Catering to the diehards works?

For years, we've been told a wrestling product that caters to diehard wrestling fans won't make it in the mainstream. Is AEW on the verge of disproving that theory?
I think WWE caters just as much to “diehard” fans, but they’re both catering to a specific segment of them.
