Let’s rebook Starrcade 87!
By Scott Keith on 30th November 2022
Since the repost of Starrcade 87 is coming up right away and this has been ratting around in my Tylenol-addled brain for a few days now, let’s try to rebook one of the less-rebooked Starrcades and see if we can fix it, because I’ve always been massively disappointed in how the debut PPV for Crockett turned out.
First up, there’s three major things hanging over the show that always needed fixing and pretty much doomed it from the start:
- Ric Flair wanting to regain the World title at Starrcade and needing lame duck Ron Garvin to do so.
- Dusty booking the Road Warriors to lose a tag team title match in Chicago
- The UWF merger dragging the promotion down with needless titles and roster bloat (GEE WHERE HAVE WE HEARD THAT ONE BEFORE LOL)
Common feeling at the time was that they would unify the UWF and NWA World titles here or soon after, but it never happened. So let’s do that. Instead of Ron Garvin winning the belt from Flair to set this up, how about Barry Windham wins the UWF title from Steve Williams instead in September, setting up Flair v. Windham as our main event to unify the belts? Then Flair can win them both, Barry is happy to job, we get a ***** main event probably, UWF is killed off in a blaze of glory.
Then with Ron Garvin free, instead of Road Warriors challenging Tully & Arn, we get the Garvin Brothers challenging Tully and Arn, which continues the Jimmy Garvin feud with the Horsemen nicely. Doesn’t matter who wins really.
I hate scaffold matches and we need something for the Warriors to do in Chicago, so let’s scrap the Midnights/RNR match and replace it with Road Warriors & Dr. Death v. Midnight Express & Big Bubba Rogers in a Chicago Street Fight! Rock N Roll Express were on the way out anyway. Plus it’s a six-man so the MX doesn’t have to lose the US tag team titles.
Nikita Koloff was always such a weird fit as TV champion but I don’t have a better alternative so we’ll keep the TV title unification match with Terry Taylor.
The Dusty-Luger program was actually leading somewhere so we’ll keep that as it is.
So there we go, that gives us:
NWA-UWF World title unification: Ric Flair v. Barry Windham (this presumably goes a full 60 minutes with Flair pulling it out at 59:40 or whatever)
NWA World tag team titles: Tully & Arn v. Jimmy & Ron Garvin (maybe with a wacky stip?)
US title: Lex Luger v. Dusty Rhodes
NWA-UWF TV title unification: Nikita Koloff v. Terry Taylor
Chicago Street Fight: The Road Warriors & Dr. Death v. The Midnight Express & Big Bubba
The Rock N Roll Express v. Eddie Gilbert & Rick Steiner
Honestly the only thing I don’t know how to fix is the TV title match because we’d need to either replace Taylor or Koloff and it’s way too early to put someone like Sting into that mix. I’m open to ideas.
