What the World Was Watching: WWF Wrestling Challenge – September 8, 1991

16th December 2022 by LScisco
Rants

Like Superstars, there is an updated video montage that features more of Sid Justice and eliminates the Ultimate Warrior.

Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan are doing commentary, taped from Eric, Pennsylvania. According to the historyofwwe.com, the taping took place on August 20.

Opening Contest: The Big Bossman (29-0-1) beats Scott Colantonio with the Bossman Slam at 2:29:

Colantonio had been working as a WWF enhancement talent since 1988. Sometimes he worked under the name Scott Colton.

Heenan claims to be investigating the Big Bossman and Irwin R. Schyster’s allegations that the Bossman was on the take in Cobb County. The Bossman plays a lot to the crowd between moves, vanquishing Colantonio with the Bossman Slam.

A replay of the Randy Savage-Elizabeth wedding reception footage from Superstars is shown.

Greg Valentine (16-6-1) defeats Bob Bradley via submission to the figure-four leglock at 2:32:

Bradley has adopted a more strait-laced look, abandoning his wild brown hair and weird facial expressions for the camera. He stills works in his slow backspring elbow in the corner, though. A blind charge causes Bradley to go knee-first into the corner and Valentine pounces, working the injured limb over to set up the figure-four.

Colonel Mustafa (12-0) beats Bill Pierce via submission to the Camel Clutch at 2:16:

Monsoon notes that Sergeant Slaughter has gone into seclusion after SummerSlam. In the split screen, Mustafa and General Adnan say that it is time for Slaughter to retire. Mustafa plants Pierce with a backdrop suplex and locks in the Camel Clutch right after to win.

Lord Alfred Hayes’ Special Report segment replays the Roddy Piper-Heenan interaction on the Superstars Funeral Parlor segment a week ago.

The Natural Disasters (w/Jimmy Hart) (9-0) defeat Paul Perez & Phil Apollo when Earthquake pins Apollo after the Earthquake Splash at 3:23:

In the split screen, the Nasty Boys, Disasters, and Jimmy Hart tell the Legion of Doom that their time as tag team champions will be cut short. That allows Monsoon to tell fans that the Legion will be on tomorrow night’s Prime Time Wrestling. Perez gets squashed several times against the buckles by the Disasters and, to make matters worse for him, he takes both of their finishers at the end.

The Dragon (17-0) pins Brian Donahue after the flying body press at 2:20:

Skinner does an insert promo about how he is not scared of the Dragon because he strikes him as a lizard that should be eaten alive. As a former NWA World Champion Steamboat had to be thrilled to be in this feud. His body language communicates that he is losing interest in the company, showing little energy as he goes through the motions in this squash.

Ted DiBiase and Sensational Sherri are guests on the Barber Shop. DiBiase promises that Virgil’s reign as Million Dollar Champion will be a short one.

Irwin R. Schyster (13-0-2) pins Ross Greenberg after the Write Off at 2:45:

Before the match, IRS tells people that the economy is in bad shape because they are not paying their taxes. In the split screen, the Big Bossman says that no one should question his integrity, so he is coming after IRS. Heenan has a funny rebuttal that the Bossman has a big head because he sent the Mountie to jail so he thinks he can do that to anyone. After some basic strikes, IRS pins Greenberg with the Write Off.

Tune in next week to see the British Bulldog, Skinner, and the Beverly Brothers in action!

The Last Word: Nothing came out of this show except more clues that Sergeant Slaughter would be turning babyface in the coming weeks, telegraphed by Colonel Mustafa and General Adnan’s promo about how it was time for him to retire.

The most noteworthy event on the house show circuit was the WWF hosting its annual King of the Ring tournament in Providence, Rhode Island as part of a matinee show on September 7. Here are the results of that card, as well as others, during early September, with results coming courtesy of thehistoryofwwe.com:

White Plains, New York – Westchester County Civic Center – September 6, 1991 (3,400): Tito Santana pinned Bob Bradley…Typhoon beat Greg Valentine…Marty Jannetty & Jim Powers (substituting for Shawn Michaels) beat Pat Tanaka & Colonel Mustafa (substituting for Kato) when Jannetty pinned Tanaka…Jimmy Snuka beat the Barbarian (substituting for the Warlord)…Irwin R. Schyster beat Jim Neidhart…The Big Bossman defeated the Mountie in a steel cage match.

Providence, Rhode Island – Providence Civic Center – September 7, 1991 (2,400 – matinee): Opening Round matches: Jerry Sags beat Hawk via disqualification when Hawk hit Sags with Jimmy Hart’s megaphone at 3:02…The Dragon wrestled Ted DiBiase to a 15-minute time-limit draw…Hacksaw Jim Duggan beat Brian Knobbs at 5:04…Irwin R. After the match, Jake Roberts interfered and helped the Undertaker double-team Justice…Semi-Finals: Irwin R. Schyster pinned Jerry Sags with a roll up at 1:22…Finals: Bret Hart pinned Irwin R. Schyster with a roll up in ten minutes.

Springfield, Massachusetts – Springfield Civic Center – September 7, 1991 (2,200): The Dragon beat Irwin R. Schyster…Hacksaw Jim Duggan wrestled the Berzerker to a double count out…The Warlord pinned Virgil after Ted DiBiase interfered…The Beverly Brothers beat the Bushwhackers…Skinner defeated Mario Mancini (substituting for the Texas Tornado)…Intercontinental Champion Bret Hart pinned Ted DiBiase after Virgil interfered…Sid Justice (substituting for the Ultimate Warrior) & the Legion of Doom beat the Undertaker & the Nasty Boys when Sid pinned Knobbs after a powerbomb.

Backstage News*: The WWF is worried about what matchups will draw on B-level house shows without the Ultimate Warrior. Sid’s matches against the Undertaker have not drawn what the company was expecting and there are fears that his program with Jake Roberts will not draw a lot either.

*The King of the Ring Tournament in Providence, Rhode Island was a DUD in terms of drawing power as well.

*Florida is considering greater regulations on professional wrestling and mandatory steroid testing. The WWF has signaled that if Florida goes through with it, that they will not run shows in the state.

*In talent relations news, Ric Flair has officially signed with the WWF. The contract provides little besides the WWF’s usual guarantee of television appearance minimums. WCW did make one last effort to sign Flair, but he was not biting. Flair is scheduled to work his first match against Hulk Hogan in Oakland California on October 25 and will wrestle Roddy Piper in Madison Square Garden on October 28.
