Was he always meant to stick around for a short time to do the Sting feud or were there other plans?
He was originally offered a long-term big money deal by Jim Herd after he left the WWF, but Bill Watts came into power before he had a chance to sign the deal and immediately tore it up and low balled him with a much smaller deal. Jake had pretty much burned his bridges with Vince at that point, so he took the Watts deal. And then he actually drew with Sting pretty well, but Watts just couldn't deal with his shit and got rid of him as soon as he could.
