–Tony Schiavone and Bobby Heenan are tasked with commentary and they are taped from Orlando, Florida. They recap the events surrounding Hulk Hogan and the Giant at Fall Brawl.
–Opening Contest: Johnny B. Badd (36-5-2) pins Otis Apollo after the Tutti Frutti at 1:36:
Badd defeated Apollo on the September 2 edition of WCW Pro and Apollo loses again today, with Apollo unable to match Badd’s quickness. Schiavone says that Badd’s United States title shot will take place soon on WCW Saturday Night.
–The Diamond Doll tells Chris Cruise that Television Champion Diamond Dallas Page does not want him to start an interview without him. With Page not there, Cruise interviews the Doll, who says she is flattered by fan mail and spends a great deal of time cleaning for Page. Page and Maxx Muscle interrupt, with Page incensed that the Doll is talking without him around.
–Road Warrior Hawk (3-0-1) pins Terry Richards after a flying clothesline in 55 seconds:
This is Hawk’s return from an injury suffered at the hands of Kurasawa at The Clash of the Champions on August 6. Despite having his right bicep taped up, Hawk sells very little of it since he uses his right arm to slam Richards and do the flying clothesline.
–Kevin Sullivan (w/Meng) (16-5) beats Todd Wilder after a double stomp at 1:18:
The crowd showers Sullivan with “Hogan” chants as he beats up Wilder, does a Tree of Woe attack, and finishes with the double stomp. Sullivan has now won six matches in a row, with this squash building him up for a match with Randy Savage on Monday Nitro. After the match, Meng is shown at ringside with the golden spike, an object so lethal the Dungeon of Doom did not bother to bring it to Fall Brawl.
–The Blue Bloods (23-4-2) defeats Barry Houston & Julio Sanchez when Lord Steven Regal makes Sanchez submit to the Regal Stretch at 2:37:
Heenan makes a half-hearted attempt to put over the tag team division, saying the current setup is the best that he has ever seen and recapping the teams he managed in the past. Houston gets some shine against Earl Robert Eaton until running into a knee lift. Sanchez does not fare nearly as well and is destroyed by the Bloods, who desperately need to find something to do.
–United States Champion Sting tells Cruise that Ric Flair betrayed him in the past so that means he will not help him in this war against Arn Anderson and Brian Pillman. In terms of Lex Luger, Sting says he is not sure what Luger’s intentions are, but he is going to find out.
–Paul Orndorff (14-7) beats Terry Morgan after a piledriver at 2:05:
During ring entrances, Orndorff is no longer billed by his name but simply as “Mr. Wonderful.” Heenan loves Orndorff’s new theme song, trying to hit the high notes and causing Schiavone to lose it. Orndorff refuses to pin Morgan after suplexing him against the turnbuckles, opting to use the piledriver.
–Arn Anderson & Brian Pillman defeat Steve & Scott Armstrong (0-4) when Anderson pins Steve after a DDT at 9:28:
Pillman is still wrestling in bright tights that are better suited for a babyface because of how early Worldwide was taped relative to other WCW programming. He does a funny spot where he leapfrogs Scott and then does another from the reverse position but ends up falling on Scott’s knee instead. The match would have more drama if the Armstrongs had an ounce of credibility, but they do not and the match drags when Anderson and Pillman slowly work over Scott. Steve gets a near-fall from a flying clothesline but a Pillman kick to the back of the head when he runs the ropes and an Anderson DDT give the Armstrongs their third loss in three shows this week. Despite Anderson getting the fall, Pillman’s “Blondes Are More Fun” theme plays for the crowd. Rating: *½
–Tune in next week to see Sting face Arn Anderson! Also, the Disco Inferno, Kurasawa, and Alex Wright are in action!
The Last Word: The lag in taping Worldwide episodes relative to Monday Nitro and WCW Saturday Night is becoming an issue since Worldwide just feels incredibly stale compared to those other broadcasts. Tony Schiavone and Bobby Heenan have to go to great lengths to justify why some things are out of place, like Brian Pillman wearing his old tights; ignore others like Meng sporting a dragon head that he abandoned weeks ago before Fall Brawl; or are just plain wrong in their evaluation of angles as they argued the Disco Inferno was debuting next week despite Disco wrestling several matches on WCW programming already. This episode was just a waste of time, but it does seem like WCW is going to be running the Sting/Ric Flair-Arn Anderson/Brian Pillman angles on WCW Pro and Worldwide based on next week’s bookings.
Up Next: WCW Saturday Night for September 23!
