams Stevens and gives him a stiff clothesline in the corner to set up the Doomsday Device. This would be the Legion’s last match on American television for a little more than three years as Hawk quit the company after SummerSlam. It was probably for the best as the only person amused by the Rocco bit was McMahon.
Nailz (12-0) beats Tommy Stevenson via submission to the chokehold sleeper at 1:53:
The crowd does not react much to Nailz until he does the post-match beatdown with the nightstick, working up a chant for the Big Bossman. The Bossman does not come out, though.
Crush (13-0) defeats Kato (0-16) via submission to the head vice at 2:20:
Crush does an insert promo about how lots of people do not know he is from Hawaii and his hands are going to take him to the top of the WWF. What makes this bit funny is that most people did not know he was from Hawaii because the WWF to this point was billing him from Oregon. So it seems like now Crush’s gimmick will be a fun, powerful big guy from the 50th state. Kato was Crush’s opponent for his debut and he is squashed again.
The Mountie (w/Jimmy Hart) (17-4) pins Ken Wayne after a piledriver at 2:09:
The best bit in the squash is Wayne getting impressive hang time on a backdrop. Perfect claims it is the best he has ever seen. After the Mountie wins, he antagonizes the crowd by singing his theme song and runs Wayne out of the ring with the Great American Scream Machine.
Razor Ramon calls out WWF Champion Randy Savage, saying that there is only one man who is oozing machismo in the WWF.
Virgil (19-5) defeats Barry Horowitz after the side Russian leg sweep at 3:05:
The WWF needs to rebuild Virgil after he was squashed by Nailz at SummerSlam. McMahon argues that Ric Flair is not happy with Perfect after the plan to get Randy Savage or the Ultimate Warrior to turn never happened at SummerSlam. Horowitz puts up a small fight but not enough to be a threat. Virgil hits a side Russian leg sweep out of nowhere to get back on the winning side of the ledger.
Money Incorporated (w/Jimmy Hart) (20-2) beat Bert Stiles & Warren Quinn when Ted DiBiase submits Quinn after the Million Dollar Dream at 3:09:
Perfect insists to McMahon that he and Flair have another plan to regain the WWF Championship. There is also hype for Body Stars and how country music star Billy Ray Cyrus is making an appearance. Money Incorporated easily beat down their opponents, with Quinn taking the Write Off before he is submitted with the Million Dollar Dream.
Tune in next week to see the Big Bossman, the Nasty Boys, the Undertaker, Razor Ramon, and WWF Tag Team Champions the Natural Disasters in action! And find out what is going on with Ric Flair and Mr. Perfect’s Plan B!
The Last Word: Since this taping was done before SummerSlam one cannot expect any groundbreaking angles to occur until the next taping. Still, there were some minor pivots as Crush got a new spin on his character and Razor Ramon called out Randy Savage to lay the foundation for a program between the two. The Savage-Ramon pairing means that Ric Flair will be probably be working a program with the Ultimate Warrior to wrap up the year.
