OKAY TWITTER. Calm down. Let’s talk Cobra Kai, although I’ve only had a chance to watch the first two episodes so far. Of course, spoilers are ahead for those episodes.
The Mexico plot didn’t do much for me, with story beats that we could see coming a mile away, although in all cases it was so obvious and dumb that it swung all the way around again to being awesome. The payoff for the Australian surfer scam, for instance. Also Miguel getting off a bus in Mexico for the first time and JUST HAPPENING to find the one guy in the entire country named “Hector Salazar” who is totally his real dad. And of course turns out to be a drug dealer who runs an underground MMA fighting club. Where of course Johnny gets into a karate fight while the announcer excitedly declares IT’S KARATE VS MMA! But hey, that’s part of the charm.
My heart was melted by Johnny finally giving Miguel his father figure approval and hopefully all three of them can co-exist as a family of sorts now, but I’m not holding out hope.
Meanwhile Terry Silver is just all the way into Lex Luther supervillain territory now, expanding the Cobra Kai empire and apparently now revealed to be a student of deadly Korean martial arts on top of it? Man’s got layers.
Line of either episode goes to Amanda, as she marvels that Kreese is in jail and all the beefs are resolved, which is “a karate miracle”, once again speaking as the baffled outsider watching all this insanity unfold around her. But of course, Daniel-san declares that this means it’s even more important than ever to do more karate and stop Cobra Kai!
Also Sam is the worst and I feel like it’s her turn to go heel later in the season and switch places with Tory, who apparently draws the line at having Silver bribe the ref for her victory.
Anyway I love this stupid, stupid show and I will continue to post reviews, probably 2 eps at a time, as I work through another wacky season over the next week.
