Mike Books WWF Shotgun Saturday Night 23rd January 1999

By Michael Fitzgerald on 22 November 2023

Happy Wednesday Everyone!

We’re continuing on with booking Shotgun. If you’ve been following these then I hope you’re enjoying them, and if you’d like to get up to date on previous editions you can do so by checking the archives. I will post a recap of last week’s show down below the break line as well.

Hopefully ya’ll have some fun whilst we book some Shotgun!

Last week on Shotgun;

Droz squashed Khris Germany and then bragged about how he had managed to worm his way into LOD 2000 and almost usurped Hawk

The Road Warriors did a sit-down interview saying that they would seek out revenge on Droz

Gangrel squashed Rob Begnaud

Tiger Ali Singh managed to sneak past Papi Chulo with a pin reversal

Val Venis defeated Edge in a competitive outing

Ken Shamrock and The Big Boss Man retained their WWF Tag Team Titles against Bob Holly and Scorpio, although the challengers had a couple of chances to bring the belts home to The J.O.B Squad

And with you all brought up to speed, let’s move on to this week’s show!

This taping took place on the 11th of January 1999 from Houston, Texas
Episode aired on the 23rd of January 1999

Show Intro

We get the opening credits and then the announce team run us through what we can expect to see on tonight’s edition of Shotgun.

Segment 1
The Road Warriors (Hawk and Animal) Vs Kit Carson and Chris Young

Carson and Young are sacrificial lambs here, as we turn back the clock with a classic AWA/NWA styled Road Warrior squash match. Carson and Young will be quickly disposed of and The Roadie’s will grab a mic following the slaughter and issue out threats to Droz in order to continue that feud. The eventual payoff is that Hawk wants a singles match with Droz next week (partially because Droz doesn’t have a partner and also because in real-life I don’t think Animal was allowed to work singles matches at the time due to some sort of insurance settlement with Lloyds of London).

4 Minutes Total for Segment. 1 Minute for the match. 3 Minutes for Entrance and Post-Match promo
5 Minutes Total for Taping out of an available 45

Segment 2
Sunday Night HeAT Recap

This is a segment reserved for recapping the notable events of the most recent episode of HeAT, seeing as this is a weekend syndicated show at the end of the day, whilst Raw and HeAT are the main two shows of the week. This segment exists not only to recap the previous episode of HeAT but also as a way to hype up and advertise any matches or segments that have been announced for the next episode.

7 Minutes total for Taping out of an available 45

Segment 3
Tiger Ali Singh Vs Bob Holly

This match follows the same formula as other matches that Tiger has had in the past month, as he insults the crowd prior to the match in order to build up some heat, leading to his babyface opponent to grab the mic. However, rather than giving a verbal repost, Holly simply bonks Tiger on the head with the mic and the match begins. Holly gives Tiger the sort of kicking you expect from grumpy Bob Holly, with it looking like Tiger’s mouth has finally written a cheque that his body can’t cash. However, when things seem bleakest for Tiger, he’s able to get a rope assisted pin for the three count and then bolts before Holly can dish out any payback.

7 Minutes Total for Segment. 4 Minutes for the Match. 3 Minutes for Entrances and Pre-Match promos
14 Minutes Total for Taping out of an available 45

Segment 4
Monday Night Raw Recap

This is a segment reserved for recapping the notable events of the most recent episode of Raw, seeing as this is a weekend syndicated show at the end of the day, whilst Raw and HeAT are the main two shows of the week. This segment exists not only to recap the previous episode of Raw but also as a way to hype up and advertise any matches or segments that have been announced for the next episode.

Segment 5
Angle with The Godfather, The Oddities (Kurrgan, Golga, George Steele and Giant Silva) and Too Much (Brian Christopher and Scott Taylor)

This is supposed to be a singles match between The Godfather and Kurrgan, however Godfather suggests that instead of wrestling one another, Kurrgan can just take some of Godfather’s ladies out on the town and Godfather can win by forfeit. Kurrgan mulls it over, and then agrees, leading to much joviality! However, before everyone can head to the back, Too Much interrupt and complain that all of this is a waste of time and that the focus should be on them. After some verbal sniping, Godfather and The Oddities team up to send Too Much packing, with George Steele even snacking on a turnbuckle pad in the process. Godfather and The Oddities all dance and have fun whilst Too Much skulk away. Hey, I know I’ve kind of ripped off the fans when it comes to delivering an announced match here, but be honest, would any of you really WANT to see these two wrestle one another?

Segment 6
Pay Per View Centre

This is where we let Dok Hendrix hype up the upcoming pay per view. If any matches are already announced then he can hype them here, and if we’re still waiting for any of the real meat of the pay per view to be advertised then we can look back at previous events in order to pad the segment out.

2 Minutes for Segment
24 Minutes Total for Taping out of an available 45

Segment 7
Goldust Vs Khris Germany

Germany got walloped by Droz on last week’s show in order to continue the storyline between Droz and The Road Warriors, so we’ll actually give him a more semi-competitive bout this week with Goldust. Goldust will still pick up the win, but it won’t be absolute Squashville and Germany will get to do a little bit before getting put away clean. This lets Germany have a bit more of a showcase whilst also getting Goldust on TV and giving him a win to pad his record.

4 Minutes Total for Segment. 3 Minutes for the match. 1 Minute for Goldust’s entrance (Germany already in the ring)
28 Minutes Total for Taping out of an available 45

Segment 8
Pre-Taped sit-down interview with Droz. Jim Cornette as the interviewer

In a more sedate setting, and with slightly more time to play with rather than a regular pre-tape, Droz and Cornette are able to go over the past few months so that Droz can explain what he hoped to achieve by taking Hawk’s place in the team. Droz says that he played both Road Warriors like a fiddle, and that his goal was to find greater fame as a member of LOD 2000 before sticking a knife in Animal’s back when the time was right, thus making him the man that took out The Road Warriors once and for all. Droz closes by saying that he accepts Hawk’s challenge and the two will wrestle next week.

31 Minutes Total for Taping out of an available 45

Segment 9
The Acolytes (Bradshaw and Faarooq) Vs The Disciples of Apocalypse (Skull and 8-Ball)

This is a good old fashioned “Smash Mouth Slobberknocker” as good old JR would say, as these two teams clobber one another until it’s time for The Acolytes to pin a DOA member with their trademark Spiked Powerbomb tag finisher. Both of these teams are Heels, but DOA can be the ostensible babyfaces for the evening, with a little bit of heat on one until it’s time for the hot tag. This is more a way for giving The Acolytes a battling clean win than it is to really do anything with DOA, but if you beat a nobody then you’ve beaten nobody, so DOA will be competitive in order to avoid looking like enhancement guys here. The match probably won’t be amazing, but it should be an inoffensive slugfest for the most part.

7 Minutes Total for Segment. 5 Minutes for the match. 2 Minutes for Entrances
38 Minutes Total for Taping out of an available 45

Segment 10
Live Event Centre

This is where Dok Hendrix hypes up the next big event coming to YOUR local area. So it’s a long day for the poor sod in the recording booth, but we need to slip that stuff in on the syndicated show.

1 Minute for Segment
39 Minutes Total for Taping out of an available 45

Segment 11
Gangrel Vs The Blue Meanie

The Brood and The J.O.B Squad were having their issues around this timeframe, so this is just a continuation of that, with Gangrel representing the former whilst Meanie is repping for the latter. It’s not the world’s most thrilling Main Event, but it’s a competitive match to close us out with Gangrel picking up the clean win with an Implant DDT. I like both of these wrestlers too so I’ll always try and find them something if I can.

6 Minutes Total for Segment. 4 Minutes for the match. 2 Minutes for Entrances
45 Minutes Total for Taping out of an available 45

End of Show

We’ve continued to advance the Droz and Road Warriors feud this week, which is the main storyline carrying the show at the moment, whilst Tiger Ali Singh is the secondary most focused issue. I think we moved forward those two particular stories okay, as we’re going at a slightly more relaxed pace with them than you might usually see during the Attitude Era. Aside from that, we’ve got some clean wins for guys like Goldust, The Acolytes and Gangrel, whilst also hiding the fact that most of The Oddities. with the exception of John Tenta, can’t actually wrestle, by putting them in a wacky angle instead that will have hopefully entertained the crowd. I feel like this would be a relatively easy watch for 45 minutes, but feel free to state otherwise if you think I’m out to lunch with that. I’ve still not really looked at WHERE I’d be putting the commercials during these shows actually, just that I need to set aside roughly 15 minutes for them, so if you work in TV and have some insight in that, then please feel free to share in the comments below.

Hopefully I’ll see you all next week for more Shotgun!
