What the World Was Watching: WWF Superstars – November 16, 1991

Rants

Vince McMahon, Roddy Piper, and Randy Savage are doing commentary, still taped from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Piper urges WWF President Jack Tunney to reinstate Savage so he can compete at Survivor Series.

The Rockers’ squash from Prime Time Wrestling is the first match on today’s show.

Gene Okerlund’s Update recaps how Ric Flair targeted Jim Neidhart’s leg last week and how Neidhart was also beaten up by the Beverly Brothers. Okerlund announces that Neidhart is now unable to compete at Survivor Series. The Beverlys and the Genius say they are not sorry for what happened to Neidhart because he got in their way.

Repo Man (1-0) defeats Reno Riggins via submission to a leg grapevine at 1:04:

Repo Man beats down Riggins and submits him in a little more than a minute. After the match, he chop blocks Riggins and ties him in the ropes. The problem with this post-match gimmick is it takes Repo Man a while to tie Riggins in the ropes. After doing that, he picks Riggins up by his hair several times and slams his head into the canvas, all while he reminds people to pay their bills.

Sergeant Slaughter leads an elementary class through the “Pledge of Allegiance” and then kisses the American flag, saying that he has his country back. In response, students run up to Slaughter and hug him, finally bringing these vignettes to a close.

Irwin R. Schyster (19-1-3) beats Greg Valentine (18-7-3) via disqualification when the Big Bossman interferes at 3:39:

No one mentions that this is a SummerSlam rematch. Valentine pulverizes IRS with strikes until IRS rolls to the floor. When Valentine tries to follow, IRS whips him into the steps and takes control in the ring with a chinlock. Valentine fights out and chops IRS in the corner, but a fight over an Irish whip bumps the referee. That allows IRS to hit Valentine in the back with his briefcase and cover. Before the referee can count to three, though, the Bossman runs down and pulls IRS off, producing a disqualification. IRS should have just won after the briefcase shot but the WWF is protecting Valentine despite him being a glorified JTTS at this point. Rating: *

After the match, IRS runs away rather than fight with the Bossman. The Bossman lifts Valentine’s hand in victory even though Valentine lost.

Okerlund does the Survivor Series Report. Okerlund says WWF President Jack Tunney will make an announcement about Savage’s reinstatement by the end of the show. The Big Bossman and WWF Tag Team Champions the Legion of Doom express their impatience with Tunney because they need to know if they are going to have to face Jake Roberts’ team with three members. The Undertaker and Paul Bearer tell WWF Champion Hulk Hogan that he is running out of time before they walk away with his title, soul, and Hulkamaniacs. Ric Flair’s squad tell Roddy Piper’s team that there are less than two weeks before they meet their end.

Tunney announces that Savage’s reinstatement has been taken under advisement again.

The Natural Disasters (w/Jimmy Hart) (14-0) beat Burt Stiles & Tom Stone when Earthquake pins Stone after the Earthquake Splash at 1:48:

The Disasters do their formulaic squash, vanquishing Stone with both of their finishers. As this happens, McMahon questions Savage about whether he really wants to get back in the ring, but Savage says he does.

WWF Champion Hulk Hogan is a guest on the Funeral Parlor. Hogan checks the casket that has been made for him, but no one is in it. He goes to check the wooden one on the set but Ric Flair interrupts before he can do so. Flair tells Hogan that he has burst the bubble that Hogan has been living in, arguing that he is going to run wild on him. Hogan rips his shift off and yells at Flair as the Undertaker comes out of the wooden casket and smashes Hogan in the back of the head with the urn. The Undertaker chokes Hogan as Flair poses with both title belts until Piper and Savage make the save with chairs. Flair forgets to sell Piper’s chairshot at first, but eventually flees. The Undertaker does not sell Savage’s chairshot and calmly kneels down, rips the cross necklace off of Hogan, and then drops it on his chest.

The British Bulldog (34-2-2) pins Mike Samples after the running powerslam at 1:07:

The commentators spend the match discussing the previous segment. The Bulldog notches another win, continuing his workhorse ways in 1991.

Big Bully Busick and Harvey Wippleman talk about wanting to hurt Intercontinental Champion Bret Hart and take his title. Bret fires back that Busick better come at him hard and fast because that is how he likes it.

Tune in next week to see Intercontinental Champion Bret Hart defend his title against Big Bully Busick! Also, the Texas Tornado and Jake Roberts will be in action! And there will be a conversation with Elizabeth and an update on Hulk Hogan’s opinion!

The Last Word: There were a lot of major developments packed into this show. The Funeral Parlor segment was great, weaving both of Hulk Hogan’s programs together and putting over the Undertaker like a badass. It was little wonder why fans were starting to cheer the Undertaker on house shows. WWF President Jack Tunney finally addressed Randy Savage’s reinstatement, implying that he was about to change course. And Sergeant Slaughter will be returning to in-ring action now that his vignettes are over, with a program against Colonel Mustafa waiting on his arrival. With Jim Neidhart out of Survivor Series, he looks like a likely replacement for that match.
