Vince McMahon and Mr. Perfect call today’s action, still taped from Amarillo, Texas. Perfect says Randy Savage might be the third-best technician in the WWF but he and Ric Flair have something that will distract Savage for WrestleMania.
Opening Contest: Bret Hart (5-0-1) beats Ed Robinson via submission to the Sharpshooter at 1:45:
Robinson, who also sports pink tights, looks like a lankier version of Arn Anderson. In the split screen, Intercontinental Champion Roddy Piper says he is meaner than Bret and that gives him an advantage for their WrestleMania match. After the second rope elbow drop, Bret locks in the Sharpshooter for a fifth-straight win.
Gene Okerlund’s Update segment notes how this year’s WrestleMania has a double main event.
Tatanka (3-0) defeats B.A. Dalton after a Samoan drop at 1:28:
Tatanka races to the ring like the Ultimate Warrior to do a Native American dance in the ring before the squash. That is a nice touch to help the character stand out. He also does an insert promo hyping his character, saying that the wisdom of tribal elders will take him to the top of the WWF. After a flying chop off the second rope, Tatanka wins another squash with a Samoan drop.
Ted DiBiase & Irwin R. Schyster defeat Larry Williams & Jimmy James after IRS pins Williams after the Write Off at 3:29:
DiBiase and IRS were already tag team champions as of the airing of this squash but the WWF had not yet acknowledged that title switch on television. Before the squash, IRS says that all things are bigger in Texas, including people avoiding their taxes. The pairing of DiBiase and IRS brings an end to their respective feuds with El Matador and the Big Bossman without much fanfare. McMahon and Perfect put over the abilities of the heels as they wear down their jobber opponents. Unlike most star-star teams, DiBiase and IRS work in some double teams. The finish is DiBiase putting Williams in the Million Dollar Dream and releasing the hold so that IRS can come in and win with the Write Off. After the bell, DiBiase shoves $100 into Williams’ mouth before retrieving it.
McMahon and Perfect talk about some WrestleMania moments from the past.
Okerlund does the WrestleMania VIII Report. Sid Justice tells Hulk Hogan to ask Brutus Beefcake what it feels like to be hunted and vulnerable. Hogan rebuts that Sid betrayed all the Hulkamaniacs and he is out to fight for them. WWF Champion Ric Flair and Perfect wonder what makes Randy Savage a man, macho, or savage and say that they know something Savage does not. Savage fires back that he has been given a golden opportunity to win back the WWF title and he will capitalize on it.
A replay of the Randy Savage-Jake Roberts match from Saturday Night’s Main Event is shown. Included is post-broadcast footage of Roberts waiting behind the curtain with a steel chair as Savage and Elizabeth walk backstage. Roberts gets ready to tee off on whomever comes through the curtain first but before he can do so, the Undertaker grabs the chair and Savage grabs a nearby chair and waffles Roberts in the back. The Undertaker and Paul Bearer look down at Roberts as WWF officials pull Savage away.
Tune in next week to see Papa Shango, the New Foundation, Hacksaw Jim Duggan & Sergeant Slaughter, and the Repo Man in action! Also, Jake Roberts will appear on the Funeral Parlor and more matches will be announced for WrestleMania VIII!
The Last Word: Ted DiBiase moving into the tag team ranks is strange after he has been a single for his entire WWF run but it was a good shift since there was little left for him to do in that capacity. The Undertaker’s save of Randy Savage and Elizabeth after Saturday Night’s Main Event begins a babyface turn, something that segments of the fan base have been clamoring for since the end of the previous year. Ric Flair and Mr. Perfect also have something up their sleeve for Savage, which should be revealed soon because at present the Flair-Savage match just feel like WrestleMania filler and there is not much to the program, as shown in the promos during the WrestleMania Report segment.
