What the World Was Watching: WWF Wrestling Challenge – August 23, 1992
By LScisco on 8 December 2023
Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan provide commentary for the last episode of the taping cycle in Portland, Maine.
Opening Contest: Tatanka (25-0) pins Skinner (8-9-1) after the Samoan Drop at 3:37:
Skinner gets no entrance, a reflection of his low position on the card. In the split screen, the Berzerker and Mr. Fuji tell Tatanka that they cannot wait to rip his throat and hair out. These two had a good match in Europe but this one suffers from a lack of time. Skinner goes back to using his alligator claw as a weapon but Tatanka catches him with a fist to the gut when he flies off the top rope. Tatanka goes onto the war path after that and Skinner fails to answer. Rating: *
Lord Alfred Hayes’ Special Report has a replay of the taped promos from WWF Champion Randy Savage and the Ultimate Warrior from Superstars.
The Mountie (w/Jimmy Hart) (16-4) pins Tim McMeany after a piledriver at 1:58:
The WWF is struggling to get McNeany’s name right, going with an extra “m” today. Heenan breaks the news about the SummerSlam Spectacular tag team match that will pit Savage and the Warrior against the Nasty Boys and Monsoon is so surprised that he walks out to call WWF President Jack Tunney. After annoying the crowd by singing his theme song and yelling, the Mountie opts to finish the squash with a piledriver instead of a dropkick. Afterward, he threatens with the Great American Scream Machine.
High Energy (13-1) beat the Brooklyn Brawler & Mike Sharpe when Owen Hart pins Sharpe after a Koko B. Ware missile dropkick at 2:16:
Monsoon returns after calling Tunney, refusing to apologize to Heenan for doubting his initial report. Ware spends a brief period in peril after a blind charge eats buckle and then Owen clears the ring and lifts Sharpe for Ware’s missile dropkick.
Gene Okerlund interviews High Energy after their return from the ring. Okerlund asks Owen about the SummerSlam Intercontinental title match, with Owen saying it will hurt the family. Ware also acts concerned.
The Berzerker (w/Mr. Fuji) (13-2) beats Jerry Seavey via count out at 1:52:
The crowd reacts to nothing during the squash, a bad sign for the Berzerker after he got a small push after WrestleMania against the Undertaker.
Virgil’s squash from Prime Time Wrestling is shown.
Okerlund does the SummerSlam Report. Ric Flair and Mr. Perfect say that the negotiations for Perfect’s services continue and they will be arriving in England on a Concorde. Rick Martel argues that his face belongs on Mount Rushmore and promises a wrestling lesson for Shawn Michaels. Michaels, with Sensational Sherri, rebuts that he will stick to the stipulation and not punch Martel in the face.
Razor Ramon (4-0) pins Joe Steel after the crucifix powerbomb at 2:21:
Ramon runs through his big moves with Heenan repeating how impressed he is with Ramon’s finish.
The Nasty Boys and Jimmy Hart are excited to face Randy Savage and the Ultimate Warrior later tonight. The former tag team champions promise to take their opponents on a trip to Nastyville from which they will not return.
The Last Word: There was the generic hype for SummerSlam on this show, as well as reminding fans about the SummerSlam Spectacular special later in the evening. It was a skippable show if fans had already tuned into Superstars.
